The crisis is that black characters that are interesting like Black panther get given to idiots who think they can shoehorn them into BLACK BRUDDA shit. Priest wrote Panter well and attracted new readers with a revolutionary story that is based in reality and Hudlin basically shat it out by making it BLACK BRUDDAS 4 LYFE YO.
I'm sorry, but I could never get into Storm or Black Panther or anything like that. I just thought the writing was bad, or the characters didn't interest me.
Then again, I would buy Blade because he looks like an awesome character and it could be done in a nice, dark way.
It just depends on the quality of writing, and I can't help but feel that the "black" books lack quality writers.
@BeadleBelfry Alot of times, they do. And this is coming from a black writer/artist/fan. Out of 10 black comic writers only 3 will be actual compitent writers. Who care about story development, and character progression. The other 7 however will only be interesting in drawing graffiti type art, and telling stories so Afro centric, you would take it for toungue in cheek. Quality is the main killer of "Black Comics".
@darlagoddesshate I dissagree. Rocketeer was a horrible movie. The quality was just plain campy and bad. It fell BELOW expectations. Where as Static Rose above them. Static Shock is a very easy to market product. Its a teenage superhero. Regarldess of skin color, teen heroes have been "in" ever since the 60's. So, by your logic, how exactly is Static hard to market?
I think comic books fail all the time, titles come and go there is heavy flux in the industry. I think there are so few comics with Black/people of color/women leads it gets noticed more when they falter. I think any comic written by a Geoff Johns or Brian Bendis i.e. superstar writers will likely sell. I think comics do a lousy job marketing beyond a narrow base.

Here's an idea. Make better, original stories and characters, "build it and they will come"

@jhunter1021 but if a comic is not marketed well it simply will not sell. That goes for any product really. (The film The rocketeer comes to mind)
Static Shock is a good character but outside of the cartoon its hard for people to market
