  • my favorite part is at 1:24 when the elderly man who looks like walking is a great effort even chooses the stairs. i love it

  • Genial.

  • BledZeppeling... You're fucking right

  • Great experiment! We need more of this creative thinking.

  • Gostei =P

  • Social Design!

  • very coooooooooooooooooool XD

  • isso só acontece no rio grande do sul!!!

dessa vez vocês se superaram né adrian!!!

  • @ElvisElvito 'e, l'a mesmo hehehehe

  • isso só acontece no rio grande do sul!

  • Wasn´t it easier to turn the escalator off?

  • @calesou _ a very green solution but I still like the music.

  • I want to put church bells on my girlfriends titties and a clarinet in her hoo-hah and see how much stupid noise we can make. Giggedty giggedty goo

  • There's really just one troll on this video as far as I can see who is taking their opinions a little too far. I think it's an interesting concept, in all honesty. It's amazing how a little offered fun can alter a human being's approach and behavior.

  • They seriously need to put some of these in Vegas! I personally am not a fan of stairs, and I'm a skinny little girl! I think it's mostly because that since the stairs are so boring, people can only think about how bad their day is, or how much energy that have to use to get up 12 or so steps. Yes, stairs can be very boring!

BUT with these stairs, it can actually make airport trips that much less stressful. You can have those few moments of fun!!!:) I like this idea!

  • Yeah, this works great until all the daily commuters have walked the stairs before and are bored with it. They'll go back to the escalator and scowl as all the newcomers and still-impressed kids make noise on the stairs that exacerbates their Monday morning headache. LOL

  • It would be interesting to know if this changed people's beahviour over a longer period of time. How much of it's effectiveness was the novelty. It is a lovely idea and ti's great to see so many people clearly enjoying themselves.

  • very cool! great theory. :)

  • This is music and good for everyone, can relieve your headache and stress too, kids too would enjoy.... cheaper than building an escalator. Also the power consumption of an escalator is ten times more as it has to run a motor and carry many overweight people. Plus the exercise would help our UNUSED leg muscles ;-)

  • Those complaining about this must be fun to hang out with... Bet they can find something negativ to say about a baby laughing.

  • ohh ! it's like a piano !!! :D

  • i can't believe all the negative comments on this video. the idea was to get people to do something that is better for their bodies--using stairs for exercise instead of the escalator for convenience. don't overthink it.

  • To those who oppose... "get a grip and enjoy life for a change". This is fun... a mix of social experiment, play, shared creativity, surprise, and just plain silly. I remember critics who sat in the audience when I played on stage... I always wondered why they were critics. Then I got to know the negative less playful people of the world. If you don't like it, then take the elevator.

  • Guess who will be sued when a troubled cardiac patient who should have used the escalator, but instead drops dead using the stairway because he thought it would be fun???

Probably no sue job in Europe or China, but surely in the USA!!!....

  • This is just too cool! I want one in my house!!

  • very funny

  • Imagine the noise? How about imagining all those people fat in 10 years and sucking the life out of public healthcare! Get over it and get moving!

  • This is a great way to get people to burn a few more calories! Also, I can see this as a fun way of brightening my spirits. Cute! Thanks, @anca4vlad, for sharing... :D

  • Well, aren't you a downer.

  • Brilliant, brilliant and... brilliant! Another great example of gamification!

  • I loved this until I saw it was sponsored by a car company! Still, great idea!

    Fun is fun!

  • where's the douche tryin to play chopsticks? lmao

  • @westeightyone So sorry for taking so long to read my inbox. To reply: I don't even remember what I said, lol. Whatever it was, I'm sure I wrote it in a goodnatured way, because this was a very feel-good vid (just watched it again). Unless you said something evil about the vid. Or maybe you read something I replied to someone ELSE saying something evil about the vid. I hate people who see the negative in something so obviously positive.

  • @MsDenouement

sorry about not getting back to you for a couple of days. A comment from someone who finds fault with your comment doesn't have to be 'evil' . You ' hate' people who don't share your simplistic views ? Wow. I'm positive that that's pretty negative on your part. There ARE negative aspects to the musical staircase that you obviously haven't taken into consideration.

