I'm surprised so many people only know this from GTA. Don't know any young folks that like this song (I'm 18) so gimme a thumbs-up if you're under 20, people!
I love the format you used for this video...I can get lyrics anywhere, but the pics of past albums and such made it an interesting watch! Happy Birthday Rod!
@DynamoRoberto Same here...I play bass too and dig how loose as those early Faces' grooves and bass lines are...they fit so well. Just like earlier Stones. Hard to emulate that kinda feel. Something young musicians need to become aware of in this age of mechanized and robotic music...
Wow, I must muse aloud at the Shotgun series of photos... I wonder what stories THOSE photos tell ? That is some amazing rock archaeology - this is a five star vid. Connoisseur bro.
I must say in those first scenes of the GTA TLAD credits it was touching to have this song with the scenes of the GTA IV missions with Nico running around, pretty awesome.
Yes, it's when Rod almost starts singing the verse too early...
They didn't "fix" it because it was perfect anyway!
If you don't understand that in today's "perfect" homoginized, commercial, uninspiring, computer auto-tuned music world, it's how many rock 'n roll classics were made - as they happened. Live in the studio. A take was favored for the feeling, not for it's "perfection". Like this one!
@clayopalstar Amen Brother! Compare this to Brit Brit-The Material Whore & Gagme... One studio manufactured with the singer not even necessary. The other organic rock & roll... Ain't nothin' like the real thing...Peace!
@clayopalstar I agree completely with the whole feel over "perfection" statement. I always prefer to record something live with the whole band and without a click/ metronome in a recording studio (even if someones guitar is VERY slightly out of tune and we made a few tiny mistakes) rather than having everything tracked individually which takes away a huge aspect of the feel. As for auto tune... the very thought of it makes me sick. If you can't sing then don't!
This video/music is not allowed on youtube by Warner Brothers, and is blocked worldwide.
I file a dispute to allow it under fair use copyright law for educational and historical purposes, using pictures and text to describe/illustrate the time/person/event in a way that the corporations cannot block, and the song is then in the public domain for all to see/hear.
And the lyrics?
I post them if I can, but there are hundreds of lyric sites for that.
You're right, that makes sense. I remember somebody did a similar thing with an Eagles song; they put info in the video. The reason I appreciate lyrics in the description is my anti-virus software won't let me go to almost any lyrics site, but that's not your problem. Thanks for explaining. :)
Mate, it's been so long since I commented there was no point in responding at all. The uploader answered my question. I happen to like seeing the lyrics, and I like the pictures too.
@Jgeneraledger23 "The girl", as you put it, is one of the greatest female voices in rock music. She was known as Britain's answer to Janis. Look for "Stone the Crows" (where she teamed with bass player James Dewar - you might know that name, if you're into Trower).
@TheOhSponge I loved hearing this after the fnal mission when you kill the old leader of the bike gang and escape the prison with your buddies on their bikes.
@rockcult1 taht still doesn't change the fact that he looks like an alien. he could be the worlds best musician for all i care, that doesnt change his face.
I had just come home from the living hell we called Vietnam, the calendar was about to turn 1971 and this song reminds me of a time when MY LIFE became a quantum leap better. I met some great new friends, had some great old friends, got a great job, moved down to Redondo Beach, CA. and started living a life I had thought about for a long Tour of Duty in S.E. Asia. Had lost the love of my life (Kathy) to a Dear John and needed to get back to LIVING, not killing. Thanks Rod!
I sw the Jeff Beck / Rod Stewart tour with JethroTull opening up, in Central Park for $3.50 in 1967 right on ground level. It didn't get any better than that.
Superb song. Classic album. Shame he went down hill after this and his work with the Small Faces. This bloke certainly went on to produce some seriously dire music in his later career !
@degree7, I grew UP in the 80's, and the little I remember of them did not suck. Neither did the music, which was great ALL the time! I made a ton of cash and don't regret it at all, I'm just glad everything finally turned out OK at least.
Well, they weren't terrible, but was there a single GREAT rock album from the 80s on par with the previous two decades? Except for anything by Dire Straits.
A friend said to me who would you rather listen to Coolio or Rod Stewart. I was like pfft. Get the fuck outta here. You know it's Rod Stewart all the way.
A friend of mine told me to listen to this song because now that we are well past the teeanage years, it has taken on new meaning. Good reminder of how important it is to find that person that "knocks you off your feet" and the things that keep you alive.
Peter Green played bass on S.E. It is really interesting how different Rod and Peter's music/careers ended up. Rod singing nostalgia songs to elderly ladies while at one time his songwriting and performances shook the world from its rafters. Then there is Peter, no finer man ever picked up a guitar, and, if you don't believe me, check out the Stockholm version of Got a Good Mind to Give Up Living. Rod may have been shy, Peter was positively dismayed by fame. He lives in and out of reality now.
When I'm looking out the window from the subway and we pass Constiution beach, an East Boston neighborhood, i love playing this song. Definatly one of the best Rod Stewart. And did you know Rod Stewart and drummer Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac were in the same band at one point. Shotgun Express.
I agree, I want this song played at my funeral too! I have a good friend who is compiling songs that I am requesting. Kinda morbid but that's how I want to leave this earth. My 1st record was a 45 called "Maggie May". My older brother introduced me to Rod back in 1967.

Had the pleasure of seeing Rod & The Smiling Faces in 1974 - cried like a baby sneaking up to the front row to try to touch him LOL - those were the days eh? Always loved this tune. I never knew about Steampacket until today, thanx for hipping me to Rod's even earlier days...
Can you believe that this is the same Rod Stewart who sings all those schmultzy "pop" songs now? I suppose he needed the money, or something. Damn, Rod! You were once a kick ass rock'n'roller, but now ......... Enjoy, folks. This is something from a long gone era. Personally, I miss it.
Hmm. Never knew Rod Stewart was such a shy guy. Your video descriptions are really informative, thanks for taking the time to type them up (if you didn't copy/paste them from somewhere, that is).
@CaliforniaTD I won't lie...this one's a bit of a Frankenstein of pasting, filling in and editing. Youtube doesn't allow any more text than this, and I left out tons of interesting facts - including mentioning the awesome Maggie Bell on vocals!

He may not have the pipes to wail like that anymore but I aint complainin'

If he doesn't he should. Personally I think this is where he excelled in all of the music he has put out in the past decades. But who am I??

Absolutely! As does Mandolin Wind. It is excellent.

@clayopalstar yes the bit that start "i can't make believe that I" might be the best bit I have ever heard

@CaliforniaTD I did once read that in the early days of the band Faces, he would sing from behind the amps on stage.
