This music covers all generations my grand daughter heard this and started dancing mind she is only two years old. She only had done this to Black Eye Peas my son could not believe it.
All the sadness of that time, unrequited love and crying guitars, all comes back to me 40 years later, like it was yesterday. Eric and Derek and the Dominoes, the sound track to my life when I was a young girl, just learning about love and life....
@Thizzpwnt - all you deserve to get is a swift kick in the ass and a big FUCK YOU for mentioning that melodic morning music on this page. Take your pussy music and pussy suggestions elsewhere, little boy
eric and duane each had a little school-girl crush on the other and were thrilled to play together. duane does things on this recording i've never heard before and i've heard a hell of a lot of music across many genres.
there are things out there, like this recording, that make all the pains of life worth it.
@Ras137 its absolutely raging man, there's some stuff i might put up there with it in intensity (like the title track on the Time is the Enemy album by shawn lane, hellborg and sipe) but i really can't think of anything that surpasses it.
This is an absolutely stunning musical musical piece! Two phenomenal guitarists playing together and inspiring each other to greater heights with each bar, with the best backing you could ask for. And genius Tom Dowd in the control booth! Truly one of the honest five-star rock epic records of all time. Thanks for sharing!
i got in a terrible car crash, and this album was in the cd player, blarring this song when it happened. long story short it was my fault running through a red and t boning a mustang at 70 mph but still to this day when i put the album on and listen to this track, it skips a second or two from when the wreck occured and jarred the cd player. the CD made it out alive, but that little 2 second skip reminds me everytime lol. beautiful track, beautiful, and beautiful people here.
@Okesupinus a ridiculous amount of blow, heroin, powerful sleeping pills to counteract the blow, acid, and of course alcohol. one thing though, it never effected the music. they were soley about the music, and according the Duane Allman Story: Skydog, it wouldnt matter if they were taken out on an ambulance, if they agreed to meet and start recording at 2 o clock the next day, everyone would be there at 1:30 ready to go. it was a special time, there was truly something in the air.
If you listen to this with earphones, you'll quickly discover that Duane's Les Paul has a fuller, darker sound, and Eric's Strat has a sharper, brighter sound. It sounds to me like Duane is coming out of the left earphone and Eric the right. Duane does the great, long "waterfall" riff, then a few bars of "Joy to the World" and the flurry of notes at the end. Fly on, Skydog!!
Thanks for this post. I've been searching for this version for a long time. I had it back in the 70s, from Derek and The Dominos Live album. Long since lost the album, and the reissued CDs have a different version. I love the way this version just kicks in, like a vet going from 0 to sixty in nothn flat. Again, gracias amigo (a)
To my ear, the second lead comes in with a fatter, Les Paul tone, so I'm not convinced about customsuzuki's claim. First lead sounds a lot like Clapton's strat tone of Key to the HW and Have You Ever Loved a Woman. I'd like to know for sure, because my ear might not be all that good. But for all I know, suzuki's might not be any better. How to verify and settle it?
You know, the guy in the Metallica "One" video, must never have heard this track. I've always had this song in my head since the first time I heard it, even if just a little bit.
@loveissoftball in case you didn't know, the lead on this is Duane , not Eric. If you have good ears and know the differerence in their styles and their guitars, you can tell the lead is on a Les Paul not a Strat. And the phrasing is all Duane. Which is also why the Allman Band of today occaisionally covers this song. It's on one of their Instant Live cd's
Sandroo228grizz...You hit the nail on the head. What ever hppened to people agreeing to to disagree without bcoming hostile??? Let's all try to keep the comments positive and try to refrain from the negatative comments! They are BOTH GREAT in their own right!!!

