  • Julie completely backed-out on her point. If you're going to be stupidly poignant and insensitive, at least be consistently stupid.

"Oh no, he mentioned Katrina! I have to fold immediately"

  • I imagine the students arguing for libertarianism got into Harvard almost completely because of luck...

  • @guildmastersan How do you figure?

  • @guildmastersan And a little help from mommy and daddy, ironically enough.

  • lot of asianss :p

  • In a global labor market, there is no question that coercion is at work to some extent. Third world markets are dictated by starvation, poverty, and inferior wage, safety, and environmental regulations. That is inherently problematic for any nation that prohibits involuntary servitude etc slavery aside. As well, profits are made possible through infrastructure, security, etc. that facilitate shipping, sale, and such. That stated, this series provides a very comprehensive view of libertarianism.

  • wow he didnt use a telapromter

  • Try not to confuse rights with needs. A lot of people can not obtain there needs in this economy or economic model around the world.

Now the wants outweigh the needs of others because of compassion lacking in those that hoard money. Simple

The court made money free speech, poor people have no speech. While making money free speech they also inadvertently attached compassion to money. If compassion were free there would be no starving children. Why hoard compassion?

  • It looks really boring there.

  • seriously... I would have slapped half of the idiots there. how can you say that it's okay to redistribute using force what I've earned with my hard work? Logic is not for women, sandwiches are!

  • Easter morning. 1 room. 20 hidden easter eggs. 5 kids. 2 are very competitive. parents say "go". the two competitive kids find 15 and 5 eggs. the 3 non-competitive kids get zero. there were enough for every one. the two competitive ones TOOK control of the event in the sense that they MADE it NECESSARY to compete 'AGAINST' the others to get any eggs. it doesn't seem right overall. the balance of the situation seems off. 'because they can' is the justification? regard for others?

  • the question of FULL DISCLOSURE comes ... in business dealings, in the free market, do people TRULY understand how some transactions might work against their future prosperity... & do corporations, & businesses, intend 2 silently expand holdings 2 such degree that can b said 2 harm those who do not want/need 2 feel compelled 2 conquest of holdings... in other words, just because i do not feel the need 2 constantly compete 2 buy more & more real-estate, should i eventually be deprived?

  • realizing that we are all 'one' helps clarify a number of these ideas...

  • but what of the RIGHT of the 'lesser' to make their own CHOICES of their own FREE WILL so that they to may gain the experiences, good and bad, which would enable them to become refined beings -- to gain the enlightened state of the so-called 'greater' individuals? It is a theft of sorts to rob them of the experiences which might allow them to move towards 'enlightenment', and 'refinement of soul'. So it seems hypocritical, for the 'enlightened' to want to enforce 'enlightened behaviour'

  • Oh man does Julia suck at arguing... Please just let John "the Trailer-Voice" Libertarianson talk.

  • Julia is a moron. She's damaging the other 2 guys arguments every time she speaks.

  • sorry character limitation...

you have to read from the first post form the bottom (6 posts)

  • The whole discussion is crocked from the very beginning. Not because of the starting assumption - people's fundamental liberty - and not because of the points following this assumption:

Nozick: What makes income distribution just? (12'47)

    1. Justice in acquisition (first holdings)

    2. Justice in Transfert (free market)

    3. [take from the rich for the poor is unjust] (can't find the right moment with the slide shown)

  • @luscusredbeard (fu.... character limitation)

The whole distorsion of the following discution about taxation is resulting from the poor defined first point "justice in acquisition".

A majority of people feels that somehow taking from the rich to help the poor is more moral than let them starve to death.

Somehow it is not right that a minority of people can gather extraordinery wealth while others dispair.

  • Well the arguments of the "libertarians" in the video have been nuked 170 years ago in a piece of work by Pierre-Joseph Proudhon "What Is Property?" (see Wikipedia).

Proudhon agrees to all 3 points, but he states that if the first was taken seriously, there whould be no extraordinary rich people.

  • Everything that an individual builds by himself, alone in the complete processing, truly belongs to him.

Whenever the processing implies the help of somebody else (and nowadays it is true for nearly everythin), then the result no longer is only property but that the result is a poccession of the coworkers in with every one of them has a share part.

Thus the reward earned selling it has to be fairely shared among the coworkers.

  • In the end you could not have some individual making a huge fortune by selling expensive sport gears maked in Asia for extreme low costs, because the acqisition of the gears is not fair to the people building them for almost nothing.

The price paid, should be fairely shared between all people living for the creation of this products from owner of the company to the worker.

Because the owner without the workers never could sustain alone his company, therefore he is no longer the true owner.

  • The ownership has become diluted in all people involved in the company.

This is only a quick scratch of the resoning and there are objections to this view, and they are the same today as they were for 170 years, for those interested they are all met in the book...

  • ..Mr. Burns?

  • The girl at 20:50 is weird....

  • The morality of stealing a loaf of bread: It isn't about whether or not the act of stealing a load of bread is moral, immoral, or justified. The real question is... Do I have a right to defend my property when you try to steal my loaf of bread. And the answer to that is yes. How do you have any legitimate claim on something I have made entirely myself. Should I give you a load of bread? Yes. Should I be forced at gunpoint against my will to give it to you? No.

  • Rights are not something that can be awarded or revoked through a voting process or the consent of the majority.

