  • Actually guys.. The writer fell madly in love with a woman in real life, but she thought he was crazy... He has dream about it... And writes about the dream in music form... She figured out the song was about her... And fell madly in love with him... Turns out she they spoke different languages... But they got married and lived happily ever after...

  • Mozart got jeolous and disliked this 15 times

  • best composer ever

  • This should be the second surprise symphony

  • Who is the conductor and orchestra on the recording?

  • @Cmontermini

    Charles Munch Boston Symphony 1959

  • playing timpani on this fucking rocks

  • @NocBrasty totally agrreed. best part on timpani ever.

  • Awesome after 64 times

  • Recently heard a performance of Symphonie Fantastique by Orchestre de Paris cond. Paavo Jarvi. There is something very special about the brass section in this orchestra which is just perfect for Berlioz, maybe it's the acoustics of the Salle Pleyel, don't know but it's the best!!

  • Se Berlioz fosse nato in questo secolo sarebbe stato un metallaro :D

  • This all premiered at the Paris Conservatoire on December 5, 1830.

  • Love this!

  • Played it in marching band!!!

  • Beethoven disliked this 14 times... =P

    Lol, freakin' great stuff!

  • I LOVE the sudden brass entrance.

  • I enjoy the feeling of depression, hopelessness, and darkness, especially in the 4th movement. You can feel the fear of the looming and inevitable execution he is about to receive.

    (Hear the head roll...)

  • @TheBlackshirtHusker Those little pizzicato notes are so expressive if you know what they mean.

  • playing this song in youth symphony

  • I need Opium^^

  • I don;t suppose you would know who performed this recording would you?

  • Fuck this piece is hard it goes so fast my band Is playing it but it's a very good piece

  • @DeaThreeper5 I think its a pretty easy song, we are playingit for concert contests... What do you play....?

  • @DeaThreeper5 Check out the song bayou breakdown... Now thats a fast painful song

  • Man, I really wanted to see fierce fights between different composer fans like: "Berlioz is only a copycat!!! LISTEN TO THAT SOLO CLARINET PART! That's a direct copy from Verdi! Berlioz sold his own style and bacame such a fake to GET MONEY! idk how you ever can like him?!!?!"

  • @Argasis he had to get money for his drugs man.

  • @PapaBone69 Even less cool, man. Where's the artistical pride, dude?

  • As a bassoon player I can safely say this is one of the craziest pieces I have ever played, but it's brilliant if you can get it right :)

  • i play this song in my youtn symphony.

  • @GreatAvenue El Paso Youth Symphony?

  • Thumbs up if you did this for your leaving cert in 2010 xD

  • 13 people have another taste of music and that's ok.

  • I have to learn this on double bass for concert band at my high school. this'll be the first song i learn. insane

  • I play the solo clarinet part in this piece in my school's band. It's always going to be my favorite piece of music!<3

  • I'm just now learning how to play bass and alto clarinet (in my third year of college, no less) and my first experience playing bass was on this piece. HOLY CRAP I'M HOOKED.

  • I'm surprised this march isn't used more often as a processional at weddings

  • @scarecrowpa LAWL. Just about the same as using Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust." Like my dad did when he and my mom entered the reception. Oye.

  • @scarecrowpa do you know what this song is about? ._.

  • @musicianskey I don't think my comment would have been funny without knowing what the song is about

  • @scarecrowpa thats hilarious! :)

  • @scarecrowpa me too

  • @scarecrowpa it just doesn't spell "doom" as is required for weddings.

  • @scarecrowpa

LOL! :-) great idea (very sarcastic, and very realistic)!

  • @scarecrowpa haha you sir have either a sick sense of humor or are not knowledgeable. lmao. Berlioz composed this piece to be as a story. it consists of 5 Movements and this is the third or forth. Basically the entire symphony is about this guy who falls in love with a girl. guy asks girl to marry. girl says no. guy kills her. this is the part after he gets caught. This is wats happening from 4:00-4:20. (4:00) Audience cheer. 4:06 music stops as memory of girl pops in head. (theres more, no room)

  • @lostinspace94 it's the sick sense of humor, or maybe an overactive sense of irony. I do know the story, that's what I though made my original statement funny. Now I find it hilarious that some fans of classical/orchestral music are so literal-minded and possibly humor-inhibited. Knowing the story should make the joke apparent, others who don't know the story would probably think "yeah, that might make a good wedding processional ..."

