Just a note from a friend's experience, Cherry wood reallly sounds great in a viola. It might work for your instruments too. Your horn looks beautiful. Uncle Larry
The current french horn outline as you see and know today works because it is made of the resonant material, brass. To achieve the same pitch and tone as a brass french horn. I imagine it would be of a complete different design to achieve such an instrument.
This is amazing! I am a professional horn player and an amateur woodworker. I stand in awe of your woodworking ability. The fact that "It marginally worked" is very impressive to me. You should be proud of your abilities.
not very good to tell you the truth. It marginally worked, and the valves do register different notes. As I build more instruments and experiment with different woods, I imagine I will eventually discover a combination that makes it sound better. But just refining my technique so I can build them with thinner tubes makes a big difference on sound.
wow, this is absolutely fascinating, incredible, unbelievable, and marvelous. i would love to see a video of you playing it. this looks like it should be in a museum! bravo :)
If I had to guess, I would think that the same woods that have good sound quality for guitars would be also good for these, like redwood, cedar, and spruce. I'm doing an experiment now, I'm making a french horn out of wood that the dimensions of the insides of the tubing are perfect, but they travel through a cube of wood. It will look like a tissue box made out of wood with a flared bell coming out of the top. I'll post a video when it is done.
Very cool. I'd like to see the playable/more playable version. How do you go from the squared tube at 0:25 to the round tube at 0:27? Looks like a lot of work in between there! What kind of wood is it? I would guess that the hardest wood you can get will play better, but be harder to work of course.
a professional played it for a short bit, it is quite muted but you can get different notes out of each valve. Search youtube for 58scallop and you can hear the trombone I made. I'm getting better each one I make. Some day I'll make the french horn again with the goal of having it more playable.
I'll give it an "F" for effort ...

That is the coolest thing I've ever seen. Although I would be concerned about getting a sliver while playing it. lol
