  • The best symphony!!!

  • Why did someone accidentally hit the ''dislike'' button? ;)

  • @zflauta92 you said It: It was an accident for sure :D

  • My favorite Rachmaninoff symphony. An ineffable masterpiece.

See the Wikipedia article on his Third Symphony, for background on its composition and reception:

  • Please tell us who the performers are on this recording.

  • Russian soul...what to say... Simply divine!

  • What's the orchestra and conducter in this recording? Thanks for uploading

  • @cj12cc I think it's Evgeny Svetlanov in his 1rst recording made in the 60's. The best version!

  • @kaidaniev Thanks for this info. Svetlanov was unquestionably one of the geatest conductors of the 20th c. so this would not surprise me, he never fails to give a great performance of anything he conducts!

  • :45 sounds a lot like his Symphonic Dances.

  • @dinoimeri There both semi quotations from his first symphony I believe.

  • Interesting....

  • This Symphony was great! It's sound more mature than the second symphony

  • @TwilightESBS if that is possible at all...

  • Saw this at the St. Louis Symphony in March. Oh boy was it fantastic.

  • :25 reminds me of Ride of the Valkaries

  • I love this symphony! It is one of my all time favorites.

  • It's terrible that Rachmaninoff's works were received so badly in his lifetime. He, much like Elgar, stuck to his Romantic traditions and produced music that, although behind his contemporaries in tonality and form, will never be forgotten.

  • It would be terrible except Rachmaninoff's works were actually received very well during his lifetime. He was well renowned and much sought after both as a composer and as a performer starting early on with his Prelude in c# minor at age 18-19

  • Some pieces (like the prelude, the 2nd Symphony, and the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini) were received with great acclaim. But, if you read his biographies and the rantings of critics, you'll find that much of his work was heavily ridiculed. The failure of the 1st Symphony drove Rachmaninoff to seek counseling.

  • DarkRaimundi thank you for reminding me how beautiful the world is because of Rachmaninoff.

  • I first listened to this symphony 24 years ago. Rachmaninoff wrote melodies that capture you for life. No one else comes close. He exposed his heart and mind to the ears of all humanity. You are the best.

  • By George this is stunning!

  • I think some parts are way too fast, but overall, it's really good.

  • Another set of your videos dedicated to me, I do not know now how I can thank you! This is such a fantastic piece, all of Rachmaninov's symphony's are amazing, all different from the one before. May I ask who the performers are, this is a fantastic performance! Thanks again for dedicating this to me!

  • You have complete reason. The Tchaikovsky symphonies are very similar one to another, but in Rachmaninov, they are extremly different one to another. The first,in the style of Rimsky-Korsakov and Tchaikovsky, the second in the mature style of Rachmaninov and the third in a postume style, very very russian, nostalgic and a bit modernist.