@MultiShades Why all the hate for Duane? Just because you think Clapton was better doesn't mean you have to hate Duane. They worked together on this, not against each other.
@jumpmanJB23 oh you mean live when Duane ISN'T there..how about you go listen to the bootleg when tboth of them were there, or just listen to this, yeah Duane killed it(Clapton was/is to proud to not try or get "shown up"
@bthoma1 wtf are you talking about? i have listened to that bootleg version. dude why does it always got to be a competition? they played together to make good music like this not to have a guitar battle. i like them both and KNOW duane doesnt kill clapton. Both amazing. listen to the live without duane his solos are perfect. his pocketing is phonomenal.
@jumpmanJB23 so do you always insult people and call them names when you have nothing else to say? Yeah Clapton tried on the live solo..tried to fill the void Allman left
@bthoma1 exactly and he did fill it. and as for me calling you names, you started this pointless argument. if you cant stand the heat get out of the kitchen.
I remember when I was in college in the early 90s, I read somewhere that everyone used to say "Clapton is God" in the 60s. Not having been around in that time, I always thought he was great, but God was a bit much. Then I heard this song on "Live at the Fillmore" and, yep, Clapton is God.
Man.......Duane just pushes this song right along. Don't get me wrong, EC is playing great here also, but Senor Allman is just in the drivers seat. Sure wish I could've seen these two guys play live. I had the chance, but those days were.........well,...those days................
@cyrixd the tone and style of playing is pure clapton. just listen to "keep on growing" and compare. duane wasnt on that track so you know its clapton. or even listen to hv "you ever loved a woman" right after this one. again, same tone and style.
And the guitars were recorded with tiny amps I believe...Fender Champs...? Place the mics correctly....and u don't need a Marshall stack in the studio....maybe.
And if I'm not mistaken...the late great Tom Dowd was the producer. There's a fantastic Tv show somewhere...where Tom talks about this album and his amazing career.
@bluesguy0524 yes...and if you ever see the documentary about him....you find out what a great and smart and innovative guy he was. rip. It would have been worth any sum to have him in the studio with you.
Went looking for my layla album lent to my brother years ago damn, he still had in perfect condition put it away just listen to the cd now. Still in awe of of this album after all these years, the best of slowhand.
Ithe story goes, that the bros were a short drive away when D and the dominoes had the night off and EC forced some people to go and made their way up to the front, suddenly both dickey and duane realized clapton was sitting front row center and duane frozeand stopped playing and dickey had to turn around... then they met up duane played two shows with them one was live in tampa... and they recorded this album
Spellbound and breathless...can't discribe how listening to that song all these years and still not tired of it!.....the whole frickin album was like that...and whats truly amazin' is im not so sure how sobber they were?..lol But to me ..that isn't a issue..plain and simple just what any musician or non musician would like to be able to have that kind of talent and find somebody else to play that is on the same level...creating songs that will last endlessly...such a rare event these days..
I love both this studio version and the live one at the Fillmore. In this version it's pretty clear that Duane drives the song from start to finish, and he is just on fire. Eric comes in at 1:39 with a little solo alongside Duane's onslaught, then also in the AM7-DM7 progression at the end.
In the live version, EC's two solos nearly bring me to tears. First solo is super hot, great tempo and right in the pocket; then the extended outro solo is just a thing of transcendent beauty. whew..
I visited Duane Allman & Berry Oakley's grave in Rose Hill Cemetery in Macon Georgia 10/28/2009 one day before the 38th anniversary of Duane's death. I was humbled and moved to be there. 100 years from now people will still know his name and his work. Long live the work of Duane Allman "the road goes ever on" as it says on Berry Oakley's tombstone...
Duane and Berry sat behind me and watched little richard play after them in Pittsburgh, believe they were sippin some jack d!! the A-Brothers had ruled the roost that nite!!
But it's good if you find the right person,To share your life with. Then it's a wonderful feeling,But still it's also sad,if you can't be with the one you love.Mistakes,Mistakes, well thats another story. Smile & Peace
Believe it or not, I was in the control room when Eric and Duane recorded their solos on this. The two kept trying to each get a better take and the sparks were literally flying off their guitars. I thought Tom Dowd was going to have a stroke. It had to be one of the greatest moments in guitar history.
fuck all you ass holes out there dont think this one of the best duets by the best guitar players of our time, stick all your bullshit up your ass /slash/and who was that guy gibson made a guitar for maw somenthing get a life this is life here
