The hard part: killing off the K/J and the Q's. The P's and L's, N's and M's fall quickly. It takes me a Galleon and a fleet of fighters. Note: I'm an action kind of guy, and I WILL fly the Galleon super close to the Xenon J/K and watch the fire exchange. Spectacular.

when you attack sectors in this game...does it mean you can wipe out that enemy completly, at least from that system?

for a while, for the xenon if you wipe them out of a sector, theyll respawn n diff sectors and be more concentrated and some wont come back in that sector, but if you invade another after that they will return

so...overall...is it possible to put enough presence from a sector to wipe out any major stronghold of that particular group?

and i mean, including main races like argon...

in short...can i conquer the universe?

yes, for any major races however you will have trouble in that they will respawn quite frequently but you can deploy enough force to counter that actively.

i suggest having enough fleet to deploy 4-5 destroyers per sector before you try though, and stay away from xenon sectors and a few pirate ones
