  • This version would have been The Perfect tune for Karen Carpenter to have covered.

    REALLY Knocked Me Out . . .

  • I'm from Detroit and I haven't seen that Jzz logo in decades! Thanx!

  • Her Body & Soul is also chilling...

  • Gosh I love the old souNd ! heard this on Temple University Member Supported WRTI !

    9o.1

  • beautiful to the point of tears......also check out ricky Lee Jone's version of the same tune......really good.

  • Bet Car was superb but Chaka did it in one take I believe on the Griffin Park album with Chick.

  • i love this version. Irene Krall does a great job of it too.

  • 1 person has no clue what true talent is! :( sooooo sad !

  • LUV LUV LUV BETTY CARTER.....SUPERB PIECE

  • Sweet enough! But I really like her "live" version better--more stylization, more that Betty Carter touch!!!!

  • Sweet enough. But I like Betty's "live" version better--more stylization!

  • It's inevitable that everyone has different tastes and opinions. What we have here for me

is a transendent work of artistry. She was just one of a kind like sassy and ella. To

compare endlessly is to miss the magic of her styling. Style - class and incredible

talent seldom seen today, in my opinion. Thanks so much for the post.

  • Betty is very good - certainly better than 90% of the versions available on YouTube - but Carmen did it best on a 1965 Mainstream album simply called "Carmen McRae." Don't think it's ever made it to CD. "Bittersweet" is the studio version. I heard her do it live at Wolman Amphitheater in Central Park in 1972 or '73. Absolutely stunning. I like Betty better on the up-tempo pieces like "Surrey with the Fringe on Top."

  • I love everything about t his sing. The first time I heard it however, was a version by Julius LaRosa. His version is my favorite because it was the first; however, I can't find it anywhere. Pls. pls. someone post it.

  • Such a clear song. Reminds me of Islington when I was a boy for some reason.

  • Ella was Swing, Billie was Blues, Nina was Soul, Betty was the definition of jazz. What is jazz after all? Total improvization! If you take the concept of JAZZ, it wasn't supposed to be locked in a recording, it is supposed to be LIVE and IMPROVIZED. For that matter, BETTY WAS JAZZ!!!

  • This is my favorite Betty Carter song. (I never noticed a butchering of the lyrics, re: that comment). I love everything about her phrasing, her tone, her voice, it's just magical. Thanks so much for posting this. : )

  • great accompaniment, decent voice but she totally butchers the lyrics which are fairly sophisticated. Overall, i still like it (except when she starts in with the chronic) for me, the best version (by a good margin) is carmen macrae's, which appears on an absolutely stellar (but oft spoken about) album, "Bittersweet". That album also has great accopmpaniment (mundell lowe).

  • @ilikemike97 Carmen McRae said that the one and only jazz singer was Betty Carter ;)

  • @Chiktail

People say a lot of shit; Sinatra said tony bennett was the best singer in the world.

  • I sat next to Betty Carter on a flight from Detroit to New York after she had performed at the Montreux Jazz Fest. What she didn't know was I had 2 of her cd's with me at the time, but I was scared to even say hello, LOL. That was years ago, not too much later she passed away.

  • Betty is always great. But take a listen to the way Rikki Lee Jones sings this too. I like when Bill Evans plays it. Betty gets those long, drawn out pure notes with no vibrato.

  • INSIDE BETTY CARTER this is one of the best vocal albums and possibly Betty's best. Superb rhythm section ( Harold Mabern on piano ever reliable Bob Cranshaw on bass and Roy McCurdy on drums) is one of the reasons why she sounds particularly great here

  • So beautiful. The version on 'The Audience With...' still floors me.

  • @Cianaodh1 I Would floor it is always too high, I could not ever go up to him ,sorry.

  • love it!

YouTube also displays her singing "How High the Moon"...a fav of mine...originally done, of course, by Les Paul and Mary Ford.

  • Que coisa linda.....

  • I think I have this on "INSIDE Betty Carter", but my favorite version is on "The Audience with Betty Carter. It is really a revelation to hear how the song evolved with her over the years". Thanks for posting one of our Jazz Masters!

  • thats really stunning.

  • this song inspired me to be a jazz singer.

my profession that has blessed me for the last 24 years.

    thank you betty carter!

    one of my favourite singers.

  • have recently discovered this song. i love it.

  • A jazz classic .. She could capture the full range of human emotion in her singing... Betty could as well make you cheerful and easygoing w. her upbeat songs

  • I love Betty. Her spirit and voice are the epitome of what jazz is all about. I will always treasure her recordings. Thanks for sharing this.

  • Yes she IS--she is on the ning network on their sultryjazzdivas page, thanks cartier gl--lovely voice.

  • Thanks for posting this gem Man. Love the tone and the Blues accents below the surface., also her genius on everything. She sings! She swings!

  • I am pleased to know that others appreciate her tremendous artistry,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,thanks for the comment,,,,,

  • I shall FOREVER celebrate the life and artistry of Betty Carter! I will love her forever!
