I want to find OJ and ask him to teach me. It''ll be awesome to defend oneself with a baton, stick or anything like it. If it comes down to it and justified, I can use my gun but a baton is nice to know or knife
So I was cruising around on the internet and it turns out I found out who OJ really is... WOW. He is the real deal stick fighting guy. He is no joke, very cool that you could get together with him. Thanks Nutn!
Nutnfancy, I've always considered law enforcement as a career choice in my future and I own a few expandable batons but I'd like to know your opinion on both Monadnock brand expandable batons and nightsticks, thanks.
@kwarnisplayer I can't find it anywhere in the US for civilian purchase. But I think a good alternative to the Bonowi Camlock is the Monadnock AutoLock HG baton. Seems just as thick and it's just as easy to close.
Oh I learned quite abit, I ve watched this and practiced 50 times or more. I had a retired fed agent work with me on the techinques on this video. Thank you for your effort
Catching up on some "Man TV" during my time off for the 4th......watching Deadliest Warrior on Spike TV..and who do I see.....Officer Jared representing the Maori Warriors. I did a double take:-)
for not training with each other for a year, they do have good control of their techniques, lot of good stuff they used to keep in mind for my tactics later.
Very impressive video, Nut'n. Since I'm assuming these techniques are mostly inspired by Kali/Escrima, I was very surprised to see the lock at 4:21 which is almost exactly like a technique with the medieval German messer (long knife). It never ceases to amaze me how true the adage of "only so many ways to move the body effectively" really is. On a side note, Nut'n, where should I go to find out the legality of a baton in my state? I can't seem to find it. Thanks.
Impressive attributes. You watch theese two guys practice, and you can feel it through the eyes that they are not messing around, but still everything is very relaxed and freidnly. THAT shows just how deep their abilities goe. I would love to learn from these two gentelemen. Thanks for posting. This is instructive and inspiring.
Finally someone that puts enough weigth on "basics", you see this all to rarely in almost all martial systems out there today.
Timing, positioning, speed and accuracy.
Force isn't really a problem when wielding a metal stick like this unless one really wants to finish the fight and all those fancy traps and locks are literally almost never used.
Although for intimidation I suppose some figure eigths and wrist spins might have a use.
@Churchx77 well my 21'' is actually 53 centimeters or around 19 and three quarters of a inch from tip to tip when extended. i would consider a 21 or 26 for sure in fact if i could go back id probably get the 26.
I ended up getting hte 16' because of the weight of the thing. The mechanism makes it heavier than other sticks of that price range. Honestly its perfect if you go for civilian carry or law enforcement dressed in civies. And you do feel the weight. But its an overall great product.
@partingbead there is no discount but pfi dude has the cheapest price anywhere i could find on the net. trust me even at that price you will not be disapointed

one thing i dont understand, during the warmups I saw them both slapping their armed hand with their offhands. Is this for a point of reference or...?
To answer Nutn's question at 7:57, Yes...Ive seen a sober, coherent man take that shot over and over and laugh at 4 officers that were delivering the strikes. BUT...This guy was 6' 9", 375 lbs and was known to break things over his head for a bar-joke. So if you have to deal with "this guy" have a cover officer....or 3.
cool. I'd prefer a gun at good range, but you never know when you're in a close combat self defence situation. Another good tec is a strong based front kick. A weapon always gets 95% of the awareness of an attacker. A strong frontkick will stun an attacker and set up the baton followup strike
What's the deal? PFI dude isn't going to hook up TNPers with a discount code for the Smartlock? Not even throwing in a free copy of OJ's DVD? Say it ain't so...
@chevydad83 The discount code for the baton should be good. In fact for Smarlock baton you will find no better pricing on it than thru the Nutnfancy code. I will ring him up to make sure.
@chevydad83 i bought one the other day and the discount was removed after the purchase was made so i am guessing no discount but the baton is great and i couldn't be happier with it over asp
@geewilmas Agreed, when fighting empty-handed. I've trained Western and Thai Boxing for 23 years and am very acquanited with the concept of keeping your guard up when fighting empty-handed. When fighting with a weapon the dynamics of counter-balance change for balance and power generation, along with weapon manipulation when utilizing an edged-weapon to avoid cutting one's own arm. Anyone who has spent a significant amount of time swinging a stick or knife understands this concept.
@geewilmas Much of this has to do with range also, weapons provide additional range that negates the necessity of constantly keeping the support hand up when at "Distancia Largo" or long range, so long as the hand moves to a guarded position when closing to "Distancia Corto" or close range. Getting an overly stationary arm hit a few times in full-contact stick fighting teaches you this lesson fast.
hey nut'n, thanks for the video. i recently bought a expandable baton since i found out i can concealed carry it without a permit in VA. i am ineligible for a concealed permit until i turn 21 and open carry simply draws a lot of unwanted attention. this video really helped me learn how to use a baton looking forward to the next one.
@TacticalTuckFard Roger that dude...very glad to help. OJ is an expert who's also a great teacher. You will like the other videos too I think. Will try to get the edited together soon.

