Really nice mate. You're grooves are so strong and really smooth. I don't suppose you have any available notation for some of the grooves you are using?
Nope! Sorry, my friend. I'm sure I could write it out and post it somehow. Maybe I'll have to do a YouTube drum lesson on this video - I get asked lots of questions about the tom fills and grooves I did here - time to share the real deal with everybody, I think. ;)
I can't stop watching this, my band is going to play this song. How do you do all the fluent rolls down the toms, how do you incorporate the bass drum in it. I can do heal toe so I can do doubles fairly easily but how did you practice this. Like the stuff you did with one hand around the toms and what you did at 1:39. Thanks man, your awesome.
Hey Mike! The fills are mostly just "linear" fills - meaning that no two limbs play at the same time. To practice linear fills, just break down every possible combination of hand and feet within any given number of beats. For example, let's look at sixtuplets: (R = Right, L = Left, F = Foot)
R-L-F-F-R-L
L-R-F-F-L-R
R-R-L-L-F-F
L-L-R-R-F-F
R-L-F-R-L-F
L-R-F-L-R-F
R-R-F-F-L-L
R-F-L-F-R-F
...and so on. Make sense? Message me if you nee help with this. :D
Hey Derek, I know we've talked on here before cause you're extremely cool enough to actually write back to your YouTube fans. Which I've been one of them for the longest. Haha! Anyways, I'm STILL using this exact same kit now in days! Yamaha Stage Custom Standard with 10" 12" and 14" toms and 17x22" kick... What kind of heads on your toms and kick? Both sides??
Hey! Thanks for the kudos! I'm a people person, so I always write back when I can. :)
Here, I used Remo Coated Ambassadors batter/Clear Ambassadors resonant on toms, FiberSkyn3 batter/Clear Ambassador reso on snare, and Aquarian Super Kick I batter/unknown smooth white reso on bass drum.
If you're looking for a killer head combination, go to Aquarian's website, look at my Artist page, and check out what I'm using right now - blows the Remo combos out of the water! :D
No stalk-age at all - I'm always here! The snare in this video is a Yamaha Steel Snare, 14" x 5.5". It's the standard one that comes with Stage Custom kits.
....but probably not with that much groove. I love your feel. This video was so much fun to watch. I was bobbing all the way through. I wish I wasn't at work and was on my kit instead. I'm on my 3rd watch of this video. Kudos man. There's nothing that compares to straight groovin' to a tune. That's the best.
We need more drummers like you where I'm from.
The 13 people that disliked this wouldn't know groove even if it punched them in the face.
Wow - what an awesome comment, Allen! Thanks for that, brother. Where are you from that the drummers are so terrible?!? ;)
Was that you singing on the "Nice and Slow" video on your channel? That was DOOOOOOOOPE, bro! Really nice work, man - you've got a great voice, my friend. :D
@drumology2001 Thanks for visiting my small channel. Yeah i love anything to do with Aviation. I got tons of videos that i need to put up of my trips, more like trip reports. I'm glad u enjoyed it. BTW, I used to drum ages ago so thats my other hobby. No where near as good as u but i can hold a beat down. Anyways, keep doing what u r doing mate. Cheers.
The biggest! Have you ever heard the TOP album "Live and In Living Color"? I used to come home and play that album every day after school for about a year, just dialin' it in and trying to match up all of Garibaldi's licks note-for-note. I just love the angularity of the grooves he lays down - really a big inspiration for me, definitely.
@drumology2001 At first I resisted his permutations under the guise that it was waaaay too technical. I mean come on man, drums are used to communicate. But then I realized...communications sometimes gets complicated, or...difficult concepts need to be communicated. Presently I think his permutations lessons are brilliant. He's just outstanding...and a fantastic teacher as well.
The feel you give across is amazing, i love all your videos, you are an inspiration to me man, not lyk all the overated drummers that we see in bands all the time
I suggest you turn your china over, unless you want access to the bell, saves your sticks and saves your china. Great Drumming!!! I like jazzish drumming :) Keep drumming!!!
Thanks for the comment! Contrary to popular belief, chinas don't always have to be played upside down, and doing so doesn't really make a difference in the life of your sticks or your cymbal. It would seem like having the curve of the bow of the cymbal right-side up would be best, but that's not necessarily true; Rock drummers typically invert them, but they also want a brighter, trashier sound. I prefer it a bit darker and less choked, so I play it the other way. Hope that makes sense. :)
No Problem man, I was just suggesting, i do understand that you like the sound better. But having it upside down has certainly saved my sticks and my china...Still great drumming :)
i love 2:52~2:58 when you're waiting for the singer! so funny how you take a deep breath, lower your head lower and lower, and suddenly start playing again.
*not that that's the only thing i noticed in this vid :) the drumming was sickk
HA! Somebody noticed that finally! This was filmed during the last set of the last night of a 3 night out-of-town stint, and quite honestly I was exhausted by the time we kicked this tune off, so the head dropping is me conserving every ounce of energy during every possible free second I had. ;)
Thanks for your comment - glad you enjoyed the video. :D
I wondered when somebody would finally ask about me checking my sticks! The wood tip on them was starting to bust chunks off because of the heavy hitting that night, and I was trying to figure out which side of the tip it was on so I could still get good sound out of them before they were completely trashed. :)
On the breaks, the singer just looks around at the crowd and smiles in anticipation; the only cue we get is him saying "Nice" like you hear in the video. :D
