"portable facilities, including control tower ,firefighter & ambulance service, refuelling and radar equipment transformed the autobahn into a FUCKING AIRFIELD"
That is in Germany,Autobahn A7.
Autobahns were built with concrete and solid foundations. They can take a jumbo jet if needed. Good thing they were built during a time when raw materials were cheap!
German Autobahns must sustain, by building specifications, the weight of a 56ton truck with four wheels, and this pressure allows, at least for some duration, aircraft operations. Of course after few days of them them asphalt should be re-made at all!
@airboyd actually that is exactly what the eisenhower highway system is for 1 mile out of ever 5-10 is required to be perfectly straight and level for emergency aircraft use
actually thats exactly what the eisenhower highway system mentioned by airboyd is for 1 mile out of every 5-10 is required to be straight and level for emergency aircraft use

define large aircraft. They used anything up to a C-130 on them. They weren't built to host a C-5 for sure... But well, what would you take - a emergency highway strip or nothing at all? ;-)
@gplex86 the easyest way ti tell is by the lightposts, if you see the highway and the area around it has been flattened and has no light or telephone poles, they might be emergency runways
@gplex86 probably...i couldnt see anything larger then a C-130 landing on the highway here in the states. a C-17 maybe just barely but i highly doubt it and a C-5 is like a really fat guy getting on an elevator...it just aint happening.
@gplex86 --Too many 'Potholes" on US interstate highways I would think? German autobahns are famous for being paved smooth as silk! You do not want to hit a pothole at 200 klm!
@franthree I dunno where your getting your facts but living in the Netherlands and having visited Germany more times than I can count I can officially say smooth as silk is total cod sh!te lol. For a good part of the road system especially towards border areas are famous for "bumped road (double hill triangle)" signs everywhere.

@TheVWPaddy Inkorrekt! Das ist der NLP der A29 in Niedersachsen. Dreieck Ahlhorner Heide - Wilhelmshaven!
NLP wurden erst im kalten Krieg angelegt. All die NLP's wurden restlos zurückgebaut.

Pakistan is also from one those countries who are using motorways/freeways for the rapid response in a conventional/nuclear war. :)

Poor sound mix, the aircraft overpowered the narration. Very interesting though.

I know the US highway system was built to allow our military to move quickly. I wonder if it's also usable for large aircraft?
gplex86 1 year ago
@gplex86 I've seen them designated the Dwight D. Eisenhower System of Interstate and Defense Highways before. Would not surprise me.

@gplex86 They are not built to the correct standards. The weight of a large aircraft would crush the asphalt.

@gplex86 He really wanted it for the army, because he was in a Transcontinental motor convoy, which it took MONTHS for him to get across the U.S.

@stonerscolony --Ok-man-but how do the Germans drive a Porsche Carrera on the Autobahn at 280 kph--without a perfectly paved road? ;)
franthree 1 year ago
@franthree Because the Autobahn is hundreds of M/KM long. There are some VERY VERY nice flat stretches but the majority of it is not.
stonerscolony 1 year ago
@stonerscolony --So the Autobahn must have speed limits in some places huh?
franthree 1 year ago
@franthree some areas have slow areas but for a large part it's down too common sense keeping an eye on the passing road signs.

@gplex86 With some of the highways I have seen I really wouldn't trust landing the small F-16 on US Highways I have seen some crap ones before.
