When they are actually supposed to hold, or flush the animal so the hunter can humanely dispatch it. Also letting it attack puts it at risk for disease.

My dog got into a scrap with a groundhog recently - I own a Rottweiler. Bigger dog but I was just as horrified watching it as when I watched this video because I was afraid of my babygirl getting hurt by this animal. It came into my fenced in yard, and she got to it before I could grab her. She had a scratch on her muzzle, groundhog is dead.
But I don't think I could have videotaped the encounter, either - it scared the shit outta me.
I had a dog like try and attack my rottie/shepherd. It was nuts! This dog lached onto mine and tried ripping a chunch out of his neck, I had to run up and grab the dog by the scruff to yank it off mine. It was then trying to attack me when I grabbed it. I brought it back to the house where it lived and ripped a fucking chunk out of the owner! He was lucky my dog was only a pup at the time. It's just amazing what this breed of dog can get into lol. Beautiful little ball of energy they are :)

Things I should preface, I drop the camera when the dog whines because I thought my dog was being hurt, but I gave him a bath and he didn't have a single scratch on him. Another thing, the collar he has on is an electric collar and that edge of the yard is just about as far as he can go, which is why the dog keeps trying to drag him back. He has since killed that groundhog, and several others.

Bigger dog but I was just as horrified watching it as when I watched this video because I was afraid of my babygirl getting hurt by this animal. It came into my fenced in yard, and she got to it before I could grab her. She had a scratch on her muzzle, groundhog is dead.
But I don't think I could have videotaped the encounter, either - it scared the shit outta me.

I had a dog like try and attack my rottie/shepherd. It was nuts! This dog lached onto mine and tried ripping a chunch out of his neck, I had to run up and grab the dog by the scruff to yank it off mine. It was then trying to attack me when I grabbed it. I brought it back to the house where it lived and ripped a fucking chunk out of the owner! He was lucky my dog was only a pup at the time. It's just amazing what this breed of dog can get into lol. Beautiful little ball of energy they are :)

Groundhogs are over populated. A lot of states have open season with no bag limit. Animals can't control themselves.
FYI Terriers like the Jack Russell and Patterdale have been doing this work for hundreds of years. Not the exact breeds, but similar.

Things I should preface, I drop the camera when the dog whines because I thought my dog was being hurt, but I gave him a bath and he didn't have a single scratch on him. Another thing, the collar he has on is an electric collar and that edge of the yard is just about as far as he can go, which is why the dog keeps trying to drag him back. He has since killed that groundhog, and several others.
