Should be "...let us DIE to make men free." That is the original version, and more powerful (at least to me) given the circumstances of the Civil War. To live for something is swell, but to die for it requires a whole lot more.
hearing this live is the most awsome experience. I was blessed to hear the Mormon Tabernacle Chior live two years ago and I still get chills when listening to this song. Thank God for the talent that He has graced the members of this chior with.
I have listened to the music of the Mormon Choir since I was a child and am now 63 years old. For those who judge the Mormons, that is up to God and no one else. Why do Americans and the people of God have to fight each other? That is what Satan loves and he is the real enemy of this world. Yes, I believe in Jesus Christ as the Savior of the whole world. It is to each person to decide that for themselves. That is true freedom. Thank you choir for all of the joy that you have brought to millions.
@Cacacos What a stupid remark. Mormons are great people -- perhaps you should take a moment to read up on all of the good Mormons do all over the world. Unlike so many Americans across this great country of ours, Mormons take care of their own. Perhaps others could learn from Mormons and instead of seeking government assistance do as the Mormons do -- work for what you receive and the Mormon Church provides you with the essentials to get back on your feet. Knowledge is power.
When I hear this song I literally feel like I can sense the march of time and god. There is something far beyond the physical that comes out every time this song is performed in a traditional manner. I heard this song live once performed by a church choir and a big old fashioned pipe organ. You literally feel your soul stirring. It always reminds me of how sacred real music like this truly is.
Changing the word "die" to "live" takes away the whole point of the piece. I imagine a soldier going into battle facing almost certain death who seeks to give meaning to his cause that he might not die in vain. The passage means that just as Christ was willing to die for our sin's, we stand willing to die for freedom. It's a powerful sentiment lost by those too timid to say "die."
@oneputtsteven ...I am every bit as opposed to war and death as you. My comment is one of sympathy for the plight of the common soldier. Altering this great work of art will not save lives. If anything, the spectre of death should serve as a reminder of the futility of war.
@danlj99 The futility of war huh? Somehow, I don't think the French, Dutch, Belgians, Philipinos, etc. thought that the conclusion of WWII was futile. There are worse things than war.
I truly love this most beautiful version of The Battle Hymn of the Republic and would dearly love to purchase my own copy of it, if that is possible. If so, and if anyone out there can help me to do so, please respond. No, I'm not a Morman, (but while stationed at Hill AFB in the late '60's got to know a number of great Mormans that have positively influenced my life forever), but I do absolutely love all that the chior does! Utmost perfection!
I love being Mormon. To everyone that thinks we are strange or a cult or bad, or worshippers of the devil. We are NOT. I am 13 and I am a member. I am a regular teen but am happy to be a Mormon knowing I am spiritually right and strong and don't have the same worries as regular teens. We are normal happy people. Thanks, I love MOTAB. Listen to it everyday.
Through all of the lies and prosecutions we face...which no other Christian church faces as we do, there is one simple truth that calms me...and that is that the truth IS. All will come to know it for what it is. No matter how much people refute our beleifs, which is a God given right called free agency, I love the scripture in the Bible...and every knee shall bown, and every tongue confess that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God. and all will learn the truth.
i read from the torah and this music and the principles behind it are splendid. religion is transgressive and know no bounds and should on principle alone bring people together.
Mormonism is a false religion but they sure can sing great!

@danlj99 To many have have already died, for our freedoms. We need those who would live to make peace.

@danlj99 I disagree. The Battle Hymn glorifies the greater truth - eternity and the righteousness of God! Forever and Ever Amen!

Maybe this tune was written to motivate US troops in the civil war. Today, it's not just an American tune I think, it's the anthem of the free world.
