I posted the video of Anonymous talking about the Nation Defense Authorization Act on Jim's official Facebook Page. And I quoted him in the comment underneath:
"Too many people have paid for this contract in blood" - Jim Carrey.
God, I wish Jim Carrey's career looked more like this. He's had a few excellent films, but overall - clearly - he could have been a fantastic actor of comedy AND drama.
How come a canadian gets it more then we americans do? "It's far easier to fight for principles than to live up to them." You say you fight for the safety of this country and its country men? how about you fight for the constitution and care less about me!!!
I remember watching this movie for the fist time. It was a happy family movie. Kinda goofy here and there. Got a little serious. Then BAMN!!! This scene blew me away! And by a Canadian actor reminding us Americans what we should stand for and fight for... Great movie... :-)
Communism was meant to be introduced by Marx as an idea amerliorating Democracy. Marx would have never wanted to see his ideology being manipulated by demogogues and dictators. Sad reality is that Communism will never be achieved in the history of mankind unless there is some radical change in the mentality of human beings. Marx expected his system to function, because he truely believed people can be virtuous. Unfortunate for him, majority of people are greedy, jealous, and malicious.
This is what i have been saying for years and most people ignore me, yes im a libertarian and i love the free market but if you are going to be blaming marx for any wrong doing by dictators then you obviously havnt read a damn word in his book. He called for a democratic communistic society, one which the works as a collective did what was right for the people, with no real leader. And when you try to correct someone about that fact they ignore you because they dont want to hear it.
Well, I have read Marx and Engels couple of times, and if I have the time, I would read it again. Marx's hope for a functioning communistic society is simply amazing at the same time disillusioning, because realistically, it just doesn't seem plausible with the current mental capacity of humans, if at all even possible in the future of mankind.
Yeah I do have hope for man kind, I believe that it takes a tragedy to change the culture. It takes some great resolve in order for people to finally say this just isnt right any more. Im an individualist so the idea of collective scares me a bit, the mayans, the aztecans, native americans all about the collective all thrived at some point but all crumbled in the end. It is that of the individual that matters the most. But thats my opinion.
The current mental threshold of majority of mankind does not allow for behaviors "we" as a collective whole perceive as being "virtuous." Our society is now so conventionalized, majority of people have to be egoistic in order to survive, and only a select few have the "privilege" to exhibit altruism. Worse, that altruism is at most a phony representation of a true contribution to society, since it can only be exhibited by wealth.
Just to put some facts in their proper place, Senator Joe Macarthy had very little to do with the Hollywood witch hunts. It was done by the House Un-American Activities Commission. Macarthy was in the Senate, not the House. The two were related by common belief, but no legal connections.
The irony of the blacklist is that supposedly this witchhunt was designed to fight communism because communism represented totalitarianism and a loss of freedom so to avoid communism, America became fascist and didn't see how that was just as bad. Everything the government told people to hate about communism they became anyway.
although I will say they conveniently leave out the fact that at this point african americans had no voice in the united states, kind of derails the whole scene if you think about that fact
@cdevinefandm It doesn't derail anything. This movie wasn't about black americans and their voice. Why should they have brought it up. It was off the topic. And aside from that, it's not only important for black americans to raise their voice. It's important for all Americans to put down the remote control, take their head out of their ass, and exercise their 1st amendment rights, before they lose it!!!
just something to know, If the people McCarthy accused at that time, like the Hollywood 10, were innocent, then why did they always go wrapping themselves in the 1st amendment and not give answer? If they were innocent they would have just answered and then give their speaches. most of the people accused were communists/ if you want proof, read the vernona transcripts
@SuperStinsley They have the right to be communists. They have the right to have communist beliefs and to peaceably assemble. Same for any Racial seperationist group or any religious group or any other political group. It doesn't matter if they were communists or not., McCarthy broke the consitution when he went on his campaign.
@SuperStinsley they wrapped themselves in the 1st amendment because that's the one it says they did nothing illegal and it's true, as is shown in this scene, it doesn't matter if those poeple were or not, accusing someone of being communist, and taking legal action into it, it's anticonstitutional, they could had been redder than red and it would still be ok according to u.s.a. constitution, i'm not even from u.s.a. and i understand this
@haogar5 not necessarily true. freedom of speech does exist, but at the same time you can prosecute someone criminally for a belief of espionage or other issues dealing with national security/treason. If you have evidence/reason to believe this is occurring, the first amendment doesn't come into play. the other thing to remember is that freedom of speech only goes so far, there are civil tort laws in place that limits what a person can say in certain regards
@cdevinefandm i agree, treason it's a big deal, but they were not being hunted for being spies or traitors, they were being hunted for being communists, freedom of speech goes so far, but they did not went further
@cdevinefandm True about espionage, and national security, but there is a line that must be drawn. There's a big difference between believing in communism verses exchanging nat. security information with 1950's Communist Russia.
@BlackHallow55 Sooner or later Mr. Carrey will find a film that will win him an Oscar, He is just not taken so seriously by his peers, Also see Man in the Moon a Great performance. Ditto for Tom Cruise Ignored for Last Samurai while his co-star recieved a nomination.
oh. my. god. I have this thing about well written, well delivered speeches, and this one, by far, since the moment I first heard it, always has and always will remain one of the absolute best! phenomanal preformance by Jim Carey, and even though he's a quintessential funny man, I think he should do stuff like this more often.
Only the U.S. could celebrate the little hero like this while they were still kicking him down. The U.S. learned NOTHING from the McCarthy era. People of genuine good will are still pilloried by the establishment in that country. The U.S. just doesn't want to hear what is wrong with it and will never learn in time.
Just brilliant! I felt a chill up my spine when he says "Too many people have paid in blood this contract" and shows the gold medal of honour. Just brilliant.
I've always been a fan of good law movies where the little guy beats the government, like in Amistad and A Time to Kill. But this is definitely one of the best scenes. It's one of Hollywood's greatest, and the best Jim Carey could ever do.
I'm normally not a fan of his, he's good for a laugh but not much substance. But this is amazing. You can see how terrified he is when his hand's shaking and he wipes the sweat off his brow and you can even hear it in his voice. He's fantastic.
I felt the same way reedeema about Peter not speaking louder...but, I feel that would have not kept with his ideals. It wasn't until he was chewed out by Adele that he grew his cajones...PS. I love the voice over of Matt Damon doing Luke...great letter/speech in its own right!