Great control during the drills, but I have one question. Was that particular drill specific to attacks of the upper quarters? I only ask because I'm not sure if it was free form (spontaneous) and therefore I was wondering why the lower quarters were not engaged.
But like I said, great control. Your techniques are a great demonstration of your dedication and training.
@OCPRS We actually flowed through 3 different drills during the warm-up that was caught on film, and you're right, 2 of them isolate the high-line, and the other works the mid to high-line. And yes, the drills are free form to a degree, depending on whether your'e isolating a particular zone or targeting the whole body. General methodology is to isolate zones and then combine them all together. Hope that makes sense!
Good to see LE being taught Kali / Escrima ! The concept of defanging the snake alone can put a LE officer light years ahead of a street punk gangster wheeling a knife out there!! Keep up the good work! Salute!!
Ugh I seriously don't know why these are banned in 90% of states. At least for civilians. Yes lets ban metal sticks but make more lethal firearms, tasers, and pepper spray legal.
@sikvenum82 You can own a baton any State, the only restrictions are on how you carry one on your person in public, or in a vehicle. California has the most restrictive laws on expandable batons, but you can still own one in your home from my understanding. You might want to check your local laws.
@OfficerJared You can own it but you can't use it which kind of makes buying one a moot point to then. See I live in California and even having one is pretty much illegal. Its really up to your luck which cop comes knocking on the door. Just about every states' penal code has the word billy listed as prohibited and alot of judges haves decided that includes expandable batons... However some states like Arizona do allow one to carry batons if they have a concealed gun license.
@Whisper6911 I think you statement might be valid in your country, but is definitely an ethnocentric assumption. In countries like the US where law abiding civilians can own a firearm, most men have one. So statistically alone your psychology doesnt add up. You might be able to make other stereotypical assumptions of that sort in the US like the oversized pickup truck etc, but in some regions again that might be more common than not.
@OfficerJared actually, statistics clearly show that most men, especially in america, are insecure about their penis, and more then half have had a homesexual fantasy that they feel uncomfortable with.
lol the main reason i am so sure about this is cuz it happens to refer to some rather primal aspects of male human behavior.
in any case u might ask yourself: what are you defending, and why do u feel the need to defend it?
oh lol i forgot about that... but it wasnt an insult at all. why would u assume it was? do u hate gay people or something? lol nevermind.... nevermind.... for the record: i didn't mean it as an insult. look up timothy treadwell though, and ull see what i ment by that. denial can be awfully selfdestructive... f#cking homophoobia... i thought we had evolved past that by now... at least enuff for an innocent little joke... oh well...
@Whisper6911 If you were here on one of Nutn's videos, and someone else wrote in a similar comment, I would say the same thing. In my experience, calling someone a homosexual is NOT a compliment..and for the record, he is straight. I know who timothy treadwell is, I saw Warner Hartzog's documentary about him and also read a fair amount about his life and death with the grizzlies. -- Veri
@Whisper6911 Hey Whisper...don't bring you homo analyzing to my vids anymore...this is idiotic commentary that I suspect is projectionist in nature. You have some strange issues to deal with but they're not welcome in these comments and if you persist, you won't be welcome either. I will block you myself. -Nutnfancy, hetero extraordinaire
I Like the non lethal Videos in the project. I have classes in Maryland two days a week where as a Virginia ccw holder I can not carry my firearm and am always looking for alternative means of self defense, keep them coming!!
banning things like batons, stunguns, pocket knives, really is stupid... anybody that watches Lockup:Raw on tv can see how to make a lethal weapon out of plastic coffee cup lid.. guess they are next... shhh.. dont tell the TSA
@Whisper6911 If this is the best you can come up with, don't even bother commenting again. Trolling like this will get you blocked. Shame on you. -- Veri
@Whisper6911 Having an opinion will NOT get you blocked here, but if you call another one of my shooters gay.... you're gone. Be respectful.. or walk away. -- Veri
OJ is just bad ass! I wish he was on my squad. I love working with guys that can speak technically about kicking somebody's ass. It's a greatly under appreciated art form!
I understand the baton training, but who carries it othe than LEO's . With that, any intended strikes in other than large muscle groups, will be another level of force. He addressed that. WOW !lIGHT BULB JUST WENT OFF! How bout intro into "weapons of convienience." Like common household items . I love these videos cause it springs ideas. Thanks again!!!!