  • @westeightyone Oh no, not a problem at all. A couple days is nothing, no worries. We're not going to agree on this, and that's ok. :)

  • Exercising a Mind Shift - Making Stair Climbing Fun... just imagine what can be mindshifted about money, wealth, and happiness in a FUN environment. My life has totalled changed since I started LoveYourMillionaireMind com as a website and yours can too! Have fun with this video, but open your own mind to positive change! and although not all stairs have tunes you can hear, you can always sign to yourself as you move forward in life!

  • This is great!

  • I'd like to see this on the London underground, hard job to cheer anyone up there though. :) You just need a few friends to play a tune. Love the idea.

  • This is so awesome! actually kinda brought a tear to my eye about how cool n happy this is

  • This is kinda a "WELL DUH" moment. You turned the stairs interactive.

  • yeah! this is so cool. Thanks for creating and posting.

  • I like the grandpa at 1:22 and the grandma at 1:25 :).

  • Well I doubt the piano sounded quite like it did at the end of the video, it probably sounded noisy as hell

  • supper cool!

  • I think this is great and it just goes to show, if you make exercise more enjoyable then more people would participate without thinking too much about it. It's all those little bits that add up that count.

  • ppl are too easily led

  • ...so...34% of the people were deaf..and looked at all the weirdo's hopping around on the stairs like they were crazy hahahah

  • its not the fun theory its the 'music' theory.

  • My mum always told me not to play on the stairs.

What next? Aerobics on airport runways to make waiting for a 'plane more fun?

    or...

    Topless female bus drivers?

I want to be paid in green jelly. Do you think the boss would listen....?

The problem with the modern world is that everyone thinks the world revolves around themselves, and that we all should have fun all the time. Maybe if we weren't all wage slaves and glued to technology/gimmicks we'd remember how to have fun.

  • @BledZeppelin 1st suggestion: Well, for one thing aerobics isn't THAT fun, & sweating sucks before being crammed into a plane with 200 others. Also, I think it's dangerous to wait for a plane on the runway instead of the TERMINAL. lol!

2nd: You can hardly say men, women, and children bouncing up & down musical stairs=topless female bus drivers. Let's show some perspective here.

3rd: You really think it would be fun to be paid in jelly?

I think your idea of fun runs counter to everyone else's!

  • @MsDenouement

    1. You wouldn't have to do aerobics on the runway if you didn't want to. You would have to take the stairs or the escalator to get to your destination. You wouldn't have the choice to avoid the noise of people walking, running, jumping on the staircase.

2.Men, women and children bouncing on musical stairs doesn't = topless bus drivers. What about those who would enjoy the sight of topless bus drivers ? Should they get their way because your group gets your way with the stairs ?

  • Hi,@westeightyone Well, that's one way of looking at it. We can agree to disagree, but then I do agree to some extent. I would love to see topless women bus drivers. Anyway. I see this piano stairs thing as a cool experiment. We don't need to take ourselves so seriously ALL the time.

  • @lionlovebig

    How long would this 'cool experiment' last ? A day ? A week ? A month ?

    Who's paying for it ? The taxpayers or a company ( volkswagen ?) ?

Who's liable if something happens on those stairways? The taxpayers or a company ?

Is there an alternative way of travelling up and down in that station for those who don't want to take those musical stairs ? The escalator beside the musical stairs only travel upwards. If you hated the sound you'd have to endure it when you walked down.

  • @MsDenouement

it's incredibly presumptuous of you to suggest that you speak for 'everyone else'.

    You don't.

  • @BledZeppelin Holy shit, when I started reading I thought you were just some no-fun-allowed kind of asshole, but as I read the whole comment, I realized you couldn't be any more right.

It's sad, but what you said is true.

  • @BledZeppelin I gave you thumbs up just because of your name

  • @BledZeppelin

"My mum always told me not to play on the stairs." wtf?

  • @afgrrr My - means something that belongs or relates to 'me, Mother - a female parent, Always - adverb meaning permanent, long-lasting or regular/regularly, Told - a more informal version of 'instructed': a verbal conveyance, Me - my self, Not - a negating word, To - a word often placed before verbs, Play - to engage in physical fun, On - preposition indicating that an object is above another, The - definite article Stairs - series of short planks, for increase/decrease altitude OK?
  • This video put a big smile on my face.

