Hi there, your written commentary on this made me laugh. I am experiencing the exact same thing. I'm learning loads of Baden's arrangements, all the time thinking "he just made all this up on the fucking spot!". You're not alone! This sounds great by the way :)
Yes. Great "more info". This is what I think about putting most musicians' solos down. It's not always a really good idea to get every rhythm written down perfectly just the way they play them, cause in your own solos you're most likely just going to end up using the same notes but combining them differently.
Beautiful!!! Beleza! Thank you for your gorgeous playing & wonderful sense of humour in the "more info" to the right of the clip - shines through beautifully! Thanks also for a more accurate translation of the title - I'm studying Portugués which kicks my butt - & I hadn't yet worked on this song (translating), so thanks for getting me off to a good start!
Troubleclef - your repertoire is amazing. I like your insightful comments. You are dead right - I spend years trying to work out note for note what a master like Powell is doing on the record, or trying to produce music from what is normally, by necessity, only an approximate transcription of improvisations. Best to just feel it, but you've got to be a great musician to do that. ...cont...
This piece is a good example. I've tried several printed scores but none of them capture the beauty of this piece (or at least I can't make them sound like the record)! Also interested to see your translation of the piece. I thought it was "Someone to Light up my life" - sentiment is the same of course. Keep posting - everything I look for, you are there!
Yeah, you're thinking of the english version which only has related lyrics, not a literal translation..as far as i recall hearing Frank Sinatra sing it, that is.
Maravilhosa interpretação, novamente! Você parece tocar com "alma brasileira", a do poeta que escreveu esta maravilha de letra e a do maravilhoso musicista que fez esta belíssima música! Go on playing like that!
Having heard you sing, I'd suggest you add vocals to this song as well ! Listening to you play (and occasionally sing) is a real treat :-) Thank you!!
Genesis, Queen, Jethro Tull, Djavan, Tom Jobim... I'm really surprised with your talent and your musical preferences! Sorry my wrong/basic english.. I'm brazilian, and I just speak well my sweet portuguese! ^^
But, anyway, CONGRATULATIONS for everything in your video's page!!!
As always, I just love watching you play. More loveliness here. And Jobim is always a good choice, isn't it... <3<3<3
p.s. I am still hacking through the flu jungle, but hope to dream of sheep tonight anyway. Must. Post. *gasps* At. Least. One. (...before leaving town again - flu or no flu...)
Some fine piece of guitarplaying,so this is your own worked out solo(improvisation) on the Chord progression, very good man, very good indeed, greets Victor.
I completely forgot how much I love that song. I had given up learning it some time back (it's a bear to sing without sounding like a Caruso wannabe), but now it's going back in the book. Thanks!
You are right. Its more interesting to do a version of your own. Thats more the way the jazz musicians do it and Baden is unreachable. (I hope my English is not too bad) Best wishes.
Just beautiful. If this is your improvisation on a theme. I really would like some more improvisations. I love all your work Tony, and you never cease to amaze me. Many, many, thanks.
An incredible journey through a beautiful musical garden ... full of colour and tone painting pictures in the mind of the listener. Just wonderful .... a real pleasure to listen and share. 5*
Beleza, beleza, beleza! As someone who can't play the same thing twice if I try (why I didn't get too far into classical music) I think you are totally on the right track. You've got plenty of skills to draw on, and you have a great feel for the music. Keep winging it and you'll be even better than you are now. I agree; you're free!
love the song - warts and all - but the cleavage is appalling - if youre going to unbutton your shirt that low you could at least have the decency to wear a gold chain.
Really loved this! I like what you said in the description...it truly takes discipline to learn a "style" then just let it flow smoothly as an improv like you did here! Just keep making the vids and we'll keep watching and (especially) listening.
I agree with your philosophy, on riffing your own variations on a theme. That's what I used to do when I was playing. You come up with interesting new arrangements sometimes that way.
I remember being seventeen and trying so hard to learn great stuff on the guitar by playing LPs at 16 RPM, and still not getting half of it right. Simply astounding as usual. I find that your improvisation adds a little of yourself into the piece, and that makes the music absolutely phenominal. Five stars!
If this is supposed to be imperfect, I would settle for it. I would love to play as half as good as you would on your worst day. Always a pleasure to watch your stuff.
