What did Don Rich, Roy Nichols, Joe Maphis, Chet Atkins et al use? That's the question....the answer is the particular guitar they favoured and an amp...usually a single speaker tube variety, and that's it!!

Love the Matchless sound. I have a Genz Benz Black Pearl that sounds really decent, just doesn't stay very clean for long. What kind of comp are you using? Great sound.
