Once upon time, things were swell, when you were beside me, then you walked up my door, now you want me back, sorry sweet-heart, your just like a old song i dont sing anymore.
It's in the history books that some Natives from Big Bears band from Alta left some of thier people in this part of the either north or south Dakota country, years ago. You sound so cree.
the big dude..is kenny merrick hr..and to his right..is his little brother tyson, and they are from Spirit Lake Sioux Tribe in North Dakota..and the rest....i have no clue.
"Once upon time, things were swell, when you were beside me, then you walked up my door, now you want me back, sorry sweet-heart, your just like a old song i dont sing anymore."
I may not be a native american, but I am damn sure a native and a small minority in my own part of the world, and we dont sing our own songs in english even for tourists so much we respect our ancestors herritage.
Why not? I dont think it is bad, but just wondering why not their native language, if this continue soon native american languages will become like latin in Europe, just an cermnonial language for the few, not a common language you use in daily life.
Considering we're from tribes all over the place with different languages and you want to tell us how to make music, what language would satisfy you and get your nose outta the air?
I am not telling you how to make music, I am just asking the question, why not your own language, why cant people from one place listen to the native tongue of the people from the other place and viceversa, by the way if you dont want "noosing" or any question at all why post it on youtube...
It's not noosing....I said your nose was in the air...
This is meant to be enjoyed for what it is. It's not sacred music and if you truly don't understand it you have no grounds to make negative comments. Your first post was pretty arrogant and wreaks of ignorance about what you're seeing and now you're backpeddling. We make plenty of music in our respective languages...this song is meant to be sung in English. It's truly not your place to decide what language we make our music in.
So back to my question....which language out of the many represented by our singers SHOULD we be making our music in to satisfy you? Should we jump up and translate the song because you don't understand what you're seeing and want to belittle it with your first comment?? We all represent many languages, but we all speak English in modern times to communicate with each other. Making social music in English is a reflection of that. This song is a reflection of that.
I am not backpedding for a second. This is a odd experience, I am actually trying to encourage use of native american languages, but instead just receive negative comments pointing out that. It is not to satisify me, if you want to loose your native languages from your daily life thats your loss, and when language dissappear, culture will dissappear and your no different from your neighbours and the newcomers.
Do you really think you're ENCOURAGING ANYTHING by first belittling it?? That's my point. You're looking down on this song because it has English lyrics and isn't "Native American" enough for you. Yet, you won't acknowledge that we make songs in our respective languages, but ROUND DANCE SONGS (like this video) are sometimes made in English and have been for a long time. This is social music. We use English sometimes so anyone (including you) can understand it. Enjoy it, it's good humor.
You are far off, I am not looking down at this song, simply with native american lyrics it would be even better. Anyway it seems you are very touchy about this native american language stuff, sensitive point?
I keep referring to your first comment. "Why they sing in english, isnt their native language good enough anymore? I would never sing any of my peoples song in any other language." From my point of view it's very condescending. You assume we don't like our languages. Imagine it the other way around and I as an American made a comment about something in Norway I knew nothing about with your words. There is nothing remotely "encouraging" in that.
But it's ok. I think you're just not getting it. There's other vids online you can find that would be what you're looking for. Have a look around. Enjoy them for what they are. It's all good either way.
I think this is a cultural missunderstanding, when I say "isnt their native language good enough anymore?" you take it as an insult from your cultural context and experience, in my cultural context it is an fact until recently.
My understanding to using English words into songs is that there are some people that dont know how to speak in their native launage. Nor all native launages are the same. I wright round dances, and I use english in most of them, I only wrote one with ONE word in my native launage. The main purpose of these round dances (correct me if im wrong) is entertainment. Not to show off our culture or spirital events.
Sure in normal conversations, but have you ever seen a Sami yoiker perform traditional songs in english or any other language just because you dont understand the language? Music is not the same as talking, of course not! Instead make some copies to them of the lyrics in english.
Actually round dances are not for "Entertainment", these are sacred ceremonies that honor those that have gone on before us and to celebrate life and feel good, Entertainment in definately NOT the main purpose of these round dances
Beautiful song, BRC and Mysic river both sound awesome, it makes me happy to see our native people singing. There should be no remarks about whos better, never have us natives been like this. We need to keep on singing and be one as a people. We are one people and need to show respect as our elders have shown us. Payapatches- Kumeyaay Nation from the south.