stop using crack Kreider100, "we have and step by step granted a more purer form of freedom this society. ". That statement is the polar opposite of what is happening.
Amen. And when you put it to metal as such, it will always be the beacon for freedom, justice and opportunity, that so many outside our borders seek, but so few ever find.
In short, Communism should NEVER be an ideology practiced by the system of government. It should be an optional principle that only the people can practice. After all, "humanity" and "moral values" contain communist ideals, such as equality, sharing, etc. The term "communism" has been stigmatised too much by the media and the systems of government who had exploited it. We are just following the good points of communism, while throwing away the bad points. Likewise, we can do so for other ideals.
The Soviet government was never communist. It used Marxist ideals to cover up it's true nature. Under Stalin, Soviet Russia was a totalitarian dictatorship. Soviet Russia perverted Marx's idealism Because instead of creating a classless society, it created a 2 class society. The ones with power and the ones without.
Soviet Russia was never communist. It was totalitarian and authoritarian. Never communist.
And that's how communism had mutated into something that is perceived as evil.
Anyway, as I had said before, there shud never have a communist government.Because if there was a communist government, there would be two heirarchies like you had said; people with power and people who don't. The rule of Mao Zhedong was already horrible as it is.
One flaw about communism is that it does not involve a government.Without a government, there may be no direction, no evolution. It gets exploited easily.
No it wasn't made by poor people for poor people. it was created by a man named Marx with free time as a result of capitalism and pushed by every thug and vicious dictator since.
The problem with COmmunism is the size and scope of the state, a state so large and dominant of economic affairs will also control civil ones, it is inevitable.
No it was by an elitest liberal and still propagated by the same group with the addition of fascist thugs. The poor always do worse under Communism than they previously did.
Either way, Communism is still fucked up and was a failed idea anyway. It had the right thought going for it, but was heavily flawed and was heavily exploited.
You know this comment board makes me sad. I mean it works into the government's hands. Just read the Bill of Rights. Half conservative, half liberal. The government uses it to pit us against each other.
We need to rise up and recognize the real enemy. It isn't your neighbors or people voicing their opinions. It is those in charge. Those who continue to manipulate us.
We the people have forgotten who is in charge. It was supposed to be us. Instead it is them. That is what makes this so sad.
I always thought the Bill of Rights was originally made to satisfy the needs of both the liberals and the conservatives? In the end the bill is just a guideline. Whether or not you wish to follow it word by word or pick the ones that suits you is up to the individual.
They tried to Silence Peter because they interpret it as communism. They portrayed communism as an evil ideal. But what is communism? It's just an ideal, and was never made for evil in the first place. It was manipulated too.
Perunatic, I think his speech was more about protecting and standing up for the 1st amendment not "Hey everybody go out become a Communist because it's great!!" You sound like McCarthy. If you don't believe in what I believe than your a Communist period! You also sound like you want to create a hit/black list of your own to those who do not think like you! Also, phddddd I agree protest can be a good thing!
Great Speech!! Sometimes we need to be reminded what freedoms and liberties our military troops are fighting for and not some politicians version of them so they can get re-elected.
The liberty to defend an ideology that doesn't believe in liberty? People get the governments they deserve. I hope you enjoy the tyranny you are paving the way for. Liberty isn't always about accepting other values, sometimes it's about taking a stand against negative values.