    It made me happy C:

  • They remind me of a dog chasing a stick - easily amused

  • I love that i would walk on those stairs all day

  • Psychology works!

  • I want to roll myself down the stairs that make piano sounds ;w; ....

  • Das awesome.

  • human beings are really simple creatures

  • i would ssoooooooooo go on these :)

  • Well, looks nice from the very beginning. However I absolutely agree with the comments about noise, especially when it is crowded. From the environmental/ energy saving point of view this is just a disaster - the escalator is still moving even without people on it. And the sound system needs power for operation + sensor on each step + camera + energy and materials spent for its production (must be a big one)... Fun. nothing else

  • @burundustra

Thank you for talking sense, as wasted as that may be on the dopes who don't consider the big picture.

  • @burundustra they should put a sensor on the escalator, when someone steps on it, thats when it would move.

  • @burundustra I bet you're fun at parties....

  • @burundustra Well you're just a ray of fucking sunshine, aren't you?

  • @burundustra sheesh. What a party pooper

    :P

  • @8182570, ElliotJobby and other nice people saying bad things about me... Why not to be positive not only about new creations but also about people... I'm not a party pooper, I'm a person with 3 degrees in environmental sciences :-P The idea is nice and creative, no doubt! I was just saying that it is really more about emotions and smiles than any energy saving. Cheers to everybody!

  • @burundustra It was intended as a joke but I guess it didn't transfer over well :P

    so yes, Cheers! :D

  • @burundustra damn you don't get invited to parties do you lol, talk abou a killjoy.

  • @burundustra Oh jeez, lighten up and have a little fun, willya?

  • @garyji lol

  • @burundustra. What is the point of living if there is no fun?

  • @burundustra i agree with all your environmental points, but the focus here was to get people to consider taking the stairs by engaging them in a fun way. perhaps if they play on the stairs from the subway (or whereever this is), they'll decide to take the normal stairs in the office building. who knows? but fun is usually the best way to initiate behavior change

  • @burundustra You are somehow more miserly and grouchy than Scrooge himself. Keep counting your farthings. Did the health effect of 66% more people taking the stairs occur to you? Since you seem to have a fetish for energy, what about the energy it would take to treat these people who would be ill from insufficient exercise?

  • fabulous

  • If only the whole world was a piano, there would be no wars..well maybe the occasional minor one

  • @Voidlad Brilliant!

  • @Voidlad

If the whole world was a banjo, there'd be a whole lot of people squealing like pigs in the woods.

  • Awesome!!!

  • Love this idea!

  • 4 people missed the "like" button. They'd be the ones taking the escalator and missing out on the fun.

  • this is a good idea

  • Love this!!!!! So positive in every way, should be mandatory!

  • I want to walk up and down stairs like that...$;-)

  • hahah that is kwl

  • That should be done more often.

  • There is a hallway like this now at my school. Cameras on the wall capture your pace of walk and verticle variation (height) and transmit it to organ notes.

  • If you want more people to take the stairs just turn off the escalator. Then you'll have 100% stair usage and no money wasted on fake piano garbage! Whoa...

  • okey... how can I miss this. I'm living in stockholm -.-

    It's so cool!! :P

  • I think the noise would really bother me...

  • waste of energy having the escalator going all the time....

  • I hate escalator so, whenever possible I will take the stairs... unless I have suitcases then I might consider taking the escalator =\

  • Fucking awesome! Why is it that Europe always does the coolest stuff ever?

  • Love it! - ironic that it was sponsored by a CAR company ...on stairs exiting from the metro station...

  • DAMN YOU VOLKSWAGEN!

  • Great idea :D now I wish they could use the fun theory for school exams

  • This is nuts. Imagine what climbing those noisy stairs would be like if you're tired or if you've got a headache.Imagine twenty people climbing those stairs at different speeds. It wouldn't be anything close to music. Imagine kids crying because their parents won't allow them the time to play every last one of their favorite songs.