@zuyzuy The primary distributor of the Smartlock Baton in North America is DEENSIDE USA, and firearmsprostore(dot)com has them for sale(some of the best prices around) hope that helps =]
This looks great, but how realistic is it? In the news when there's a report about policemen using battons (no matter where in the world) it's not like that. They all use the battons like ordinary sticks and hit as good as they can. just look the reports about football hooligans, demonstrants, etc.
great video. loved the filipino baton techniques too...very much resembled. Why reinvent the wheel? Looking forward to seeing follow on videos. Note to anyone interested in ASP / Manodnock / other baton employment: LEARN WHAT IS CONSIDERED LETHAL AND LESS THAN LETHAL. If you hit someone in the melon and kill them and deadly force is not required, you WILL be charged with murder!
It's great to see some FMA inspired content, thanks OJ. I look forward to seeing more and learning a few things. I've trained/played a bit of Arnis the past couple years and am really enjoying it.
hey, kool....they are doing the martial art i practice, Pekiti-Tirsia Kali. thanks for the shout out to Grand Tuhon Leo Gaje, Jr. he is an excellent instructor and the true head of real fighting system.
No matter what weapon you have, if you can't perform good footwork to angle your way out of your attacker's forward attack, you can be overtaken quickly. I loved that last part where the side-stepping was shown. OJ uses wide side steps to avoid the attacker and reposition. Good stuff. I know a bit of Wing Chung and the stepping and stance are critical to using your attackers forward motion commitment against him to counter-attack. Sure wish battons were legal in my state.
Of general interest to anyone viewing this please read
Search Youtube on the basic moves of "Le Canne".
Also to anyone interested in the history of stick fighting in the UK and its far flung commonwealth check out Bartitsu and the life of E. W. Barton-Wright on Youtube
I think I'll have to find some info on the Smart lock and take it to my superiors. I like the ASP , like the monadnok even better. But this is sick. want to see some techinque demostration so I can take it to my group.
my department would have a very hard time considering most this "less than lethal". we would call these "less lethal". Big difference. Great info/video.
The baton work is great but this martial shines even more when it comes to bladed art. Really looking forwards to a series of videos dedicated to that.
TNP has officially integrated all the things i love in life. Guns, knives, Bushcraft, And most of all martial arts. I love how its Kali too! Thats a brilliant and highly effective martial art.
Just a thought, I've spent many years fighting and training fighters. Doing holds when you're in elbow range is not a good idea. You may break their arm, but you can very easily loose your head.
Great to see this on TNP. It's been a while since I did martial arts nad I make no claim to being any kind of guru. In my opinion this vid is on the money. Good basic strikes, footwork and balance, work the angles and you have a fighting change. Under pressure the fancy techniques are not used or don't work. Thanks for keeping it real OJ.
Are there special batons to practice sparring with? Maybe not as heavy or hard so you don't do any major damage to your sparring partner? It would seem like a good training tool
How does one choose the right length between 16", 21" and 26"?
Does it have to do with "philosophy of use", or "size and weight constraints" , or skill level, or your personal size, or something else completely. I am 6'4", 205lbs if that helps at all and plan to have one in the car for self-defense only or emergency use. Only a few years of martial arts, none of those with sticks thought.
@alexebox Based on the your info (your build and the planned usage), I would definitely say the 21" or 26". The 21" is definitely the most popular size, but many like the additional reach with the 26".
Excellent "basics" by OJ. I have a buddy who has been taking martial arts [to include kali, tai chi, and wing chung] for 30+ years and teaching for 10+ and those very comments about positioning, accuracy, angling, etc. are what he talks about to all of his students [myself included]. What OJ is talking about has been proven by years of tribal fighting in the Philippines and acknowledged throughout the martial art community. Well done.
Ok. First. Your an idiot and your comentary proves this. Second. America was pioneered by people from every land and background. Third. I have seen those exact drills used by masters of stick fighting. They look silly, but they have their uses. This man knows his stuff, everything he says is solid. If you've never been in combat like this, you dont know how important it is to hit and move. I would love to take a class from OJ and I think he has a lot to teach.
Being the top student is always fun. Means you get to be the training dummy for the chokes, holds and strikes.
All you idiots speaking down, he mentions that these are advanced martial arts techniques. He talks about the most important thing being that x strike. One-two to the chest and shoulders or knees. These techniques are the same that have been taught in proven martial arts for hundreds of years. Kali especially.
The sequence at 3:23 is reminiscent of the sombrata exercises of various Kali-Escrima disciplines. Very cool.