Sound engineer Tom Dowd highlights the making of the Layla album on the DVD documentary " Tom Dowd and the Languare of Music" . Dowd was with Atlantic records for decades and he was a brilliant behind the scenes influence on the Allman Brothers and many other acts.
You're crazy if you don't think Clapton traded licks with Duanne. Duanne Allman was not even present for the "Live At The Fillmore" 1970 recording; the best version. That song is a 14:49 minute jam; all Clapton. Go check out the album/cd; you won't find Allman on the cover.
Man, I'm such a dumbass, as I said I was gonna look this toon up, I didn't realize I had it on the Assorted Love Songs album. I love this one and Let It Rain. Thanks for pulling my head out of...
im in a bit of crisis and i didnt know who to turn to so i thought who better than d&d fans me and my girlfriend have been on a long break and now we have decided we still love each other and now she said that we should be "more than freinds" because we cant commit, but i can commit and in my foolish ways i just agreed with her. were quite young though so...but i miss having someone by my side and i just feel empty.
ps. i know this is quite personal but please dont give any smug comments.
From what I hear; Eric was told 'bout skydog and he went to their studio and recruited him. I saw a documentary bout Tom Dowd(sp?) and he recalled it. Dwayne made this, and I love Eric. I wish motorcycles were never invented. I've never heard anybody that could not only make a guitar speak, but cry. Guitaral lyrics. I can understand everything he is saying via those strings and I don't play. Mesmerized. Thats all I can say
Clapton first heard Duane when Skydog played on Wilson Pickett's version of "Hey Jude". When Eric heard that the ABB was in Miami and that Tom Dowd worked with them, he wanted to work him. and the rest is history.
Man that sounds like his paul but not cranked up through his usual Marshall that we're use to hearing. Maybe it was the champs they supposedly used. I'm gonna go out and get this.
They were using Fender's for this -was my undertsanding......but hell,no one really knows but the people who were there at the time. Hell of an album, I NEVER get tired of listening to it.All songs are great, except 'Thorn tree in the Garden' - in my opinion..
M*th*rF*ck*r, that is Duane Allman playing, I recognize my man Skydog's phrasing anywhere . But I never realized it before. I just always wrote it off as a great song that was underheard. Especially the triplets and the ending arpeggios. Or Eric was playing tribute to Duane that session. Man, that's Duane. I never knew that before!
There is no doubt that Duane plays lead throughout the entire song. His guitar sounds nothing like Clapton. Clapton joins him mid song with a small lead of his own, then they both play at the end. Duane is the guitar with the higher pitch, and Clapton is lower.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
ddue that is bullshit! I have met Clapton and we talked about this song...he plays all the guitar solos on here. Minor and Major. If you know how he plays you should be able to hear it EC the whole time.
This song is mostly Duane - his signature riffs are all over it.
BTW, "if" you really met Clapton and he said that these are his solos, then he's a delusional liar. But I don't think it's Clapton who's delusional here or the liar.
You'd probably think Layla' intro is EC as well... EC settled out of court with Galadrielle, Skydog's only daughter, for the royalties for Layla, how's that? And EC NEVER mentioned it in his autobiography...
It's well-known that the 7 note riff was Duane - but that he got it from an unknown blues tune. This might explain the lack of songwriting credits -plus the fact that not all get credited on songs - i.e. EC not credited on "While My Guitar...". Plus the fact that there was a lot of 'paranoia' around according (mysteriously) to EC
you are so full of bullshit, and by the way you never met ec,because i have, and your statment makes no sense.most of this was a delaney and bonnie comp.i sat in on these take,s ashole .get a real life
Am I the only one who thinks this is the most incredible solo ever? I LOVE the part from 1:26 - 1:31... and then the entire thing from 2:30 to like 3:30 on is so artistically "phrased"... blows me away. Very few solos out there so artful if you ask me.
Also, is this sped up? It sounds a bit faster than what I've heard.
Yeah, it blows me away. I think Tom Dowd mixed two Duane lead solos together and Eric played rhythm guitar. I don't believe this is sped up. I did not speed this up.
Which solos are you talking about that he mixed together?
The one on my computer sounds different. I think it plays a bit slower, and in this one you can hear the guitars much more clearly, even when they're playing really softly. Some of the stuff on the cd version is kind of in the background... not the main solos though.
One of the two solos mixed together beginning at 1:39 I have three different released versions that are mixed differently. One from the original mixed master, one (this one) from a remixed remastered CD and one from the boxed set.
The original masters were almost ruined by someone tipping coffee on it. They were cleaned by Tom Dowd, but he couldn't get them to play at the original speed. The effect is just to lift the key, rather than make it faster as such.
What year was this around? You don't have to be dead on, I just need an idea.