  • @westeightyone you must be a pesimist my friend, you say tired and headache, i say you can have a blast, put a smile on your face, laugh with strangers, and make your day different just by climbing those stairs, and kids will always want more so that means they can´t have fun? because how you put it every time they play on something they will cry at the end, that's false, it depends on how they are raised or how parents handle it.

  • @luisrobertoacosta

You're not an optimist, my ' friend '. You're incredibly selfish.

This would be a stairway to Hell for a person with a headache.

Think of someone other than yourself. It's a PUBLIC staircase. Strangers would be more inclined to snarl at one another than laugh when they got in each other's way. I didn't have your kid. Why should I or any other member of the public who didn't have your kid be subjected to your kid's whining and misbehaving on a PUBLIC staircase?

  • @luisrobertoacosta Why are you arguing with someone (westeightyone) who speaks and thinks like that?

There is obviously no changing his mind; he's probably the kind of person who complains about dirt.

Let me put this another way: He definitely cannot see a forest through the trees.

  • @silversamurai621

you're obviously the kind of person who doesn't have the guts to communicate directly with someone you'd like to insult. Let me put it another way : you're a coward. I don't have that problem myself. You're an idiot. You don't 'think'. Period. There's no changing your mind because there's no mind to change. You don't 'speak'. You just fart in sentences. You make about as much sense as someone who's bumped their head on every tree in a ten acre forest.

  • @westeightyone

Suppose it looked like I was "farting" sentences because I didn't explain myself.

Someone who complains about dirt complains about the smallest, most and insignificant details. Applies to my forest comment, too. "It's a stairway to Hell for a person with a headache."

Wait. There are likely only a few people with a headache. There are many more people likely not to have a headache and to have a fun time with the staircase. Many people's enjoyment > the suffering of few.

  • @silversamurai621

You were farting in sentences because you were sounding off like an asshole. And you still are. A selfish asshole. It's a PUBLIC staircase. If that staircase and escalator area was dirty from top to bottom, the 'dirt' would not be an insignifigant detail. EVERYBODY has to use the staircase or the escalator. There's no getting around it. The enjoyment of 'many' does not outweigh the suffering of the 'few' in a PUBLIC area when the few aren't in a position to avoid suffering.

  • @westeightyone Maybe people with headaches wouldn't be affected if the stairs made a lower-level sound. The sound that the stairs make in the video IS too loud.

About children whining and misbehaving; are they more likely to over the musical stairs? Yes, but that's nothing compared to flying with children on board. You've got a baby or child whining in your ear, in a capsule for several hours. People can deal with that trouble while ascending or descending not very large stairs.

  • @silversamurai621

Maybe people without headaches could go to an area specifically set-up for people who like to ascend and descend musical staircases. Maybe people with and without headaches who don't want to experience the noise of a musical staircase could be provided with a quiet alternative. That won't happen because of the expense involved.

We have to put up with kids crying on planes so it makes sense to give them something to cry about when we're travelling at ground level ? What !?!

  • @westeightyone Was saying that unlike when they're on planes, on ground, people are not trapped in one place with the babies and kids. About people who can't avoid headaches; that's bullshit. There is advil, headphones, ear buds. People who expect or fear excessive noise already use those.

Besides, a permanent installation would probably be decided by a vote. A vote won by the "66% more people than normal" who chose the stairs over the escalator. A vote lost by a few curmudgeons.

  • @silversamurai621

People ARE trapped with babies and kids on clogged musical staircases.

Have you ever had a headache ? If you have had a headache, do you get a headache every day ? Can anybody get a headache or is only certain people who get headaches ? Any and every member of the public can get a headache on any given day. Why should you or anyone else be expected to take an advil or wear headphones in a PUBLIC area that you have no choice but to use to get to where you need to go ?

  • @westeightyone You answered your own question. Everyone gets one. Just because you get headaches doesn't mean you can be rude to others in public or just expect people in public to keep it quiet. Or for people not to take musical stairs around you. Imagine that - a world that doesn't revolve around individual people.

  • @SallyWentworth

Imagine that - a World that revolves around selfish people who couldn't give a rat's ass about an individual's right to peace and quiet in a PUBLIC area. You answered the question of whether you're capable of thinking of anyone other than yourself. You've removed any doubt that you're selfish and extremely inconsiderate.

