Do you think you should stop baby sign once they start talking or continue untill there fluent and then just keep using it? If the parents arent fluent themself, maybe learn it as a family together?
@gigi1bokus I would encourage everyone to keep learning! It's a great second language to learn. It really helped my daughter learn to read (when we taught her the ASL alphabet)
Can i ask, do you teach her asl or see? And what are you thoughts on wich you should teach your baby for baby sign language? ( I dont have one i am just wondering theoretically). Also with your own daughter do you start to notice if you are teaching her too many words if she starts to forget old ones, because i find it fascinating that babies not only learn the sign but retain that knowledge (like a little mini photographic memory).
@gigi1bokus when parents teach babies they tend to use the SEE structure simply because they are putting one sign to one English word. I do encourage parents to use ASL signs vs SEE signs if they are different. Then when children become older you can being to introduce ASL sentence structure.
@SmartHandsCA Ah, right :-) I was just wondering, because I only learned the word for avocado when I was like ehhh.. 16 (now 22) ;-) Your daughter seems like a very smart little girl, I love the way you interact with your kids! Such an inspiration.
@Tesseliene thanks :) That's nice of you to say! i am with you, I didn't know what an avocado was until I was in my 20s LOL. Now they say it's good to give to babies because of the good fats in it :)
wow she is super cute. I am a nanny of twin boys who are 5 months old and I have really been working with them on signing. niether of them have started signing yet but hopefully they will soon.
Such a gorgeous intelligent little girl!!!! She knew so many signs as well as being able to say the words. Being a good parents is about patience and knowing the importance of education. I'm impressed!
Sign language happens to be enormously helpful in the development and growth among youngsters. Studies proved kids, regardless of whether or not deaf, tend to display more effective language and growth capabilities when they comprehend American Sign Language. As a result, a myriad of fathers and mothers happen to be supporting their kids to take a sign language lesson via hiring private tutors or by forming communities to be able to teach their kids.
I am not a mom yet, but plan to be in the next few years and have really been thinking about baby sign language. Thank you so much for posting these videos! It seems to me that there are so many practical reasons to do this. Beyond that, though, it is such a great way to interact more deeply with your child-your daughter is so engaged and you can just tell her brain is charged. Very cool, thank you again!
@grandsjoem She just turned 5 and she still signs. She now has a little brother and she loves teaching him. She still likes to learn new signs and is now putting sentences together in sign language
You are a great teacher, i'm Hispanic and my baby is learning spanish as her first lenguage and some sign words... I just got your iphone app and it is better than all the otherones, love it.
That is truly amazing! I was born deaf back in the 1960's and back then, educators did not want the deaf to sign, but they wanted the deaf to talk. When I attended the school for the deaf, I was not allowed to sign. After my most of my hearing was recovered, the deaf fought for the right to sign. I later learned signing by taking courses. Now there is a threat of the right to sign being taken away from the deaf again.
so adorable. inoccent question, why do u know sign languge.she seems to hear fine.and ur a sign languge teacher? that so awesome.but i was just wondering.=)
@musicismysoul24 Babies learn an amazing amount of language and much earlier communication when they are exposed regularly to sign language. Hearing babies and Deaf babies alike. It's fun, fascinating, and just an utter DELIGHT when your little one signs back!
@paking03 Thanks :-) It's like teaching a baby how to wave bye-bye. Be consistent and keep it up. There is a link to an article I wrote about how to sign with your baby in my channel if you want to read more!
Aww she's so cute! I've been signing with my son, who just turned 12months, since he was 6 months, and I know he recognizes the signs, but he doesn't sign back yet. :( Anything I can do to boost his signing or do I just wait until he's ready?
@AdMeliora1 Thanks :-) I had a boy in my class who didn't sign back until he was almost 15 months and then his signs exploded! He didn't have any and then the next day he had 30, it was amazing. Make sure to do the sign every time you say the word. Also, find things he is interested in and show him the sign for those things. It will come very soon!!
it`s cool 4 kids when they dont know how to speak, you can tell what do they want but its probably hard to memorise all the signs every day. the child can make a sign and you eventually dont know what does it want.
she is so cuteee!! my son started to use sign language when he was four months old & the reason why i want to teach him is to communicate with me when he grows up. yes, i am hard of hearing & proud of his mommy (: lovingg it!
She is so precious...and so smart! I love her name, her cute little laugh and smile. You I can tell are a wonderful mom. I'm sure she will only learn more through you. I really enjoyed your videos. Thank you for posting!
gorgeous video. is this a part of real sign language or is it just for babies? does it fade away when language comes into play? It shows the level of intelligence is huge from very early on and such a shame to let children just cry. bless her :D
she is soo cute !! she is learning quickly.. does she understand whats she signing? like if she wanted a strawberry..would she do the sign for strawberrY?
I think that this is amazing and I will certainly be using this with my niece when she is born. Its amazing how they can pick things up so fast ad remember it! Thank you!
I just started teaching her in the same way you would teach a baby to wave bye-bye. I always talked about it being a sign when we made signs. I would say show me the sign vs what's the word. She is now 4 and still loves signing!
i will like to let me know how often , and how long should i teach my 11 months , i do have patient to teach her is just need some advice please thanks...
angie2009.... just teach her with activities as a routine. YES you need lots of patience, but it's VERY worth it. And you can teach them forever as long as you/Baby/Toddler wants to. :-) Hope this helps.
My baby is now 9 months old and is just now saying ma ma ba ba and is not saying many double consanants I am very interested in signing and just wonder if this would help her with her language skill also can she learn any of these at 9 months? she is quick and even a little fast on her gross and even fine motor skills but a little slower on the language can this help?
I love this concept! I'm a young nanny and am seeing kids who are taught to sign more and more. It is incredibly helpful in communication, especially with those who might not be familiar with a child's particular speech patterns. I will definitely be teaching my own children to sign when I have them.
