Absolutely wonderful rendition! Who would have thought a simple traditional tune such as 'Shady Grove' could be reconstructed and interpreted with such imagination? (Having a genius such as Tony Rice take the lead, helps of course.)
Three top-class musicians at the very peak of their powers. Brilliant Bluegrass at its best.
Awesome, Rowan and Rice are my kind of guys, they live the life and enjoy it. What better band than two beautiful ladies that really know how to play. The sound engineer must be a little tone deaf around 6.2Khz though, ouch!
What makes these musicians, and the song, so great is that they listen intently to everything that's going on around them, not just their own playing. The backup they're contributing interwines itself in and around the lead musician's licks This is especially true of Bryn's bass playing. Excellent bluegrass!
Just moved to Santa Fe NM. Going to Santa Fe University of Art and Design as a contemporary music major. I've been listening to these guys for years, my parents raised me on this. Low and behold, Sharon Gilchrist happens to be my mandolin teacher. She is by far one of the nicest most humble players I've met. Not to mention she rips it up.
Man.......I never enjoyed watching UTUBE so much lately.........Those are two fine lookin women there.........and really great musicians as well to boot........then again playin with Tony ain't nothin to sneeze at either!!
I watch this over and over. What an act! They're all fabulous musicians and put so much extra into it. And I have NEVER seen anyone play that upright bass the way Bryn Davies does. Too bad no longer play as a group.
@CarlosMacMartin "Shady Grove" is derived from an old English folk ballad called "Mattie Groves", which has the same melody but very different lyrics. Fairport Convention used to do an electric version of it.
ScooterNerd: Yes, talk IS cheap. But, that is what this part of the website is about. Ask questions, or, answer questions, & say what You think, ( No offense meant ). We (might) share the same love for Bluegrass ! But, there aren't many women like Bryn in Bluegrass. So, 'Get Over' the comments. I LOVE THIS MUSIC !
Lordie, who is that bass player? What a magnificent looking woman! The word "sultry" has a new face! Thank God..... she is gonna haunt my dreams for a while.
Check her out in Rowan & Rice's " Rain & Snow ". It shows much more of her & she sings like a "Sultry Angel". Also check out her Myspace ! IF, you think you can handle it.
The guitar was phenomenal, but the mandolin was kinda disappointing. I personally could have done a better job at the mando part. Overall, I have to say everyone showed a lot of talent, but Tony Rice beats all.
okay, I will post something up soon. I will send you a link when I do. It is hard to make sure the quality of the vid and sound remains good with the equipment I have... but I shall post it up soon.
BTW thanks for not automatically assuming I can't do it, and actually giving me a chance to represent myself. :D Much appreciated.
hehe, okay guys I will record something with my brother tonight. Sorry for the delay, just graduating from high school and stuff like that XD (this kind of slipped my mind)
I am truly sorry to keep you waiting, I will have it up "soon" ;)
The disappointing thing to me is your comment. People like you always have to make it a contest and it isn't about who is the best or worst. It's about the love of the music. If you ever learn that then your music enjoyment will be so much more enjoyable. I say this because I know several musicians like you who are confused. Save your competing attitude for sports. Acquire a more suitable attitude for the love of music, and I highly doubt you could have done better at the "Mando" part. LOL.
Hey, total respect intended. If at a minute and seven seconds, when they kick it up a notch, between the grove of the music, the way she is shaking her hips, and the look on her face when she looks up at the crowd, if that doesn't get your man juices flowing, your dead! Fall over!
@muzaklover78 As far as the bass player is concerned thats Bryn Davies and shes a MONSTER on the bass. She also playes electric bass guitar but she kills an upright. Shes also one of the most indemand upright players out there and spends a lot of her time in the studio when shes not on the road.
I never had any large respect for good spelling. That is my feeling yet. Before the spelling-book came with its arbitrary forms, men unconsciously revealed shades of their characters and also added enlightening shades of expression to what they wrote by their spelling, and so it is possible that the spelling-book has been a doubtful benevolence to us.

It is BASS. Not base. It is the difference between lightning and lightning bug----Mark Twain.

If I remember right Mark Twain had some derisive comments about good spellers. Ill try and find them.

I really like the way Tony plays a melody, particularly here. His improv solo is great, too, but it's his opening break that grabs my ear and rythmic intuition. Tony has a unique way of stripping away all superfluous or distracting elements from the music as well as the guitar itself, bringing out the essense of both and making it available to the listener.