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! This group actually found ME. I was playing a jazz gig at a local club and the guitar player I was playing with that night is friends with Wayman (this band's leader), and he told Wayman to come check me out in case he could use me on some gigs down the road. He hired me that night for a gig a few weeks later, and I've been playing with him for years now! Cool how things work out sometimes. :D
this is what drumming is about. its not about making money, showing off, hitting super hard or whos faster. its about the groove, the feel ( the pocket).
Thanks for the comment, my Finnish friend! No stupid questions here! Yes, there is a double pedal on this video, but I don't use it until the very end (when I'm doing the crossovers on the crashes). The rest of the work is all single pedal until that point. Hope that helps! :D
I know you probably get this a lot but you should post some lessons on your channel. I mean if I could do half the stuff you can I would be easily the best drummer in my school!
In this video, I'm playing a Yamaha Steel snare, 5.5" x 14", with a Remo Fiberskyn3 FA on the batter side and the default Yamaha clear resonant side single-ply head. Hope that answers your question. :D
drummer is fantastic man!!! the only thing, I really don't like this format of I Feel Good... I feel no energy and James Brown sweated PURE energy.. however, drummer and technicality.. (if that's a word) is amaz-zaz-zing... not this version of the song though.
Im 16 and am having a break from lessons for a while because of change in school. I feel my styles I play are limited i.e. indie +rock+classic rock. I want to look into jazz and funk drumming a bit more, stuff like santana looks too hard ,where do I start?
If you want to do it on your own, then just absolutely *immersing* yourself in the musical style you want to play is key; you can't just passively listen to it, you have to put it on repeat and take notes and try to play along with it until it starts feeling really good. (That's how I learned, anyway.) ;)
If you don't feel like you're capable, find yourself a good local drum teacher or find online lessons videos. I may be putting more lessons up very soon, so stay tuned to my channel. :D
@drumology2001 I am capable of this, I learn songs by ear aswell as watching drum covers on repeat and online lessons etc. Which jazz bands/artists are the most basic/rather easy to play along to ?/ or are there not any, I'm saying I lack knowledge in these fields xD. I will look out for your videos :)
You know, they're more in the jazz fusion thread, but if you haven't checked out The Yellowjackets yet, I would do so; their album "Like A River" is one of my Top 5 favorite albums of all time. Will Kennedy's drumming with them is amazing (he's one of my heroes); it's got all kinds of pocket, interesting phrasing, but is not too tough to wrap your head around. Once you get that, let me know and I'll suggest another one for you. :)
Oh, I see now - forget the private message response I sent you. And the answer is no - I have no idea where you might find sheet music for this, especially since this video uses an original arrangement.
Sorry, man - I didn't learn how to play from books and websites - I just LISTENED to lots of music - so I don't have any tried-and-true recommendations for funk!
You could try David Garibaldi's "Code of Funk" or "Breaking The Code" books, or even the "Groove Essentials" series by Tommy Igoe, but that's about all I can think of.
Not sure I understand your question, but I think you're asking what kind of style(s) I grew up playing, right? I started out playing rock, then progressed to R&B and funk, then to jazz (all with some orchestral and marching work sprinkled in there). I pretty much play all styles, but started in rock (since it's typically the easiest to learn).
Amazing Drumming mate, im 15 and i play at grade 8 its a great feel and i can see you have a passion for drums :). Funk is the true musical feeling of drums for me.
tight drumming and some great licks but too complicated for my liking - funk drumming doesn't need to be too flamboyant as it can distract from the groove as I'm afraid it does here. Great cover though.
Now THAT is how you leave some critique! Thank you for being so kind in your assessment of the video, even though it wasn't to your liking. I can see what you're talking about. I, myself, really appreciate and enjoy complicated music and textural ideas, so we're on different pages, but I definitely see where you're coming from and will keep it in mind on the next funk gig. Thank you! :D
This is amazing dude, you have some amazing skills and a great technique, look like your really enjoying it as well which is the best thing! I myself enjoy funk drumming but am no way at your level, hopefully I'll be as good as this someday!
Thanks, Toby! I love drumming more than almost everything else in life, so I'm glad it shows when I play. :D
Keep on keepin' on, man. Study hard at your music school, and keep doing your YouTube "drum homework" (*wink*) and things will start falling into place, bro.
Let me know when you post a video - I'd love to come watch and give you some feedback. :D
@TheBeatSmith let me get this straight, you think this is bad. but that video of the girl playing drums on your page is good. i'm the last person who would ever put down an up and comer, especially someone young and eager to learn. but if she enter GC's drumoff she would get laughed off, even at the local level. munson isn't clyde, but he's a great player. i'd love to see your interpretation of Clyde stubblefields work.
@TheBeatSmith it takes WORK to get that good, and i think it takes a big old fat nothing to shoot it down when you have no vids of your own. again, nothing personal on your daughter i hope she continues to play and find passion in it. she was an innocent bystander haha drumon

