mitchell was the best south africa had, not as flash as thobela maybe , but totally dedicated, always in range, great defence, perfect guy to learn from as a boxer
@DrShittyBottomHammer Don't know if Brian Mitchell is the best fighter ever from South Africa, but his dedication, defense, range (as well as his overall skill and fitness) are attributes that can never be questioned.
@ChampCarforlife I would place Mitchell above Bungu. Remember because of the racist, fascist Apartheid regime, Mitchell had to defend his belt around the world and a lot of times, defend his belt in another guy's home country while Bungo defended his belt largely on home turf. Also, when Mitchell stepped up in the level of competition against Lopez, Mitchell arguably bet Tony Lopez twice. When Bungu stepped up against Naseem Hamed, Bungu KO'd and the fight wasn't even close.
Yes I guess Mitchell was a tab bit better than Bungu needed a signature victory and he lost to Naseem Hamed although Bungu came back out of retirement to beat Takalani Ndlovu for the IBO title.
@ChampCarforlife No offense to Ndlovu, but I don't count that as a that much of a significant win. Ndlovu not even the level of fighter that Kennedy McKinney was, who Bungu beat twice. Ndlovu also not the level of fighter that Tony Lopez was.
@Wamz1978 I also have Mitchell vs. Salvatore Rottiglieri (2/11/89) uploaded as well. Mitchell one of the best Jr. Lightweight fighters of all time as well as one of the best fighters of the 1980's.
Mitchell had great technique, a concrete chin, air-tight defense, and laser-like reflexes. He rarely missed. Plus he was comfortable fighting any type of style of fighter. On top of it, he never choked under pressure. NEVER.
@tw69hands2 He is an excellent example of essentially ordinary talent yielding extra-ordinary results because of hard work and a dedication to textbook principles... Mitchell was simply very fucking good indeed
To me, Mitchell had great timing and aim. As a former boxer myself, I can tell you that those are gifts. You can improve on them but you can't really teach em...
Thanks for the upload. I remeber having thos card on vhs. My collection got stolen back in 92. I also had the first fight which was a forgotten classic like this one.

I would put Mitchell next to Vuyani Bungu. Bugnu had 13 title defensive which is equally impressive.

@DrShittyBottomHammer Brian Mitchell was an outstanding all around fighter.

Mitchell was a good fighter... Not great at any one thing, but good at many things, the whole greater than the sum and all of that

@Wamz1978 Completely agree. Great analysis of Brian Mitchell. Couldn't have put it better myself.
