The bass response is better when in a cabinet as there are two bass ports in the back. You definitely do not want to obstruct the front of the unit as it will muffle the highs.
In my opinion the b&w Zeppelin is the best iPod dock on the market. limitations: bass goes low but can get muddy when played loud. The midrange and treble are tight and precise. If you like other b&w speakers you will like the Zeppelin as well. If you expect true audiophile performance, or nightclub volume from the Zeppelin dock you may be a little disappointed. If you are lookmultiple multiple-function dock that sounds better than any dock on the market the b&w Zeppelin is the one to choose
When you hear some music with the zeppelin, is it able to bring a massive/hard/low bass while having brilliant highs and balanced mids? Does it sound really warm - B&W typical?! I love B&W sound, so wonderful..
