  • Amazing

  • So hip. Jazz truth in all its glory.

  • TG to the people who saved these videos, so that history is saved. J.J. is sorely missed and it is so great that these are being put up by fans. Thank you, whoever you are!

  • I think that the bass player is Richard Davis and the drummer is Roy Haynes.

  • wow. this is sooooooooooooo amazing. just wish i could play like them! =D

  • Amazing players. We can only dream of being as good as them

  • who are the 3 idiots who clicked dislike? masters at work in this- so awesome!

  • @pokerbone Flute players wishing that they could do this.

  • 3:08 -- cool how the piano player is totally together with kai ...

  • Anyone know where to get a transcription of their solos?

  • @millertime71984 I'll do it by ear.. for a fee.

  • @millertime71984 Alessi Publications sells a transcription of their most famous cd.... "the great kai and jj"

  • Cela change de la "soupe" actuelle et de ces dernières années (techno, rap, et autre "saucisson"). Que les "gratouilleux" de la guitarre apprennent!!!

  • J・Jジョンソンとカイ・ウィンディング~両巨頭の"IT'S ALL RIGHT WITH ME"~至宝のトロンボーン~ピアノもフラナガン~何も言葉無し!GOOD! #jazzm

  • I saw them do this in 1955!!!!! Cute young guys. I was cute and young too, now that I think of it.

  • I had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with J.J. Johnson at his home in Indianapolis back in the early '90s. Wonderful man -- charming, highly opinionated, sharply peceptive about matters both musical and otherwise. He seemed like a content, centered, wise, and deeply thoughtful man.

(What a kick it was when he answered his phone, and Benny Carter was on the line!)

When he committed suicide a few years later, I was shocked. RIP to a gentleman and a genius.

  • i like the drummer's hat.

  • 4:26 ^^

  • I wish there were more performances like this, with two great trombonists and a rhythm section

  • I have this lon CD, but it's great to hear them play live. They had the greatest sound. Kai Winding was much under estimated after they split. Although I became a pro jazz guitarist, the T-Bone is my favorite instrument. It's guys like this who are responsible for becoming a jazz musician.

  • Isnt this track also to be found on "The Trombone Sound"

with J & K plus Wayne Andre & Carl Fontana ? Thats worth

    a listen !

  • @ScShivers MAN, THAT'S THE BIGGEST TRUTH EVER PUBLISHED ON THE INTERNET!!!!

  • ポーターの"IT'S ALRIGHT WITH ME "~~JJ とカイ・ウィンディングの名コンビ!~フラガナンがピアノ

    #jazzm

  • Should have a

  • toss in Bob Brookmeyer

  • Trombone all the way!

  • Gee, also check out Flanagan's break on this tune!

  • two of the best trombonists i've only been playing trombone for 4 years these guys and carl fontana are the reasons i started

  • @atm552 look up frank rosolino and slide hampton if you havent already. also, for some new guys, robin eubanks and andy martin

  • @ScShivers how is it a curse?

  • Beautiful. Thanks for posting this. My mother had the album "Dave Brubeck and Jay and Kai at Newport" recorded in 1956.

  • No joke, I named my cats JJ and Kai

  • does any one know where i can get the charts for this version of the song, i have the charts for the original gordon goodwin version but i like this one better

  • @RedBaron428 Trumpeters are braggish?! That explains A LOT! ^_^

  • It's a winner!

  • one of my favoring solos by Kai. I don't enjoy his stuff as much as JJ, but Kai took him on this one.

  • I'm a trumpet player, and they are the most braggish people ever, anyone who plays or knows a trumpet player knows this, but J.J playing is a humbling experience for any musician

  • There used to be many more videos on YouTube from this performance. What happened to them?

  • So sweet to hear trombone playing taken to its highest level...

  • I named my cats JJ and Kai

    no joke

  • I saw these two in Glasgow a verrrry long time ago. My favorite number is still "surray with the fringe on top" but can't find it anywhere.

  • @kentheden1 - It's not a video performance but the song is available from Amazon on a CD compilation called "Octet & In Person".

  • wat kind of mouthpeice does jj have?

  • @Tromboneplaya

    King M21

  • FINALLY something 4 the trombone section to appreciate.

  • buena interpretación

  • J.J.'s solo (intro) :

    FFF FF FF F G Ab gliss to A G F G F A.. A

    i'm figuring out the rest

and it's probably about 85% correct

    i'm only in 7th grade

  • @arithetromboneguy edit to myself:

    FFF FF FF F G Ab gliss to A G F E D Eb gliss to E A...A

    E A...A A A G A D...D

    that's all i've got

  • Ha Ha nice cowboy hat!!

  • truly amzing

  • man can these guys blow

  • Kai Winding kicks butt !!

  • just what my day needed , Excellent upload ..

  • Anybody know where I can the sheet music for JJ's part?

  • just transcribe! you'll get so much more out of it! :)

  • @anthonysimeon yes thats true, but in a sence its better to read it down so you know the chord changes and keys and stuff

  • anyone got the changes for this particular performance???

  • Wow, these guys are amazing. And I'm digging the Drummer's pink cowboy hat. lol

  • wtf that was boss

  • This is awesome! In there other recordings, I never heard Kai play like that. What a great duo!