Very moving fantasy speech. Records released after the collapse of Communism in the USSR, however, establish without a shadow of a doubt that Communist agents were both prolific and active at this point in American history. Communism is one of the most freedom crushingly oppressive system known to man. That's what your "big hearted" America was intended to be "open" to.
You have a right to "be" a Communist, but the American public have a right to know that you are a Communist, if you are pushing a Communist agenda whilst pretending not to be one.
Have a great day anyway JB!
Movies, BTW, have more influence over public opinion than either the media or academia. I'd say you'd have to be pretty naive not to understand that.
Where does it stop? To Know that you're gay, know that you're a communist, know that you're a Muslim, know that you're an accoutant, that you don't believe in god, but believe in gold, and look up old ladies' dresses. Your remark is ridiculous. The American public doesn't have the right to know anything other than your right to believe in whatever you choose, to act in accordance to what you believe. Laws exist not to identify character, but crimes. There is no crime in being a communist.
So you don't have a right to know about people are covertly trying to implement a system of government that will deprive you of your rights? Rights belong to people who have the courage to stand up and defend them.
I hate to inform you perunatic but we currently live in a country that daily denies us of our rights. I welcome protest that might improve this condition. You've not witnessed what begins as common sense that soon grows into something quite different. Might I suggest you look into Idi Amin; Hitler; and others who began under the best of cirucumstance. But I suppose you would call Kent State the "right" of the National Guard to kill students. A few of them might have been communists!
Is tolerating intolerance, tolerance? Communism is undemocratic, you cannot support the rights of communists and be a lover of freedom anymore than you can call yourself a fire fighter and refuse to fight fires.
Well then it's a good thing we don't live in a Democratic country under a Democracy....but rather under a Republic...you know, for which it stands? Lmao. Hey, if a Democracy is in some way abridging the freedom of someone to choose to believe in another theocracy, then how can it possibly be the theocracy of freedom and peace? It's kind of...hypocritical....dontcha think? You kind of missed the entire point of this scene.

stop using crack Kreider100, "we have and step by step granted a more purer form of freedom this society. ". That statement is the polar opposite of what is happening.

The communist witch hunts was a darkside in American history. A lot of talented people had there lives destroyed.
I prey this never happens again in this great country. America has it's fault but it's still the greatest country in the world!

You're 98 % correct... Pfisiar good job

No it wasn't made by poor people for poor people. it was created by a man named Marx with free time as a result of capitalism and pushed by every thug and vicious dictator since.
The problem with COmmunism is the size and scope of the state, a state so large and dominant of economic affairs will also control civil ones, it is inevitable.
aweiss 2 years ago
It was made by Marx who interviewed the poor people who were the workers who were being expoited.
TerrawindX2 2 years ago
No it was by an elitest liberal and still propagated by the same group with the addition of fascist thugs. The poor always do worse under Communism than they previously did.
aweiss 2 years ago
Either way, Communism is still fucked up and was a failed idea anyway. It had the right thought going for it, but was heavily flawed and was heavily exploited.

AMAZING SPEECH. AMAZING MOVIE. AMAZING ACTOR. I think its great how Jim Carey can do both crazy funny and serious acting.

That is what makes this so sad.
sastath 3 years ago

049765 3 years ago
The liberty to defend an ideology that doesn't believe in liberty? People get the governments they deserve. I hope you enjoy the tyranny you are paving the way for. Liberty isn't always about accepting other values, sometimes it's about taking a stand against negative values.

Easily one of my favorite movie speeches of all time. (And the movie itself is pretty darn good too!)

Very moving fantasy speech. Records released after the collapse of Communism in the USSR, however, establish without a shadow of a doubt that Communist agents were both prolific and active at this point in American history. Communism is one of the most freedom crushingly oppressive system known to man. That's what your "big hearted" America was intended to be "open" to.
perunatic 3 years ago
dude...it's a movie...not real life...that being the case, i do have the right to be a communist in this country...so get over it
jimbean437 3 years ago

There is no crime in being a communist.
phddddd 3 years ago
So you don't have a right to know about people are covertly trying to implement a system of government that will deprive you of your rights? Rights belong to people who have the courage to stand up and defend them.
perunatic 3 years ago
I hate to inform you perunatic but we currently live in a country that daily denies us of our rights. I welcome protest that might improve this condition. You've not witnessed what begins as common sense that soon grows into something quite different. Might I suggest you look into Idi Amin; Hitler; and others who began under the best of cirucumstance. But I suppose you would call Kent State the "right" of the National Guard to kill students. A few of them might have been communists!

perunatic I don't understand your logic ?!
049765 3 years ago
Is tolerating intolerance, tolerance? Communism is undemocratic, you cannot support the rights of communists and be a lover of freedom anymore than you can call yourself a fire fighter and refuse to fight fires.
perunatic 3 years ago
Well then it's a good thing we don't live in a Democratic country under a Democracy....but rather under a Republic...you know, for which it stands? Lmao. Hey, if a Democracy is in some way abridging the freedom of someone to choose to believe in another theocracy, then how can it possibly be the theocracy of freedom and peace? It's kind of...hypocritical....dontcha think? You kind of missed the entire point of this scene.
