Sorry, I always try to look for alternatives for my video cam needs, but Sony keeps winning my heart over and over with both excellent performance and the sexiest designs. I'm buying their second highest end model at the end of this year or early next year. :)

Bought one. Retruned it twice (so far). Poor picture quality, runs hot, camera locks up and battery lasts 24 min. All around performance is poor. Stay away from this one. It isnow selling for $799.

Appears to be a great camera! I noticed that in the photo mode the maximum aperture is f/2.8 even at the wide end, not f/1.8 like in the video mode. The manual doesn't mention this. I wonder why this limitation exists... Going to full f/1.8 would really help with low light photography. I haven't found a way to change this. I have HF S100 PAL.

why the most expensive camcorders have lower optical zoom range? this one has only 10X optical zoom !!!

you dont need anything past 10x, haha honestly zooms really shouldnt be used anyway, except for rare instances

It can take 8 Mp snapshots at 5 frames per second. The video is at 30 fps.