  • i just found like 40 tracks of jj and kai's 1958 european tour for 10 bucks at a garage sale. its killer

  • lucky

  • JJJ = Kai

    Jazz = Over 9000.

I think this is all math we can compute.

  • Not often 2 trombonists can be found to agree about anything! These two have such a rapport it's not easy to tell where one leaves off and the other begins.

  • Dinner for one please? please! please!

  • kai > JJ

  • JJ>kai

  • @direwolf404 prove it.

  • ownage

  • Wow their improvisation styles are so similar...no wonder why they were such good friends o.O

  • J&K..........'nuf said!

  • anyone have a transcription of this???

  • I want to cover this tune another cellist, did you ever find a transcription?

  • well someone told me they would email me one but never did. i have been working on it myself for a while. i got the head down, but i still need to work on the solos and work out the rhythm section

  • basstbones - I admire your ambition!

I was never 'loose' enough to do the improv required on my sax solos. Probably no transcription for them

Sounds like music is embedded in your soul. When music comes from deep within, you don't need a transcrip.

You'll do this! Just keep working on it. When it goes from work to sheer joy - you've got it down ! ! !!

I put this on a playlist titled Jiggs Whigham - trombonist.

It should be all his work on youtube, hear 'The Way we Were' first.

  • yeah, there is one in your manuscript book....

    *hint*

    :)

  • It really moves -and was great listen and another one for the real music lovers !

  • Two TRUE T-bone masters!!

  • Sooooo good. Just how can you play like that!?

  • Practice, practice, and even more practice.

  • i agree

  • In 1982, I shocked from this TV program and I run to the record store.

This is the another version of Aurex Jazz Festival L.P..

  • :-) ....GREAT

  • Kai is a better soloist than J.J. not only in this performance but in many others...more experience.

  • oh man, I could argue that point... but I could also argue against it...

  • I totally agree. There were guys like Kai and fontana who could move through the horn with more technicality and melodic expression than JJ, but at the same time, there would be no "The great Fontana" if it werent for JJ.

  • your wrong. JJ Johnson is better.

  • ill agree with you there. kai has this great gentle sound going for him here that he doesnt convey as well on earlier recordings. Sounds like jim pugh in a way

  • @DirectorWelty

I believe you should study the facts before coming to such a conclusion. Kai was great .no one Doubts that, but JJ was the master. Have you ever checked out the Official Kai Winding Site?

  • Hugely influential sound, two bones flying - check Eddie Palmieri's band of the 60s with Barry Rogers, you can hear Kai & JJ's influence.

I love those harmonies, and JJ's solo, that clear tone! - just when you think it would be impossible to reply to that Kai manages to pull something out of the hat, a little interlude with Tomy, then they wrap it up - beautiful.

  • this is hip

  • Wow these dudes really swing hard!!

  • Reasons to play trombone: JJ Johnson & Kai Winding.

  • Amazing.

  • Actually, the song is called "it's All Right With Me".

  • true thanks

  • Yes because he had cancer, heres a question name three top jazz bone players you shot themselfs?

  • i know jj. johnson and frank rosolino... not sure who the other one was.. 2 out of 3 ain't bad! lol

  • Nice one duffman, the third was the great Ake Persson

  • Does anyone know why JJ shot himself.

  • Was this way before Kai Winding passed away?

  • RIP JJ and Kai

  • To me, both of these gentleman are fun to listen to. But try to find Kai's album of his trombone octet. With Grady Tate on drums, this 1960s Verve really swings.

  • JJ and Kai plays trombone with nice sound and excellent style

  • Is there anyone out there who might happen to have a cut of "Gone Rock" recorded by these two great artist. I've been looking for that cut since the late 50s. If you do or know where I can get the album that has it on there, PLEASE contact this area and upload it or tell me where I can find it, especially the name of the album it was on. That cut truly swings. Thanks

  • The track is 'Gong Rock'. I have it on vynyl and CD. Nuff said, see my replies below.

  • I grew up listening to these guys playing together. They are at least partly responsible for my becoming a jazz musician. We all know how great J.J. was, but over the years, after they parted ways Kai also did some great stuff. I think Kai was vastly underrated, possibly because he was always being compared to J.J.

  • I have a recording of it. I fucking love this song!

  • Oh definitely, if there is a recording, how do we get it?

  • I had this on a 12" vinyl which I bought in 1955 as 'K+ JJ'

I now also have it on a CD called 'Nuf Said' - identical + a few more tracks. - Avenue Jazz - Bethlehem Archives - R2 75995

  • From HMV on line:

    Thanks :)

  • aww yeah, kai is rippin it! thanks for this video.

  • ohhh, pleased to meet you Mrs. Winding!

They are my two favourite trombonists. I'm starting trombon as my second instrument thanks to Kay and J.J

Did you see them live? It had to be so exciting for you if so!

  • @blindbass2 your going to start trombone? if you do I play it and i love my trombone

  • It took the Aurex festival to get these two together after going separate ways for about 20 years. It was exciting to see them on stage, playing as if it they had only been apart 20 minutes.

They did not plan on both wearing white.

    Ezshwan Winding (Mrs. Kai Winding)