Im 16 and am having a break from lessons for a while because of change in school. I feel my styles I play are limited i.e. indie +rock+classic rock. I want to look into jazz and funk drumming a bit more, stuff like santana looks too hard ,where do I start?
MeTaLMoNkEyLeYrOy 1 year ago
If you want to do it on your own, then just absolutely *immersing* yourself in the musical style you want to play is key; you can't just passively listen to it, you have to put it on repeat and take notes and try to play along with it until it starts feeling really good. (That's how I learned, anyway.) ;)
If you don't feel like you're capable, find yourself a good local drum teacher or find online lessons videos. I may be putting more lessons up very soon, so stay tuned to my channel. :D
drumology2001 1 year ago
@drumology2001 I am capable of this, I learn songs by ear aswell as watching drum covers on repeat and online lessons etc. Which jazz bands/artists are the most basic/rather easy to play along to ?/ or are there not any, I'm saying I lack knowledge in these fields xD. I will look out for your videos :)
MeTaLMoNkEyLeYrOy 1 year ago
You know, they're more in the jazz fusion thread, but if you haven't checked out The Yellowjackets yet, I would do so; their album "Like A River" is one of my Top 5 favorite albums of all time. Will Kennedy's drumming with them is amazing (he's one of my heroes); it's got all kinds of pocket, interesting phrasing, but is not too tough to wrap your head around. Once you get that, let me know and I'll suggest another one for you. :)

