Tan tui originated with the Hui, or Muslim, nationality in China...specifically with a Hui fighter called Chamir in the Ming Dynasty. It was later adapted by many different kung fu schools. (See the book "Ten Routine Spring Leg" by Ma Zhenbang)

The original Tan Tui is called Longtantui (Longtan foot play). According to legend Tan Tui came from the Longtan Monastery in the Shandong Province, therefore using the name of Shaolin Monastery.
