  • why the hell hasn't anyone modified a jackhammer to pack a tyre?

  • I would think building ecodomes would be less intensive less expensive and might be stronger. MDI domes provides you the airform to inflate then you lay it with steele reienfpforcement then you apply concrete. Some have used bamboo for reienforcement rather than steele after you build the ecodome U can mix some concrete with stryofoam to insulate there are other ways to insulate or coat exterior with titanium dioxide to resist deterioration. Air form can build 100 domes.Various sizees offered.

  • @cdltpx sounds expensive as hell. yes it's easier, but you pay cash for that ease. Peace unto you :)

  • @cdltpx All the materials you are suggesting have noting to do anymore with sustainable building of homes. The embodied energy of steel and concrete for example are huge and make in no way sustainable building materials. Not to mention Styrofoam...

  • why dont people use the gas powered stampers? be done in two point two I would think?

  • You need to get the earth pressed extremely tight up under the sidewall. That's why a sideways sledge blow is required and it can't really be done right with vertical blows only.

Some tire packers though use a manual vertical tamp at the very end to level it off and get the top layer of earth very flat, hard and even.

  • Well done bro! It's impressive how much soil actually fits in there!

  • Solid :)

  • Two questions:

Where did you get your tires, and did they cost you anything?

Are all your tires generally the same size? I imagine you have a few different sizes for different purposes, but for the primary walls, are they all the same size?

  • Two Answers:

The Council deliver them for free as it costs them quite a bit to get rid of them elsewhere.

The tyres on each course are the roughly the same size of tread-depth (from 215 to 185 bottom to top) to give a level course. The diameters are slightly different to allow us to fit them together more snugly. Also, different makes of tyres inflate to different sizes, so it can be a bit of trial and error.

  • Call up Guinness! what was that material you placed inside the tire before you put in the dirt? And what purpose does it serve?

  • Its a bit of cardboard and it stops the dirt falling out the bottom before the tyre is packed.

  • Just 200 or more to go and your done. hard work man

  • 561 actually!!!

  • Comment removed

  • 561 tires @ roughly 10:00 each ....

    5,610 minutes

    93.5 hours

so if you put Superman (the person who can pound a tire every 10min, for 8 hrs straight) to work, you have your earthship walls in 12 days?

How many working days did it take you regular human beings?
