The "patient" (I refer to her as that because Byron Katie has NO TRAINING) is smarter than the "therapist." Look at the Israeli woman at the beginning of the session...she is clearly thinking wtf.
She makes a very good point about worrying about the future. It is always extremely helpful to remind myself, just like Buddhism also teaches, that it's a FANTASY, and I need to stay in the present moment. However, she goes way too far with her Work - with the way her School is conducted, and even these interviews - in ways that can be psychologically harmful. Sometimes the "Work" brings people to an UNTRUE answer that they become convinced is TRUE. Do the Work on the Work!!
This is pretty tough. Not very convincing. She's merely explaining what happens when you have a war trauma, but in the context of being in Israel, those images are not far beyond reality. Can't wait to see part two...
This lady Byron Katie is scaring me, and even scarier is that large group of people listening to her. I'd rather face the bomb then be subject to this lady's NON-LOGIC.
I assume you follow a model that is way to easy. I can only assume which model you follow since you are not referring to any specific model. However, the feeling as such can be a problem, e.g. a trauma reaction. If you assume a trauma feeling (eg. fear) is triggered by thought, I would call that a misleading term, because that conception does not differentiate different qualities of thoughts. In Cognitive Trauma Theory we talk about cogntive factors that are involved in trauma reaction learning
Cognitive factors include thoughts but it is necessary to differenticate e.g. cold thoughts, hot thoughts, automatic thoughts as they all require different level of attention in the treatment.
Also, Cognitive factors include cognitive schemas, i.e. clusters of high level beliefs, often unconscious, at least subconscious.
The thinking of "feeling" and "thoughts" as distinct categories is black & white thinking in itself, therefore way too easy.
The experience of war created thoughts of fear, anger etc. It's normal human reaction. Different feelings are the result of what we think. Think of something that makes you happy, your feeling shifts. The work helps one understand the power of mind. You create your own reality, others may not share your reality. You do have a choice, to react to a situation or act upon it.
@NYCw66. I would not describe "i'm afraid of war" as a thought. It would be more precise to describe it as an expression of what she feels, which may also be related to her expectations. In behavioural therapy one would explore how important the role of a "dysfunctional" expectation would be and also a therapist would examine how the fear is related to trauma. If it is related to trauma, the treatment has to be diversified. BK is sledgehammer"therapy", potentially harmful
BK question "What if .. the thought "i am afraid of war" ...." is already a devaluating reframing. a feeling is not a thought, a feeling might be triggered by thoughts, but likewise it just can be the other way around.
@ Ciaranlove. i absolutely agree with you. The persuasive style is disrespecting and devaluating what the client presents. If I were at the clients place I would not feel seen at all.
I get that Katie is saying, until the bomb hits, enjoy the moment. Enjoy right now. Without the stress of waiting for the bomb to hit. Bombs hit. But until the bomb is hitting, find the state of Grace which happens when we are not inn fear. LOVE IT! Thank you for posting this.
i think the work is bullshit, what the hell is she saying if a bomb were to hit next time that she shouldn't be afraid. that she shoudln't be afraid of war. bullshit man ofcourse your afraid of war what kind of topic is this any way hows does this thought even impact her life this is dumb.
This Israeli woman has PTSD and BK is clueless about how to deal with her reality. The woman is NOT living in a state of grace, but genuine grief & apprehension...
It's incredible how seldom the things we're afraid of are actually connected to what's happening to us at the moment. We poor humans are stuck in a state of constant fear and unease for what? As if it wasn't enough to have to be afraid all the time and then on top of it we're stuck in neurotic thinking most of the time as well. The truly incredible thing is the fact that most people can't even admit that their fear is out of control and so have removed even the possibility for change.
WTF? Am I missing something? A fear of war is rational and realistic. Fear of losing those you care about, losing what you have worked for, losing your security. Her arguments make no sense to me. Fear can be a useful tool in protecting what you care about. I just don't get it and she really isses me off
I absolutely agree with you. It seems to me she is using wordplay and some pretty messed up logic to get her point across. The rationality of a fear is based on its likelihood to manifest itself, not on a discrete black and white set of happening vs not happening.
it is all about seeing how our thinking restricts us in every day life - fear is rational when there is something right in front of us to be afraid of - not something imagined that could happen - in that case it is debilitating
Thank you. I ask myself would I rather live in peace or stress? And I find I would rather have peace. I imagine thinking Byron Katie is an idiot is a stressful thought and so I choose the turn around. In my own head I can have peace if I am not confused.
paige2e: Would I rather live in peace or stress? I would rather live in peace. I imagine thinking "George Bush is an idiot" is a stressful thought and so I choose the turn around. In my own head I can have peace if I am not confused.
What is there to fear? What happens, happens. Either you can be peaceful or stressful. Either way, what happens happens. If you think you need fear as motivation to move, you think your other reasons wouldn't be strong enough.
If you feel fear benefits you, and you are comfortable and happy living in fear and not stressed by it then this isn't for you. It's for those who don't want to live in fear. If you think fear protects you then watch the news instead of Byron Katie.
Wow. Katie at her best, is there any doubt?! Katie has created an entirely new paradigm for healing through four simple questions. The one life doing it's best work through a beautiful woman.
Ok, she does what she does and people choose to listen, and get something. I don't get much,,,,,,,,,,,,,,so?

► Ms. Katie, if you want to see war victims and images, go next door.
The war is next door in occupied Palestine, and these claim-jumping Jews used you to promote that war.

Grace and truth are recognized from the Awareness within.
Fear can only be projected if experienced. War can only go on if we keep it alive by fear.
So where will the war go if there is no fear?
This is one of Katie's most courageous videos being posted. I love her for that.

Images in mind are not reality
Grace is in every moment.
See what is before you
Be greatful for the keyboard
for the chair you sit on
for the hair that is growing
for your heart that is pumping
in a state of grace.
PERFECT GRACE is here!
