  • I'll give it an "F" for effort ...

  • but will it blend?

  • this is actually not a french horn, this is a german horn.

  • I would do anything to get that!

  • As a horn player thats is really cool :)

  • You should make a video of you playing it to we could hear what it sounds like

  • wow this is INCREDIBLE i am jealous of your sill!

  • I can imagine this dude talking to his freinds when this convo comes up:

"So, what did you do over the weekend, man?"

"Oh, nothing much, I just carved out an instrument.

  • Impressive. I almost don't even care if it even plays or not.

  • can you actually play it?

  • What if the parts that resonate sound were lined with say, the skin of a reed type plant?

  • @Rainstar26 me too

  • Making a trumbone should be hard

  • This is brilliant. I play French horn in my middle school band, as well as clarinet.

  • hey is that playable?

  • Just a note from a friend's experience, Cherry wood reallly sounds great in a viola. It might work for your instruments too. Your horn looks beautiful. Uncle Larry

  • The current french horn outline as you see and know today works because it is made of the resonant material, brass. To achieve the same pitch and tone as a brass french horn. I imagine it would be of a complete different design to achieve such an instrument.

  • That is the coolest thing I've ever seen. Although I would be concerned about getting a sliver while playing it. lol

  • Dude, that is the best woodwork I have evr seen.

I am in 7th grade playing a double horn, I would like to have a wooden one though.

  • Masterful Craftsmanship...BRAVO

  • That's really beautiful, hundreds of hours of work I expect!

  • Someone's getting an "A" in shop.

  • !WOW! you can make detachable wood bell for my horn?

  • that is a staggering amount of work. /cheer!

  • that is a staggering amount of work. /cheer to you when it's done!!

  • Beautiful.Thank you!

  • This is amazing! I am a professional horn player and an amateur woodworker. I stand in awe of your woodworking ability. The fact that "It marginally worked" is very impressive to me. You should be proud of your abilities.

  • Your woodwork and creativity are absolutely incredible!

  • holy freakin ba-jesus, does that rly work? I wanna play it. O:

  • You are a master wood carver!

  • tht is awsome man

  • wow try making a tuba

  • that is sooo cool!

  • not very good to tell you the truth. It marginally worked, and the valves do register different notes. As I build more instruments and experiment with different woods, I imagine I will eventually discover a combination that makes it sound better. But just refining my technique so I can build them with thinner tubes makes a big difference on sound.

  • how does it sound?

  • Search youtube for 58scallop and you can hear the trombone I made.

  • wow, this is absolutely fascinating, incredible, unbelievable, and marvelous. i would love to see a video of you playing it. this looks like it should be in a museum! bravo :)

  • Amazing!

  • I've been busy lately making a Smith & Wesson .44 Magnum out of wood. I'll post a video of it in a week, then I'll get back to the instruments.

  • If I had to guess, I would think that the same woods that have good sound quality for guitars would be also good for these, like redwood, cedar, and spruce. I'm doing an experiment now, I'm making a french horn out of wood that the dimensions of the insides of the tubing are perfect, but they travel through a cube of wood. It will look like a tissue box made out of wood with a flared bell coming out of the top. I'll post a video when it is done.

  • Very cool. I'd like to see the playable/more playable version. How do you go from the squared tube at 0:25 to the round tube at 0:27? Looks like a lot of work in between there! What kind of wood is it? I would guess that the hardest wood you can get will play better, but be harder to work of course.

  • a professional played it for a short bit, it is quite muted but you can get different notes out of each valve. Search youtube for 58scallop and you can hear the trombone I made. I'm getting better each one I make. Some day I'll make the french horn again with the goal of having it more playable.

  • It's really pretty. Have you tried actually playing it? I don't know if it is actually playable. But that is very impressive!

  • Very impressive work, Bravo!

  • Thanks, you're awesome!

  • ... I.... I think I love you.