And quite frankly stupid. It's not rude to consider how others would be adversely affected. It's rude not to.

    Get over yourself.

  • @westeightyone. What a tight-you know what....

  • @aegeannavigator

What a loose you know what...

  • I so want to walk up those stairs...$;-)

  • 1 person is lazy as well as uncreative...

  • they should put it in a government building!

  • This will never happen in the US. Some lawyer will nix the idea due to "increased liability."

  • Hey why cant we have any of these in Canada?????????

  • Yep! Made me smile. We need it on the London underground. It would free up the escalators but the stairs are so long it would probably kill a few people!

  • anyone else come here after finding it on their FB page today?

  • so cool!!!!!!

  • I'd still use the escalator.

  • @thericate

either you have those stairs at home and have played them enough or you are already dead!

  • It's it likely that it's only the novelty that attracts people? Give it a couple of days, and they'll all be walking to another exit that isn't clanging with the atonal and a-rhythmic sounds of fifty pairs of shoes going up and down simultaneously. It won't be fun anymore, and the novelty would've passed.

I take the escalator because people would look at me funny for taking the stairs when there's an escalator present, like I must be some kind of anarchist or anti-technology or something.

  • @micahrumba - it's probably the novelty, but the fun of it too! I doubt it'd send people away.

As for your escalator comments... 'people would look at [you] funny for taking the stairs'? What a strange idea! I often take the stairs because it's quicker than standing still on an escalator, plus I like the slight exercise! I'm neither an anarchist nor anti-technology. I also don't care if people 'look at me funny'... and don't think they do at all.

  • for those that are worried about disabled people..... there is also a lift if you can not take the stairs......

I live right by here, but walk more than take the T.... Is it still there?????

    is it still at Odenplan????

here in Stockholm many people take the stairs even with the moving stairs next to them..... NOT so much in the USA though.... LOL

  • @JustAgURLinSeattle

Odd, here I am in Los Angeles, taking stairs. -gasp- A revolution!

  • This is a wonderful idea! someone said to break the moving stairs and then everyone would take the stairs. Pffft. What about handicapped people who cannot climb stairs? Give people a choice. This piano stairs is a GREAT idea. People who are able to climb stairs will do it because it's FUN.

  • i liked that video

  • ....music, exercise....but most of all, they put a smile on everyone's face! .... i can't imagine anyone could be indifferent about this! no matter who he is or how old! and the prove is in that clip ;) :) .... is an excellent idea, i vote it for all over the world! especially here, in romania! ;) hihihi

  • This is going to far. There is simpler solution:

Break moving stairs and then 100% people go by stairs without any effort or money spent.

  • Human curiosity and an innate desire to explore can be exploited for the good of all. It's fabulous and because I love music as do most people, they've given people a chance to play a musical instrument AND exercise at the same time. So cool!

  • Hi check this out!! The Fun Theory !!

  • It's called Soundstair, it was part of an MIT Thesis project at least 20 years ago, and has been permanently installed at the Boston Museum of Science for years.

  • lol that is the best idea ive ever seen i recommend this 2 NY mostly but thid can acually make a differenced if given the chance again atleast

  • OMG i would LOVE to have those stairs!!!! keep it up make everythin fun-a-fied!!!! lol

  • duviewer, be more optimistic! 'cause i'm thinking it's new every time, depends on you how you go up, how many people are there at the same time, plus the imagination of each one (and i would like to say more, but i don't know english very well). i'm very optimistic, i'm full of life and i think this is a VERY good idea!!!! .... i pick the stairs anyway; that escalator must be "rust and broken" now ;) hihihi

  • Ah...the regulars that use this place will eventually loose interest, and probably go back to using the escalator.

Sorry, don't mean to be cynical...It is a good idea to motivate in a fun way like this...but most of them will probably get used to it and the novelty will wear off.

  • we're glad you like it!!!! we found this a very great idea too ... and we don't even try it!?!? :) they should have made all the stairs like that, right? ;)

  • What a great idea! Have fun!

  • I'd recomend that someone try it here in NYC,but, the steps would probably get vandelized or stolen.

  • hahahaha, lol, oh my, what a great idea.

  • this is so funny lol xD