I'm reading Eric's biography right now and he says he was in awe of Duane. He said Duane was "like the musical brother I never had but wished I did."

Duane Allman is just spectacular in this song

First solo is super hot, great tempo and right in the pocket; then the extended outro solo is just a thing of transcendent beauty. whew..

Intro shmintro! This gem starts out at a million miles an hour and rocks you into complete submission! A timeless classic!
Duane - Gone far too soon! Still amazed Clapton's ego allowed him to share the stage!

Damn! thats what i was thinking - u have to give hime credit - Brother Duane clearly outplayed him - but he was ok with that to make a great tune!

Believe it or not, I was in the control room when Eric and Duane recorded their solos on this. The two kept trying to each get a better take and the sparks were literally flying off their guitars. I thought Tom Dowd was going to have a stroke. It had to be one of the greatest moments in guitar history.

Sound engineer Tom Dowd highlights the making of the Layla album on the DVD documentary " Tom Dowd and the Languare of Music" . Dowd was with Atlantic records for decades and he was a brilliant behind the scenes influence on the Allman Brothers and many other acts.
It is a very informative & rewarding documentary.

You're crazy if you don't think Clapton traded licks with Duanne. Duanne Allman was not even present for the "Live At The Fillmore" 1970 recording; the best version. That song is a 14:49 minute jam; all Clapton. Go check out the album/cd; you won't find Allman on the cover.
tedfio1tedfio1 2 years ago
sorry bro, no version is better than this one, in my opinion. This song makes me wish Duane took his slide off a bit more for the Layla sessions.
bthoma1 2 years ago
Have you heard "Live At The Fillmore?" Clapton jams alone. However, I agree that Clapton and Allman were magic.

Ranchhand432 2 years ago
Clapton first heard Duane when Skydog played on Wilson Pickett's version of "Hey Jude". When Eric heard that the ABB was in Miami and that Tom Dowd worked with them, he wanted to work him. and the rest is history.
RayNDeere 2 years ago
You forgot to mention Duane and Betts froze when the saw Clapton and Dowd sitting in the front row LOL...
tedfio1tedfio1 2 years ago
That's saying something when you can get those two to freeze on stage.

Man that sounds like his paul but not cranked up through his usual Marshall that we're use to hearing. Maybe it was the champs they supposedly used. I'm gonna go out and get this.
cgptony11 2 years ago
They were using Fender's for this -was my undertsanding......but hell,no one really knows but the people who were there at the time. Hell of an album, I NEVER get tired of listening to it.All songs are great, except 'Thorn tree in the Garden' - in my opinion..
hazor777 2 years ago
How come this toon ain't on any of his anthologys? I don't have this disc. Did Eric write it? I'm gonna look it up.
cgptony11 2 years ago
M*th*rF*ck*r, that is Duane Allman playing, I recognize my man Skydog's phrasing anywhere . But I never realized it before. I just always wrote it off as a great song that was underheard. Especially the triplets and the ending arpeggios. Or Eric was playing tribute to Duane that session. Man, that's Duane. I never knew that before!
cgptony11 2 years ago
Skydog.
whatishe 2 years ago
There is no doubt that Duane plays lead throughout the entire song. His guitar sounds nothing like Clapton. Clapton joins him mid song with a small lead of his own, then they both play at the end. Duane is the guitar with the higher pitch, and Clapton is lower.
Equinas 2 years ago
Well, whoever played the solos in this song, it's my favorite Derek and the Dominos song.
ThePondDogs 2 years ago
Duan played the intro solo and plays lead throughout. Eric enter towards the middle of the 2nd solo, and the middle of the last.