  • @scarecrowpa continued: 4:12 released guillotine. if you listen very closely, you can hear the bass line at 4:13-4:14, thats his head falling into the basket and after that theres more "audience" cheers. lol. the next act is him in hell. its pretty sweet. lmao.

  • @lostinspace94

    I knew the story differently.

I was told the guy was Berlioz himself. The first movement is kind of a description of Berlioz's love. The next two movements are like a dream in which Berlioz is with the woman he loves, and everything is perfect. Then, on the fourth movement, she is found guilty of a crime and executed (supposedly Berlioz tried to commit suicide while making this movement). On the last movement, he revives her, but she comes back as a witch.

  • @lostinspace94

I was told this version of the story by my father, who knows a lot about classical music. I mean, he could be wrong, but this is the version I know and it sounds right.

  • @MrAtlantos hahahaha i mean, there are probably hundreds of different versions of the same story since since its such an old piece, theres no use in trying to debate which one is more likely. lmao. but i heard my story from my music theory teacher whos whole life has been dedicated to stuff like this. lol.

  • @lostinspace94

I wasn't trying to start a debate. I was expressing the version I knew.

    LOL

    But, whatever.

  • @scarecrowpa ok. im glad it was the first... cuz at first i thot you were someone who didnt know anything about music stating something that was completely wrong... but you are most definitely correct, the story makes your comment hilarious. and i hope i didnt make you mad by posting the story in my comment, is was as much to explain to everyone else why your comment makes sense as it was to "correct" you... so i apologize if i offended you. lol.

  • @scarecrowpa I think I will use it ;)

  • FUCK YOU AND YOUR JUSTIN COMMENTS.

  • Ha, all these soprano clarinets saying how they love the clarinet part. Everybody knows BASS clarinet is the best xD

  • We have to learn this for our school performance.

  • Well said. I was mad when the first clarinetest played that part and not me. Oh well. I guess I just have to work harder to be first chair. I love this song!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The Clarinet in 4:05 is pure awesomeness!!!!!

  • This was sent to my 15 year old son who's on his way to the gallows. Ok, he's taking his World History II final tomorrow. We should all walk around with our own theme music. Good luck, son!

  • Marche au supplice

Pour Mars voir Holst (l'autre Gustav)

  • Comment removed

  • Trombones ... 2:48 to 3:20 ... epicness.

  • Yes, the bassoon is awesome!!!!!! I played this in Chamber music workshop and one bassoonist could play it perfectly. It sounded amazing. I also like the one clarinet solo. It's basically the only time you can hear the clarinet and it's beautiful.

  • I like how you hear the pizzicato to represent the head rolling.

  • @DakkstarDarkling i thought this was about a hanging, not the guillotine?

  • @joerobot32

Hmm, maybe I was imagining things then..

  • who would dislike this? 12 crazy people i suppose.

  • Awesome!

  • The bassoon is the best part of this piece.

  • @jjmsmusic besides the bass. Or maybe the bass is a close second. They have to do more than push buttons, it's not easy, I know from experience.

  • I think the reason it is so, ahh...joyous is because since this is meant to be his execution for killing his "beloved," the people watching the execution are happy because of the justice served. Perhaps it is the happiness of the people watching his execution that he is demonstrating in this?

  • @fury098 I'll bring the spare guillotine blades! Or a viola - which kills faster? JK

  • @fury098 I'll bring the spare guillotine blades!

  • I never knew getting hanged was such a happy affair.

  • @theanguished1 You have no idea.....I get hung every Friday. Keeps my arms cut.

  • who the hell would dislike this?

  • @DjAdrian69 Someone who's going to be hanged tomorrow :)

  • We played this at band camp and I had the clarinet solo at 4:05 <3

  • im playing this in band

  • @AsianGirl357 srsly?