Ugh I seriously don't know why these are banned in 90% of states. At least for civilians. Yes lets ban metal sticks but make more lethal firearms, tasers, and pepper spray legal.
sikvenum82 1 year ago
@sikvenum82 You can own a baton any State, the only restrictions are on how you carry one on your person in public, or in a vehicle. California has the most restrictive laws on expandable batons, but you can still own one in your home from my understanding. You might want to check your local laws.
OfficerJared 1 year ago
@OfficerJared You can own it but you can't use it which kind of makes buying one a moot point to then. See I live in California and even having one is pretty much illegal. Its really up to your luck which cop comes knocking on the door. Just about every states' penal code has the word billy listed as prohibited and alot of judges haves decided that includes expandable batons... However some states like Arizona do allow one to carry batons if they have a concealed gun license.
sikvenum82 1 year ago
look u know about planes and guns,
i know about psychology.
and i will tell u right now that a large proportion of gun owners are compensating for something.
usually feelings of diminished manlyness, which most often occurs in heterosexual men who are afraid that they might be gay.
so statistically the odds are on my side.
but to be fair, it was indeed a judgement call.
i will try to refrain from accusing anyone of being gay without evidence.
Whisper6911 1 year ago
@Whisper6911 I think you statement might be valid in your country, but is definitely an ethnocentric assumption. In countries like the US where law abiding civilians can own a firearm, most men have one. So statistically alone your psychology doesnt add up. You might be able to make other stereotypical assumptions of that sort in the US like the oversized pickup truck etc, but in some regions again that might be more common than not.
OfficerJared 1 year ago
@OfficerJared actually, statistics clearly show that most men, especially in america, are insecure about their penis, and more then half have had a homesexual fantasy that they feel uncomfortable with.
lol the main reason i am so sure about this is cuz it happens to refer to some rather primal aspects of male human behavior.
in any case u might ask yourself: what are you defending, and why do u feel the need to defend it?