ohhhh wow so very amazing myself is profoundly deaf can teaching the sign language no plms if anyone do same teach baby to know how sign to need to talk and what want... that so cool the video
ohhhh wow so very amazing myself is profoundly deaf can teaching the sign language no plms if anyone do same teach baby to know how sign to need to talk and what want... that so cool the video
WOW! Your daughter is a genius!!!!!!!!!! I have a 4 month old daughter and sooo excited about baby signing!!!! You are SUCH an encouragement!!! GREAT job, keep it up! :)
Signing is great for babies, when they can't communicate to tell you what they want they get very frustrated, babies can learn to sign before they speak, saves on alot of frustration for both parents and babies. I don't have children but a family member taught sign to her daughter and her first sign was "more cookie" so cute!
It does take some patience but after i started learning my wee girl at 9 month all other signs she picked up very quickly she actually started making up her on signs about 15 months old. My health visitor was a bit wary of it saying it would stop lauren from talking but she was talking earlier than most child and could certainly make sentence well before she should have . Lauren is 7 year old and her memory is fantastic and she is top of her class for English
This video is an amazing example of how at this age babies' brains are absolute sponges. The fact that she imitates you so readily is terrific. How often do you have to repeat a sign before it actually becomes a part of her vocabulary? (Not counting the continual practice after it's already been established as a word she knows.)
Thank you. Once she realized that each word had a sign it was really easy for her to pick up the signs. I would only have to show her once or twice. When she first was learning it took a little longer. It's like teaching a baby how to wave bye-bye. It's the same concept.
She's a genius! Wonderful job at teaching her! Besides the fact that she's an amazing signer, she is just so precious! I keep rewinding back to the part where she signs and says "BABY!"
that is awesome... we are teaching our 2.5 year old sign language because she has CP, She has over twice as many words with sign language than spoken language
iim majoring in special education and getting my sign language ceritficate and teaching my 1year old little sister this is amazing and so cute! shes smart and as a mother ii think that is so perfect and great of you to take time to teach her! i am amazed :)
Amazing! I have been taking sign language classes for 2 years and I forget signs a lot and I find it incredible that this baby does a way better job than I do :] god bless her and she's very lucky to have a mother like that :]]]]
Well I DO find it amazing. Because the younger the child is, the less patience and attention span they have. Not to mention the smaller their learning capacity is. I would say Fireese has HUGE head start!
I don't find it THAT amazing. Not only are babies clever because of their insatiable thirst for learning, but as kids we pick up on movements and associate them with sounds all the time. We also mime things constantly. It's more the mother's patience which I applaud here, plus the baby's incredible cuteness :p
My daughter was a later talker -- nothing much before 18mo. We did baby sign very early on, but she didn't even start signing until about 13mo. By 15mo, she had over 50 signs. Her first sign was "help!" It was so great when she was still pre-verbal and only barely-verbal.
She's now 2.5 and talks in whole stories heh... but she still loves her signing videos, showing off her signs, and watching these videos on youtube. :)
god bless their souls. the mom for taking time off and taking care of her child and being patient/ and the child for being cute and not one of those crazy brats thats spoil (yes my spelling sticks but still god bless this 2)
Well I have a three yer old little girl and she can already talk but I'm planning on having another baby soon and I would love to teach him/her signs. I think it's soo awesome =)
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO SOOO cute!!! Wats her name?!?!?! And is your husbands name Moe? Cause its funny..... Daddyyyyyy!!! OMG so cute!1
at what age did you start teaching her.... and what age did she start picking up on it? Are you a stay at home Mom? I certainly will be teaching my children signing when i have some!
I started when she was 4 months and she started signing back at just over 9 months. I quit my job to stay at home with her and ended up starting my own company to allow me to stay at home :-)
I'm sure it will help her academic life. She started reading at the age of two and a half. I am not worried about her being too advanced or bored in school because there will be other things she may not be as strong in that will keep her busy :-)
i think this is so great that she knows how to sign i would like to teach my 6month old how to sign. when did u start with your daugther and whats the best way to start.
she is talking at 13 months so well! my nephew is almost 4 and he still can't talk that great due to his father talking baby talk. The way you talk to your daughter not using baby talk is very good!
It is very nice to see there is still some people who works with their kids in this busy world. Maybe it would be more smart kids if their parents would have more time and patience for them.
Amazing. The only thing I wonder though, do you teach her when is the time to talk, and when is the time to sign? For example, does she try to sign with other kids, assuming that the other kids know the signs aswell?
She always would try to talk over signing because we always would say the word while making the sign. She only used signs with other kids if she was 'teaching' them :-)
It was never a problem and was also very useful when she started talking and we couldn't understand what she was saying, we would ask her for the sign and it made life so much easier for all of us!
She is some smart. I am surprised with her vocabulary at that age.. you can understand a lot of her talking! I guess that helps when you talk to her a lot... I bet signing helped in that area because you talked more! Great parenting
I was interested because I study how babys pic up a language in my "Language Acquisition" Corse at university and it's wonderful to see how this works so easily and she really seems to enjoy it.
I had learned the alphabet once, but since I don't use it, I forgot most of it.
Watching F's formative years, the development of her communication skills & your close relationship as you share in the joy of teaching and learning has been fascinating. She has excelled in all of her skills - a result of ASL or the use of her interest & joy in language & not "forced" learning times? A fantastic teacher in your recognition of & taking advantage of this. How fun watching her immense pleasure at the refrigerator as she learned to master the spelling/reading of words-thank you!
Do you think you should stop baby sign once they start talking or continue untill there fluent and then just keep using it? If the parents arent fluent themself, maybe learn it as a family together?