  • I heard about Berlioz by reading The Master and Margarita 8-)

  • 9 uncultured swines.

  • D G D B C B ==> massive chord: Epic!

  • this song makes me want to just whip out my shlong and twirl it like a lasso!!! wooo berlioz!!!

  • shut up. i like justin bieber

  • @Jaminjassy

    loltroll

  • @TheEvilEmporerBunny seems like you like to call everyone a troll, Takes one to know one.

    lolol : )

  • @leonrussell262

Y U NO OVERLOOK THE OBVIOUS?

  • interisting rithm...

  • @kollappss This comment goes to show that not everyone who listens or appreciates Romantic music or art is intelligent.

  • @sisi40 yet, do not fell the fluff from beard and you become expert in art. you'''re tramp!!!

  • ah the idee fixe is animal at the end :D

  • Well you have to understand during this movement the man had overdosed on Opium so the dream sequence is far from realistic, so the speed of the music and the general themes bouncing back forth is mirroring his thoughts. Especially the clarinet Idee Fixe, which defines the thought of his love.

  • I guess @myhqmusicetnad is a Justin Bieber fan.

  • @presbyterosBassI And you're mentally retarded.

  • 7 Justin Bieber fans gave this a thumbs down.

  • @myhqmusicetnad Ignorant

  • @myhqmusicetnad Fuck you sir.

  • who arranged this?

  • @PinkLipGlossKS I'm not sure... but it is a rather well done arrangement of the original piece.

  • Which recording is this?

  • Very well done for the most part, it goes a bit too fast though. I wouldnt be in that much of a hurry if I was about to be executed!

  • did any one answer the question about who is performing this?

  • I guess the lesson learned here is....... smoke opium and you will create great pieces of music, like this one, in your sleep!!!

  • Creepy stuff if you read the story behind this piece... but it's good ;D

  • we played this in our 7th grade Wind Ensemble for our UIL and spring concert...the clarinet part is amazing(: its my favorite thing to play on the clarinet.

  • who plays in this recording??

  • I'm playing this in my local orchestra, it's an amazing piece.

  • I used to play this piece to my students just before a major test

  • @1MichaelGravino1 Those poor kids :c

  • @1MichaelGravino1 you are totally evil.

  • his head is then thrown with the body into an unmarked grave head betwixt some legs . just like you !.

  • which movement is this?

  • @link30222 4th movement

  • @link30222 4th of 5

  • What orchestra is performing this????

  • Comment removed

  • ahh this is great

playing trombone for this in an Orchestra class

  • @thebrodiesmusic cool i'm playing 2nd violin for this in our orchestra class lol our concert is tomorrow

  • @KevinAZheng

how did your concert go? im concertmaster and our concert is nov. 17th

  • @TheAznmofo it went alright lol. it would've of been nice if the audience didn't clap right before the clarinet solo though lol. i wish you luck in your concert

  • @KevinAZheng

    haha nice

and thanks! hope i dont mess up =3

  • @TheAznmofo Ours is December 8th 2010 at Schuylkill Elementary School in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania

  • @TheCodmw2rocks

    nice ^.^

  • @TheAznmofo But I'm a student though! its for chours

  • @TheCodmw2rocks oh i see lol

  • @thebrodiesmusic me too!

  • @thebrodiesmusic how do you think our concert went from your perspective? lol. i wish we had more practice with the extra people though. some parts felt really off

  • @KevinAZheng

    it went pretty well

i barely played during Csardas cause i didn't really know it

but the brass players atleast had March down

    the sound was good.

  • DIS MUSIC sounds joyful to me

  • i fucking hate this shit.. i have to listen to it for my music class...

  • @San0457 baww moar

If you hate this music so much you shouldn't be taking a class on it jerk. Just because you can't appreciate good music.

  • @San0457 whats there to hate about it?

  • @San0457 This is music and also my favorite song Ive played you shouldn't watch it if you hate it.