do u know where i can can get sheet music for this song?
Irontrumpet1 1 year ago
Oh, I see now - forget the private message response I sent you. And the answer is no - I have no idea where you might find sheet music for this, especially since this video uses an original arrangement.
drumology2001 1 year ago
@Irontrumpet1 Just jam it out!
ssaxby02 1 year ago
do you have (or know) some book or webbside there you could learn that stuff?
themusicgeek1001 1 year ago
Sorry, man - I didn't learn how to play from books and websites - I just LISTENED to lots of music - so I don't have any tried-and-true recommendations for funk!
You could try David Garibaldi's "Code of Funk" or "Breaking The Code" books, or even the "Groove Essentials" series by Tommy Igoe, but that's about all I can think of.

yeha dude, very cool funk groove!

I spent 25 years doing session and club work in Memphis, and I know a thing or to about funky. I like what you're doing here. Fun stuff! Keep it up.

daaaang i wanna play just like that! what kind of style did u start playin?
mikeyt908 1 year ago
Not sure I understand your question, but I think you're asking what kind of style(s) I grew up playing, right? I started out playing rock, then progressed to R&B and funk, then to jazz (all with some orchestral and marching work sprinkled in there). I pretty much play all styles, but started in rock (since it's typically the easiest to learn).
drumology2001 1 year ago
Man, that was nice! i have just one question :) what ride is that? i see that it is an HHX ride but i can't what model it is !
Have an nice day!

Thank you, my Swedish friend, for the kind words. :D
The ride used in this clip is a 20" Sabian HHX Evolution Series (Dave Weckl's original line through Sabian).

Amazing Drumming mate, im 15 and i play at grade 8 its a great feel and i can see you have a passion for drums :). Funk is the true musical feeling of drums for me.
vVitox 1 year ago
tight drumming and some great licks but too complicated for my liking - funk drumming doesn't need to be too flamboyant as it can distract from the groove as I'm afraid it does here. Great cover though.
wickedy081 1 year ago
Now THAT is how you leave some critique! Thank you for being so kind in your assessment of the video, even though it wasn't to your liking. I can see what you're talking about. I, myself, really appreciate and enjoy complicated music and textural ideas, so we're on different pages, but I definitely see where you're coming from and will keep it in mind on the next funk gig. Thank you! :D

Sounds great, and you said that was just the little mic in the camera? Looks like you're miked up well, I'd love to hear the house mix!
drumdude392 1 year ago
The house mix was good - but I didn't get recordings of any of it, sadly. Just had the camera on me is all.

this is absolutely awesome, i love how you've got your sound just right for this kinda track as well, i'm inspired!! :)

Funny - it's just the onboard microphone from the video camera...nothing too special, just raw video/audio. ;)

This is amazing dude, you have some amazing skills and a great technique, look like your really enjoying it as well which is the best thing! I myself enjoy funk drumming but am no way at your level, hopefully I'll be as good as this someday!
Tobsie2k8 1 year ago
Thanks, Toby! I love drumming more than almost everything else in life, so I'm glad it shows when I play. :D
Keep on keepin' on, man. Study hard at your music school, and keep doing your YouTube "drum homework" (*wink*) and things will start falling into place, bro.
Let me know when you post a video - I'd love to come watch and give you some feedback. :D

Then don't. ;)
drumology2001 1 year ago
@TheBeatSmith let me get this straight, you think this is bad. but that video of the girl playing drums on your page is good. i'm the last person who would ever put down an up and comer, especially someone young and eager to learn. but if she enter GC's drumoff she would get laughed off, even at the local level. munson isn't clyde, but he's a great player. i'd love to see your interpretation of Clyde stubblefields work.

Thank you for that. ;)

@drumology2001 np, sorry for the extra post he just signed my page and i can't send messages back haha
TheJkirsch 1 year ago
@TheBeatSmith it takes WORK to get that good, and i think it takes a big old fat nothing to shoot it down when you have no vids of your own. again, nothing personal on your daughter i hope she continues to play and find passion in it. she was an innocent bystander haha drumon