Duane is only in the very background at most...Clapton over dubs his guitars..
TristanJB5 2 years ago
It's common knowledge that this song was driven by Duane Allman. Clapton came along for the ride.
blueskydog112046 2 years ago
So EC does not play on this track at all?
nobodynowherenohow 2 years ago
Yeah! It's very famous that EC didn't play major part of solo, but it was played by 'sky dog' Duane.
ROBELT45 2 years ago

ddue that is bullshit! I have met Clapton and we talked about this song...he plays all the guitar solos on here. Minor and Major. If you know how he plays you should be able to hear it EC the whole time.
TristanJB5 2 years ago
This song is mostly Duane - his signature riffs are all over it.
BTW, "if" you really met Clapton and he said that these are his solos, then he's a delusional liar. But I don't think it's Clapton who's delusional here or the liar.
blueskydog112046 2 years ago 3
You'd probably think Layla' intro is EC as well... EC settled out of court with Galadrielle, Skydog's only daughter, for the royalties for Layla, how's that? And EC NEVER mentioned it in his autobiography...
KLOOBA 2 years ago
Didn't EC testify for Galadrielle?
It's well-known that the 7 note riff was Duane - but that he got it from an unknown blues tune. This might explain the lack of songwriting credits -plus the fact that not all get credited on songs - i.e. EC not credited on "While My Guitar...". Plus the fact that there was a lot of 'paranoia' around according (mysteriously) to EC
anthonythirteen 2 years ago

Am I the only one who thinks this is the most incredible solo ever? I LOVE the part from 1:26 - 1:31... and then the entire thing from 2:30 to like 3:30 on is so artistically "phrased"... blows me away. Very few solos out there so artful if you ask me.
Also, is this sped up? It sounds a bit faster than what I've heard.
mattmossop 2 years ago 2
Yeah, it blows me away. I think Tom Dowd mixed two Duane lead solos together and Eric played rhythm guitar. I don't believe this is sped up. I did not speed this up.
musiccuts 2 years ago
Which solos are you talking about that he mixed together?
The one on my computer sounds different. I think it plays a bit slower, and in this one you can hear the guitars much more clearly, even when they're playing really softly. Some of the stuff on the cd version is kind of in the background... not the main solos though.
mattmossop 2 years ago
One of the two solos mixed together beginning at 1:39 I have three different released versions that are mixed differently. One from the original mixed master, one (this one) from a remixed remastered CD and one from the boxed set.
musiccuts 2 years ago
Wha :O?! I guess I'll have to check out all the different versions.
mattmossop 2 years ago
@musiccuts What?! I must hear those NOW, lol. If you get this could you please reply to me... I need to hear them.
mattmossop 1 year ago
The original masters were almost ruined by someone tipping coffee on it. They were cleaned by Tom Dowd, but he couldn't get them to play at the original speed. The effect is just to lift the key, rather than make it faster as such.
anthonythirteen 2 years ago
Serious? I believe it--it's slightly above A, like between A and B, which I always thought was weird. It's also blazing though..
Yearst 2 years ago
Explains the relatively poor sound quality of the recording. Although I feel that the clean ups in the 1990s lose some of the 'feel'.
anthonythirteen 2 years ago
Allman indeed. The only 'sad' is that brother Allman isn't with us today to slide us into submission like he's done so many times before
