This is a really good tutorial, perfectly paced and clear, but it only takes one listen to the original to find that this is not how the intro goes, which is very frustrating for a novice guitarist like me who learns by seeing someone else do it. I don't want to learn someone's interpretation, however similar; I want to learn Mr. Mctell's version, and then interpret it for myself if I want to!
awesome lesson, but in the future explain through tablature (like you do in the chorus tutorial :D ) rather than just explaining which strings to strike.
Excellent lesson. Although I have been playing electric for years I am new to acoustic fingerstyle and have struggled to find a lesson showing both hands so clearly and at slow speed, with written explanation too! Thanks for the time it took to put this together, 5*****
your playing the first chord different to what it says in the discription... your playing Fifth and first, fourth and third, sixth second fourth and third... which is the right way???
Great post, very peaceful piece, I'm learning it thanks to your help. Im playing a classical guitar and can't quite get the thumb over, guess its bar chords for me. Keep up the great videos.
First finger holds first and second string at the first fret, second finger holds third string at second fret, third finger holds fourth string at third fret, hold the sixth string first fret with thumb. This is a standard fingerpickers way of holding the F chord instead of using a bar making it easier to use your pinky to fret other strings when needed, usually to fret the second string third fret.
Thanks fogroopa - it's great to see someone generous enough to share their music and teaching people good fingerpicking techniques. How long have you been playing?
I have been playing for 36 years (same guitar). I learned this tune back then and had not played it for many years until I resurrected it for this video.
