TG to the people who saved these videos, so that history is saved. J.J. is sorely missed and it is so great that these are being put up by fans. Thank you, whoever you are!
Cela change de la "soupe" actuelle et de ces dernières années (techno, rap, et autre "saucisson"). Que les "gratouilleux" de la guitarre apprennent!!!
I had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with J.J. Johnson at his home in Indianapolis back in the early '90s. Wonderful man -- charming, highly opinionated, sharply peceptive about matters both musical and otherwise. He seemed like a content, centered, wise, and deeply thoughtful man.
(What a kick it was when he answered his phone, and Benny Carter was on the line!)
When he committed suicide a few years later, I was shocked. RIP to a gentleman and a genius.
I have this lon CD, but it's great to hear them play live. They had the greatest sound. Kai Winding was much under estimated after they split. Although I became a pro jazz guitarist, the T-Bone is my favorite instrument. It's guys like this who are responsible for becoming a jazz musician.
does any one know where i can get the charts for this version of the song, i have the charts for the original gordon goodwin version but i like this one better
I'm a trumpet player, and they are the most braggish people ever, anyone who plays or knows a trumpet player knows this, but J.J playing is a humbling experience for any musician
Not often 2 trombonists can be found to agree about anything! These two have such a rapport it's not easy to tell where one leaves off and the other begins.
well someone told me they would email me one but never did. i have been working on it myself for a while. i got the head down, but i still need to work on the solos and work out the rhythm section
I totally agree. There were guys like Kai and fontana who could move through the horn with more technicality and melodic expression than JJ, but at the same time, there would be no "The great Fontana" if it werent for JJ.
ill agree with you there. kai has this great gentle sound going for him here that he doesnt convey as well on earlier recordings. Sounds like jim pugh in a way
I believe you should study the facts before coming to such a conclusion. Kai was great .no one Doubts that, but JJ was the master. Have you ever checked out the Official Kai Winding Site?
Hugely influential sound, two bones flying - check Eddie Palmieri's band of the 60s with Barry Rogers, you can hear Kai & JJ's influence.
I love those harmonies, and JJ's solo, that clear tone! - just when you think it would be impossible to reply to that Kai manages to pull something out of the hat, a little interlude with Tomy, then they wrap it up - beautiful.
To me, both of these gentleman are fun to listen to. But try to find Kai's album of his trombone octet. With Grady Tate on drums, this 1960s Verve really swings.
Is there anyone out there who might happen to have a cut of "Gone Rock" recorded by these two great artist. I've been looking for that cut since the late 50s. If you do or know where I can get the album that has it on there, PLEASE contact this area and upload it or tell me where I can find it, especially the name of the album it was on. That cut truly swings. Thanks
I grew up listening to these guys playing together. They are at least partly responsible for my becoming a jazz musician. We all know how great J.J. was, but over the years, after they parted ways Kai also did some great stuff. I think Kai was vastly underrated, possibly because he was always being compared to J.J.
Is There any place that I can Buy this recording of them, I have been looking every where!...lol....I love the way those two play and I'm trying to learn both parts from this just to play for fun but it anyone knows where I could by a recording of this in trombone duet PLEASE let me know...lol.

basstbones - I admire your ambition!
I was never 'loose' enough to do the improv required on my sax solos. Probably no transcription for them
Sounds like music is embedded in your soul. When music comes from deep within, you don't need a transcrip.
You'll do this! Just keep working on it. When it goes from work to sheer joy - you've got it down ! ! !!
I put this on a playlist titled Jiggs Whigham - trombonist.
It should be all his work on youtube, hear 'The Way we Were' first.
