I know. I'm in college and i know that i want to have some type of medical career, but lookin at the 12 years you have to put in gives you a similar feeling as to taking a shot by mike tyson in the kidneys lol. Good job though, i dont know what medical title im going to hold in the future. Either a respiratory therapist, physical therapist, or if i give away my youthful years then this job.

@platinum243125 no my dad is an anesthesiologist and his calls are very eratic. sometimes he'll be working 24 hours one day, and of the next day. I am 14, but i might follow in his foot steps. Its hard work, but pays well.

@platinum243125 my dad is an anesthesiologist and usually he goes for an emergency to the hopital at any time in the day, any day... so yeah is like 80 hours a week and 100 hours a week.

So many people want to be anesthesiologists because of the chill lifestyle, the money, etc.

Don't fall for it. It's not worth being berated and tortured by the sadist surgeons. It's not worth the years of training and loss of youth. Then, guess who runs the pain clinic? That's right. You get to deal with drug seekers who just want "my x mgs of dilaudid." Constant encroachment on your practice by CRNAs... You starry-eyed pre-meds are in for a not-so-nice surprise of the American medical system.

@k3v015Mk As a physician, life is good overall. I'm talking about anesthesiologists specifically. The issues they face are those listed above; those in pain clinic often deal with people who have no real business being in a pain clinic -- they just want drugs. Also, specialized nurses are now doing some of the work anesthesiologists do (ie simple anesthesia for a surgery, etc.) and making $150,000+/yr, much like NPs in primary care. It's a nice job with good pay; it's not all roses, though.

@bomberfun1 well over 130k , in your residency you get 40,000 ,Top Anesthesiologist's i say probably get paid maybe close to 1 mil. (My whole family is in the medical field so I would know) I myself is thinking of becoming an Anesthesiologist.

If you wanna be a doctor, it'll take you no less than 12 years from the first day you step into college as a freshman, Unless you wanna be a psychiatrist, that is only 11 years. Some specialties such as neurosurgeon take about 15 to 17 years. Of course, you'll be making close to a million dollars a year, so who's counting?
