The fact it wasn't in one shot means the person who made this could never verify that it was a completely working rubegoldberg. I think more likely it was a set of mini rubegoldbergs made to look like one big one. Plus the chess pieces moving other there own was sus, considering they were wood pieces meaning magnets couldn't have been used