  • symphonie fantastique is an "autobiographic" composition:you can read on some music scores"episodes of the life of an artist" berlioz is this artist!there is a leitmotiv (the one at 4:05)which can be found in every movement. the fourth movement, the artist poisons himself with opium .He dreams that he has killed his beloved, that he is condemned, led to the scaffold and is witnessing his own execution.that's why the major theme is 'cut' by a powerful g minor chord:he is dead

  • Yay for music inspired by opium induced dreams I love it!!!

  • my band gets to play this in our concert! along with in the hall of the mountain king =D

  • @atemluver same, in the hall of the mountin king is great :)

  • @atemluver I'm doing the same thing in my band, they're both awsome!

  • @atemluver how did it go?

  • @mooobtube the concert is on the 26th were still making preparations and getting the small stuff down =D

  • wow, the dynamics are CRAZY good. it started so quiet, so i put my volume way up. then... BOOM! so i had to lower it cD

    my ears...

  • @ghostie7790 imagine it live!!

  • I heard this today (haha I dont play I listen cuz Im a compozer :D)

GODLY Piece of work this is.

  • I am playing this right now, and its awesome =)

  • After reading through the comments, I felt like clearing up some confusion. The character in this symphony is being beheaded—not hanged. Thus the "chop" at 4:12 and the head's "bouncing."

  • zajebista nuta

  • This piece and I have a love/hate relationship. haha

  • this piece shall have the better of me tomorrow in my leaving cert exam! :(

  • @dreamwishbelieve1 Join the club!...

  • thanks!! ^^ lol i thought no one would help thanks again!!

  • what part do u hear his head fall off my professor told me ur supposed to hear it but grrr i cant idk if its when the loud part comes xD help!

  • @Darkknight38 After the small melodic part near the end. Its just the strings at 4:14

  • @Darkknight38 there is a small oboe solo which plays his love interest's idea fixe, and then a sforzando (the chop), and then two pizz notes in tonic octaves (his head hitting the ground). It all happens between 4:06 and 4:14

  • @wildflower12 Did you really say oboe solo? That is a clarinet solo. And the song isn't about him being hanged, it's about him being beheaded. Duh!

  • @wildflower12 Did you really say oboe solo? That is a clarinet solo. And the song isn't about him being hanged, it's about him being beheaded. Duh! Clarinets Rock!!

  • @Padoinkle1 so sorry, you are correct, it is a clarinet. However, I never said anything about him being hanged. Where did you get that idea? I said chopped and then the pizz is when his head hits the ground. How did you screw that up?

  • Is it just me, or does Berlioz look an AWFUL lot like Judge Ghis from FFXII?

  • @Alexisthecrowing Well spotted

  • 1:30 :)

  • If I ever get executed for any reason I want this song in the backround.

  • idea fixe...............................my life

  • our high school band played this & just the song itself is simply amazing. we did great. we got straight one's at contest. Everyone loves the song. & the quite interesting story behind it

  • someone should make an animation of the story behind this song and sync it ;D

  • i agree

  • @UnluckyGambler

That's a great idea! If Frank Frazetta animated...or maybe some old school Don Bluth, that would be a blast to watch!

  • i'm in middle school and im playing this except it is a slightly modified version although it is still cool

  • I really love the story behind March to the Scaffold, probably my fondest piece I ever played in all my years of playing the violin. It was a pleasure to play this in Class A at state orchestra contest last year.

  • @Kasuhaku Yea, shinytrombone11 is right. you were probably playing an arrangement of it. Because the real one is very diffucult. plus, it calls for 4 bassoons.

  • 你们好!很喜欢, 很喜欢!

  • amazing, perfect. now that i know that it's about a dilusion of being marched to the hanging place, i understand and respect the peice alot more

  • playing this in orchestra. bangin song

  • im doing this for my leaving at the mo.Brilliant way better than mozart

  • im studyin it to i prefer it cuz ders less themes to learn lol...i hate seachanges...

ps 4 anyone who wants 2 gve sum1 else a headache get them 2 listen to raymond deane."seachanges"

  • Comment removed

  • Or you could just have them try to read your "English". That would also do the trick.
