I'm with links. Definitely subjective. If you haven't checked out a guy who goes by Jass and his channell is delawellsoul you should. Technically he matches anyone I have ever seen or heard. It's so hard to pick a good top ten. There are so many greats and they are all great for different reasons. Santana, smooth. Satriani, so cool. Jimi, innovative. Clapton, bluesy. Alvin Lee, fast. Hell, jimi thought Chicago's lead was #1.

i'd leave all metal guitarists out. metal's a different genre from rock where speed, technical fretwork and sonic extremism are popular benchmarks. fine if you like it but it ain't rock - where power, subtlety, melody, structure, poise and rhythm all combine in something vastly more creative and lasting.

Even in rock/blues I think you have to separate categories: players, shredders, and composers. Some are great at one or two, but not often all three - maybe only Jeff Beck (when he wants to shred, he can) and Van Halen.
