  • A Dwarf Fortress player with poor speaking skills! Shocking :P

  • What was the name of the succession fortress?

  • omg reaction

  • what in the fuck´s name is this shit?!?! hahaha

  • @d4rkscourge How about reading the title? or maybe the description

seriously though go troll somewhere else because no one is stupid enough not to notice

  • @rovernic46 i did, but i still dont understand whats this about... lol go fuck your mom or something im not going anywhere...

  • Shit doesnt work... Whenever I try to run it it says the side by side configuration is incorrect... and quite honestly I want to throw a baby in a boiling hot cauldron

  • When i run my stonesense it just says connecting to DF and nothing...

  • How to play it. I unpacked it to folder of DF and it says Connecting to DF. Forever....

  • uhh

    umm

  • uhhh.... 45fps. that is soooooooo fast. and with 100 dwarves!

  • Stonesense it's ok, but how can you see little critters hidden behind walls? Plus changing between interface only for the sake of graphics is merely time consuming and wortless.

I think we need a grafical 'update' in the way of Ultima VII for example, to keep the thing working like now but with a spin.

Otherwise ascii and tilesets do the work better then any other commercial shit.

  • @dduke83 It's not worthless. I'll be the first to admit that poor graphics do NOT make a poor game, but ASCII is difficult to read and relies much heavier on imagination than actually seeing what's really going on. Tilesets and visualizers simply make watching the game less of a headache-and-eyestrain inducing struggle, for those of us who can't easily see past the field of mindnumbing symbols. It's not laziness, and it's not a lack of imagination, and it's *far* from worthless.

  • @MoogieSRO

The graphics are meant to be like that, it helps the player mentally visualize game events, making the game more immersive.

  • @EngineXII No it doesn't. Descriptive text helps it. Graphical support also helps it. ASCII is a limitation that only oldschool purists defend, and for the wrong reasons. Does the narrative of an illustrated book suffer for its pictures? Of course not; you're drawn into the story far quicker. With tilesets, you're not having to decypher unrelated symbols to figure out what you're looking at; the idea that "it's less effort, therefore you must be lazy/unimaginative" is completely unnecessary.

  • @MoogieSRO

Both have it's cons and pros, dwarf fortress was made to be like that. Also, try playing with tilesets without reading the descriptive text. Oh yes! Your war dog is a bag.

  • daggerfall style would be awesome.

  • Stonesense is for scrubs, tilesets is for scrubs, fuck your shit.

  • Thnx for making this video. Makes me want to play this again.

  • Looks like Rollercoaster Tycoon. Just without the rollercoasters. And tycoons.

  • A Dwarf Fortress player who has/had a girlfriend? Thats unpossible.

  • how do you get stonseed working i cant get it working pls i need help =/

  • Too bad you can't play the game by controlling it through Stonesense. Just a visualizer.

  • i will only play dwarf fortress when there is a good graphics mod for it, learning what 500 symbols are is not fun

  • @korictixor try Phoebus' Graphic Set

  • this guy sounds like he smokes the penis

  • I have tried playing this game after watching it, then swiftly realized I have no Idea what the fuck is going on. Better yet, the utter newbies guide is a guide for people who don't start from a blank slate. Awesome. I give up.

  • @RTardEntertainment watch 51ppycup's tutorials, i started playing dwarf fortress after that cause it was helpful.

  • ...now THAT'S a Dwarf Fortress I can play! Ha!

  • ummm uhhhhhh uuhhhh awkward pause ummmmmmmmmmmm

  • So as much as I'd love to use this program with DF, it seems I can't find one very important piece of information: Instructions on setting it up.

Specifically, installation. I've started DF, created a world, started a DF game, then started Stonesense; it never detects DF running. I've tried placing it as a sub-folder in the DF folder. No dice. I've googled, read readme files, watched YouTube videos, etc. No mention, ever, of how/where to actually set the program up.

    Any help? Thanks :)

  • Ummm... this is really good. Nice video, dude. =D

  • Fun game.

  • You still have a higher framerate than I get with DF alone. ._.

  • Can someone tell me how to mod the game (would that be the right term?) so I can run stonesense? Thankls!

  • There's no need to mod the game, just launch it (make sure you have an SDL version) and then run Stonesense.

  • I'm sorry to keep bothering you, but I'm really new at this; what do you mean speciffically? I mean, I know you said to open the game first, but should I load my file? And when I open stonesense, it always tells me that it's not a valid application. Please help. ): And once again, sorry for any trouble.

  • Just open the game, load your fortress or adventure mode and run stonesense.

  • can someone help me? I can;t figure out how to mod (is that the right word?) the game, and I want to try using stonesense. Thanks!

  • I was wondering about my fortress designs lately.. and I wanted to make huge rooms etc. for my dwarfs so the fortress will look rlly huuuuuge.

And as I see, most of the players use small space, small hallways etc.

And i came with an idea. 10 floor's, 10*10 tiles.

    No walls at all.

Huge free space, one floor for baracks to sleep.

I wonder how it would affect fps, It schould go easy on pathfinding.

  • Dem Dorfs man dem Dorfs

  • Trying to get into Dwarf Fortress now, but the UI's the exact opposite of user friendly. Think I'll give Stonesense and Dwarf Therapist a try.

And I prefer my Nethack in ASCII like most people, but that's an aesthetic preference. Purism for purisms sake is kind of stupid, IMO...

  • You might want to try out MayDay's graphic pack, makes it a lil easier to know whats going on on the screen.

  • DF fluid pathing is particularly bad on your CPU - large amounts of moving water and magma can kill your FPS. Generally when people complain about unplayable FPS on the forums it's because they're draining an ocean or diverting a large river or other stuff. Embarking on a map with pools will save fps if you need it.