"Not to mention the smaller their learning capacity is."
That's actually not true. They can learn more easily in the first 5 years.

wow omg thats incredible

at what age did you start teaching her.... and what age did she start picking up on it? Are you a stay at home Mom? I certainly will be teaching my children signing when i have some!
iiibrittney 2 years ago
I started when she was 4 months and she started signing back at just over 9 months. I quit my job to stay at home with her and ended up starting my own company to allow me to stay at home :-)

i can only begin to wonder how this will effect her academic life...i mean, she will be so advanced. are you teaching her to read as well?
deionc 2 years ago
I'm sure it will help her academic life. She started reading at the age of two and a half. I am not worried about her being too advanced or bored in school because there will be other things she may not be as strong in that will keep her busy :-)
SmartHandsCA 2 years ago
She is a genius. I think there r some good Pre schools in U.S. U should put her in there. Good for her future
RippinHeadsII7 2 years ago
I love her name.. you pronounce it like Freeze? Is it a family name? Fireese is so smart and so so cute!
boo8ball 2 years ago 2
Thank you! You pronounce it Fir (like fur) and eese (like Reese). We made it up, it is a mix of fire and ice, a balance of two things.

i think this is so great that she knows how to sign i would like to teach my 6month old how to sign. when did u start with your daugther and whats the best way to start.
miney26 2 years ago
she is talking at 13 months so well! my nephew is almost 4 and he still can't talk that great due to his father talking baby talk. The way you talk to your daughter not using baby talk is very good!
eyesofnova 2 years ago 6
It is very nice to see there is still some people who works with their kids in this busy world. Maybe it would be more smart kids if their parents would have more time and patience for them.
Lela021 2 years ago 5
Amazing. The only thing I wonder though, do you teach her when is the time to talk, and when is the time to sign? For example, does she try to sign with other kids, assuming that the other kids know the signs aswell?
Maryammmm 2 years ago
She always would try to talk over signing because we always would say the word while making the sign. She only used signs with other kids if she was 'teaching' them :-)
It was never a problem and was also very useful when she started talking and we couldn't understand what she was saying, we would ask her for the sign and it made life so much easier for all of us!

She is some smart. I am surprised with her vocabulary at that age.. you can understand a lot of her talking! I guess that helps when you talk to her a lot... I bet signing helped in that area because you talked more! Great parenting

Thank you :-)
If you click on my user name it will take you to my page and there you will find a link to an article I wrote on how to sign with your baby.

this is so great!