@Whisper6911 If you were here on one of Nutn's videos, and someone else wrote in a similar comment, I would say the same thing. In my experience, calling someone a homosexual is NOT a compliment..and for the record, he is straight. I know who timothy treadwell is, I saw Warner Hartzog's documentary about him and also read a fair amount about his life and death with the grizzlies. -- Veri
nutnfancy 1 year ago
@nutnfancy well its subjective.
if u feel deeply about such a dumb joke, well this is impossible without also having strong feelings about
homosexuality.
someone who does not have such strong feelings might have responded with a joke of their own.
as for threadwell, u might take note of some interesting details:
such as the bit where he is complaining about his luck in love, that it would be easyer if he were gay,
and realise that thats his supposed GF filming on most of the shots.

@Whisper6911 Dude, we were done with this conversation a week ago...and it overstayed its welcome then. -- Veri
nutnfancy 1 year ago
@nutnfancy and btw, i seem to remember nutnfancy himself making more then 1 gay joke in his winter campout videos...
are u sure he feels as strongly about this as you do?
look if it makes u feel better: for several years i was part of a collective which commonly referred to all of its members as 'fag'
oldfags, newfags, latefags, earlyfags, camfags etc etc etc.
on more then 1 occasion i have referred to myself with several of these distinctions.
it don't ,mean nutn...

-Nutnfancy, hetero extraordinaire

banning things like batons, stunguns, pocket knives, really is stupid... anybody that watches Lockup:Raw on tv can see how to make a lethal weapon out of plastic coffee cup lid.. guess they are next... shhh.. dont tell the TSA

nutnfancy 1 year ago
@nutnfancy excuse me????
does having an oppinion u don't like = trolling?
this is my god's honest oppinion, and i don't particularly care who agrees with me.
i feel i have an equal right to express myself regardless of what my opinion happens to be.
besides, what i pointed out is a cold hard legal fact in my country.
niehter civillian NOR police are allowed to carry or even own a metal baton.
and the reason is exactly what i said it was.
Whisper6911 1 year ago
@Whisper6911 Having an opinion will NOT get you blocked here, but if you call another one of my shooters gay.... you're gone. Be respectful.. or walk away. -- Veri
nutnfancy 1 year ago
@nutnfancy if u disagree with that i suggest u take it up with the dutch justice dept.
as opposed to accusing me of trolling cuz i happen to disagree with something.
of course thats an easy way to get rid of unpopular opinions now isnt it;
just accuse them of something and take the high road, knowing u can get a large number of people to
agree with you regardless of the topic or positions.
Whisper6911 1 year ago
@nutnfancy ive been around for a while, and i don't think i deserve to be accused of trolling, as in this case it is
equal to accusing me of being a liar.
i find this especially distatefull since everything i said can be independently varified to be 100% true.
hell i barely expressed much of an opinion at all, i was mostly just stating facts about the laws in my country.
Whisper6911 1 year ago
@nutnfancy and btw, i was never the one who argued that knife vs knife fights = fantasy, that was nutfancy himself who argued that.
im simply saying that in my personal opinion the same applies to batons.
the only personal opinion i ever expressed was that it is easy to wield a baton effectively, weather u want to
disable, imobilise or kill.
and i have some authority to say this, as i have actually handled a baton on more then 1 occasion
(before the law changed)
Whisper6911 1 year ago
@nutnfancy i respect your opinions, why should u not respect mine?
why accuse me of trolling?
seriously, wtf?

Just a thought, I've spent many years fighting and training fighters. Doing holds when you're in elbow range is not a good idea. You may break their arm, but you can very easily loose your head.

Tanks for the answer, Officer Jared!
MrLoiti100 1 year ago
Great to see this on TNP. It's been a while since I did martial arts nad I make no claim to being any kind of guru. In my opinion this vid is on the money. Good basic strikes, footwork and balance, work the angles and you have a fighting change. Under pressure the fancy techniques are not used or don't work. Thanks for keeping it real OJ.

Do you recommend any brands of baton over others?
Are there special batons to practice sparring with? Maybe not as heavy or hard so you don't do any major damage to your sparring partner? It would seem like a good training tool

@crossfireracerx the brand OJ uses is the SmartLock, not sure on the practise baton (weight and feel would be different, hence the pads)

Question for the baton specialists:
How does one choose the right length between 16", 21" and 26"?
Does it have to do with "philosophy of use", or "size and weight constraints" , or skill level, or your personal size, or something else completely. I am 6'4", 205lbs if that helps at all and plan to have one in the car for self-defense only or emergency use. Only a few years of martial arts, none of those with sticks thought.
alexebox 1 year ago
@alexebox Based on the your info (your build and the planned usage), I would definitely say the 21" or 26". The 21" is definitely the most popular size, but many like the additional reach with the 26".
OfficerJared 1 year ago
@alexebox I'm by no means an expert, but i'd have the largest I can comfortably use in the car and perhaps a 16" for EDC.