  • Lol, I accidentally flooded a whole valley and it destroyed my fps so badly I had to restart

it was gonna be a lake side tower :(

  • Is it just me or do major rivers ENSLAVE, RAPE and KILL your FPS? Not necessarily in that order. I made a "floating fortress" in the middle of a river, it slowed down a bit, not so much, but still, it was annoying looking at my dwarves moving half their normal speed.

  • my brother plays drawf fortress but i often say that they should improve the graphics so this ticks all thes boxes for me.

  • Hah..

    2cat..

    Ha.

  • Oh god fire!!! Quick evacuate the dwarves to the nearest puddle! Seal off the booze! Throw the kittens in the pits! pray to the blood god for rain!

  • Hey manlytears funny seeing you here, oh....I see... :C you dont like dorf fort.

  • "It makes you think? And it doesn't have killa graphix? Screw it".

    Wow. Deep.

  • I loved fallout 1&2 to death. Did you like the Sims 1 at all? I think Dwarf Fortress kinda tickles the same fancy, but actually provides the depth to keep it interesting.

  • @ManlytearsUK

Manlytears, trolling the internet since 2008

  • STRIKE THE EARTH...visually.

  • Cool story, bro.

  • awesome.

    +5

  • lmao 2 cat!

  • Nowadays only trolls say "lmao 2 cat!"

  • >ummmm

    great video bro!

  • I can't believe I just sat through 5 minutes of ummmmmms.. and 15 seconds of you talking to yourself.

Nice visuals though. Would have been nice if you could have actually talked about stonesense though. Oh well.

  • You could have read the notes and the cliffnotes on the side, as ummm... noted in the video ;3

  • @KaelGotRice Don't listen to that self-fellating monkey. This rules and you're a good narrator/guide.

  • lmao! 2cat!!!1

    2CAT!!!1

  • Dohohoho rage much?

  • love the wh40k reference...

    BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!

  • More like Stoned sense! aha ha hah ha.

    I'll grab my coat...

  • 'Sprite' is not a verb!

  • Too bad! It got verbed.

  • Verb is not a verb either!!!!!

  • You'll adjust. Verbing weirds language.

  • I'll weird you!!

  • Calvin and Hobbes reference?

  • but of course!

  • please make the actual game look like this + mouse support!

  • Is this downloadable?

  • There's a bunch of links on the right side of the page >.>

  • GLORIOUS

  • lol BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!

  • You want better graphics?

    FUCK YOU.

  • @KrimsinYT Minecraft has better graphics, but its gameplay is less detailed. If Dwarf Fortress had graphics like Minecraft, that would make stuff easier for newbies.

  • @KrimsinYT

Because swearing at people is mature right?

Having better graphics would get more people to play DF many already do me included but the default way is a huge turn off for people who've probably been playing games way longer than you have.

I want to play DF and have tried on several occasions but the way it looks gets to me and I have no idea wtf is what. The game seems kinda complected and better graphics would only help speed up the learning process.

  • Hey, it's great that you;ve recorded the video of it because my laptop dies when I run DF + Visualiser + FRAPS :). More people should know about your work and praise you and Toady.

  • This is so fucking awesome! Thanks for vid.

  • one of the most important things to avoid when you are recording speech is the constant blasts of air from certain syllables

  • Read the title of the video, maybe?

  • I think they need to make it so mostly all of the controls like spawning and ect will be in it too so it can be more like Dwarf Fortress this just a virtualizer

  • Kael, are you the developer? If yes, it would be good if Stonesense automatically jumps to the currently selected level in DF (especially if I am in the underground in DF), or at least there should be such an option.

The second thing is controls. Why not to do it like in Google Earth? Scrolling by left click + mouse drag, selecting levels by mouse wheel? This would be much more easier than dragging my keyboard.

  • >implying anything related to Dwarf Fortress ever had intuitive controls.

Nah, I'm kidding. I'll forward the message to the Stonesense guys though. I know that high on their list is getting rotatable viewing angles as well as more sprites added.

  • >implying greentext works in youtube.

    Nice video bro.

  • AMAZING !

  • I dont get it.

  • The comments right? Not the visualiser?

  • Automatic reload seems not to work. No mater how low I set AUTO_RELOAD_STEP in init.txt, I still have to keep R key pressed all the time to reload. What am I doing wrong?

  • You have to turn on auto-reload by using the + - keys to adjust it on numpad. It adds and removes refresh rate based on intervals specified in the init.

I don't know how to do it on laptops.

  • HNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNG

  • uhhh ummmm urrrggghhh uguu~

  • Dem dorfs man

  • 2cat! ROFLOLMAO!!1!eleventyone!

    Right?

  • lol 2cat!!

  • HO LEE SHEET! my lord its beautiful!

  • I love the way the magma flows fluctuate in the upper-right corner at 2:05.

BTW, great timing on the Siege. It was neat to see the little purple "?"s charging for the front gate. Cant wait until each is a goblin soldier, displaying appropriate equipment and rank.

  • fuck yeah you are the best dwarf fortress ever

  • I don't know what to say... except that this is an eerie visualizer. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It menaces with spikes of awesome.

  • My pants.

    They have just been jizzed.

  • SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL

  • I was all excited until I realized it only displayed a single z-level. :\

So it just makes it look prettier I guess. Obscures your view a bit though it seems, at least in those single square wide hallways.

  • When I was showing the mountains for a short bit you can indeed see z-levels below as long as there's nothing obscuring the view. It does show multiple z-levels but there has to be unblocked sight.

  • Oh, awesome!

  • GLORIOUS.
