The critics ravaged the movie, but none of them ever won so much as a toilet seat, let alone an Academy Award. David Lean's movies won, I believe, 18 Oscars in his career and for me, Ryan's Daughter was one of his best. I wached it three nights in a row in 1971, in Hawaii and remember telling everyone that I knew that a village idiot , who never spoke a word in the movie was going to win an Oscar. I was right. John Mills won it for Best Supporting Actor. Great, great movie. An epic.
I just watched Ryan's Daughter tonight, and I couldn't help but feel sorry for Christopher Jones' character, Major Doryan, in the end.
@vickiehill1: You're right about one thing, Michael was just plain annoying all the way through the movie. Always trying to start something just because he's the village idiot. But it seemed that he and Doryan were two of a kind in this final scene, so to speak. Both Doryan and Father Collins had respect for Michael's humanity and treated him with compassion.
This little guy Michael annoyed me all the way through this movie...but I must say...that in this scene he finally evoked some compassion. Christopher Jones was awesome through all of it & I truly think that it was his greatest role out of his 7 films...that I know of. His acting was more mature & physically intense & touched me more than any of his others. Great movie & beautiful scenery. I was just awestruck ALL the way through.
The beach scenes were mostly filmed in South Africa near Port Elizabeth because the weather in the West coast of Ireland is generally unpredictable..it is a great film, panned by the critics at the time but gets more beautiful with age!
@cool2bceltic. Correct, from about 2:01 on the scene was filmed on Noordhoek Beach near Cape Town. The wreck of the ship they find the guns and ammo on is 'The Kakapo', grounded in 1900. Today there are only a few bits sticking up, but the boiler is intact. It's the most beautiful beach in the world. I walk on it every Sunday with my dog.
Please!
I believe the weather got too bad to finish the 'summer beach scenes', ironic as they had waited and waited to get bad weather to film the storm scene but didnt get any!
When Michael pretends to be decorated, he is faking Doryan's glory, that is social identity. But the truth is that Michael and Doryan are truly identic as human failing beings.
I dont get it. Does'nt Doryn have a wife(bonney lass) and house back in England? Surely he would of gone home at the end. Mind you we dont get much of an insight into his life in England.
I mean if you have a face like doryan you could surely have started a fresh somewhere else. I dont want to read to much into that its still an excellent film. Trevor howards brilliant as father collins.
i think the point was that dorian was so physically and mentally wrecked by his time in the trenches that he was unable to form a relationship when he returned to his wife. subtle, you see.....?