He's accepting the mythical social contract as fact. If a a violent gang illegitimately gained jurisdiction over a specific territory, of which your house resided, and they began to extort you for money on a yearly basis. Surely the mere fact that you are allowed to sell your house and move to a different plot of land outside of their jurisdiction does not make this right.

  • @dslkflkdsfskldfj How can a person declare his own set of rights while living in a society among other people? Can I decide one day that I have the "right" to free bread and thus I'm now justfied to have free bread at all bakeries? Just as you may ridicule and disrespect my idea of the right to free bread, others may disrespect your own set of supposed rights. Therefore, rights that aren't approved by society are meaningless.

  • @JJFZ3000 A possible hole in your argument is that this would then mean that China could vote for laws within the United States - because the Chinese people outnumber the people in the United States. Similarly, the principle would also allow for the people in a town to claim the moral right to vote for laws contrary to the greater state. Establishing the number of people at which democracy is no longer ridiculous is essentially arbitrary. Troubling indeed.

  • @JJFZ3000 Rights are merely universally preferable acts that can be reached a priori. You have no right to x if it infringes upon the rights of others. Thus your right to free bread could not be universally preferable.

  • life's not fair, get used to it - Bill Gates. True, its simply the reality. These students study at Harvard while other youngsters are making snickers. Some have perfect vision, I have glassed, some are born blind. There's no equal opportunities. Life shows us that you can win games even if you were dealt a bad hand.

  • i really dont like any of those "libertarian team" guys

  • @cynicshminic Why? You like when Government tells you what to do? Gov "Suck mah dick". You : "YES"

  • carnivores are inherently injust to the libertarian philosophy I suppose lol

  • need is one thing an dessert is another.

  • Without justice, no farmer will farm. To the extent men are exploited by threat or force, they will seek to hide their talent, skills and capital. Societies grow poor when governments grow rich.

  • Damn that girl in the orange Spooky shirt is preeeeeeetyyyyyyy!

  • Man this is the place I belong, what am I doing at home???

  • Pachulya is not song only, but is leaning.

  • the rich have to adapt to this phrase "with great wealth, comes great responsibility"(i know its a ripoff from spider man lol) but its true the more wealth you acquire the more you are responsible for the economy wether it be inflation, rise in taxes, job losses, etc. you hold more responsibility to give back to society.

  • Nice discussions but even if they bring a lot of good arguments, they don't have/take the time to go deeper. This makes the whole thing looks black & white (without the necessary playground of tones to support each group of opinion). Is it good to tax the rich? (but.. wait!.. what kind of rich person?? how much do you tax it??) I mean, basicaly it would not be good to tax 99.9% as taxing 0,01% would be too much infime to support the idea of taxation. A no end debate if we only explore surface..

  • anyone have any good resources on theories of justice ? I have an exam on monday the 12/12/11 !!

  • I believe that democracy is the best form of government present, but it is quite bad form of government .

  • @qaz010wsx how do you think goverment should be structured?

  • well, it is always just the majority rule. the poor are majority so taxation is right, the day rich will become majority taxation will be wrong. the christian were thrown to tigers in Rome because Romans were majority and their pleasure, ecstasy was right. the cabin boy was minority (he didn't agree to lottery)was eaten. in democracy the government seek to fulfill majority (here poor people) desires.

  • Co ja pacze ?

  • Michael Sandel has the voice of Bob Barker. and even looks like he could be on the price is right when he holds the mic to the students.

  • LOL GOLDMAN SACHS FOUNDATION, FRIEDMAN... ALL JEWS. HARVARD = JEWISH PIT

  • why are the old videos being brought back? wtf?

  • awesome argument is awesome

  • 41:50 I hate to say this but the Koch Brothers and others in the top 1% have used the openness of our society to convince a large number of people that taxation, ANY taxation, is wrong. This is briefly touched on, but Libertarianism is fundamentally at odds with Democracy because the idea of individual liberty taken to the extreme leads to such a degree of selfishness and a lack of altruism that it ultimately threatens the survival of all. Too much oxygen will kill you, liberty is the same way.

  • @uscdave1124 yes. and many libertarians become ancap, as they see the state as not being democratic and is instead a corrupt coercive force. You can vote on who stays in power with your money through buying products!

  • I have seen this video therefore I can now write that I went to Harvard on my CV.

  • 18:30 nice Pokemon t-shirt man! :D

  • flip flop @49:30 :D

  • after a long watch

Tax is not thievery, consider it as security money, ransom, tribute.

if there is no tax, there is no salary for govt,

if there is no govt it will be anarchy, and people like Bill Gates will never existed

  • Robin Hood must be Libertarian's Nemesis.

  • hm komme aus deutschland

  • Damn I tought it was a Justice music vid.

    -.-"

  • @rikicopini1 This is a higher pleasure ;)

  • naa ich hab was unanständiges entdeckt

  • no money,no friends

  • American... Money is the way of life. Its a little bit like in india where certain people have NO chance since their birth and its justified with the deeds they commited in a former life.

Having no money, being a"looser"is the worst case in USA.

But this society should determine itself how it treats a poor mayority

Id be interested if the prof knows Marx as good as Locke and J.S.Mill

  • @ruedigergeppert it's not quite like that in India :)

  • Oh...wait, lady you can kill someone if you want...but you also know that there will be a price to pay for that. THAT is self possesion...you can do ANYTHING you want regarldless of where, when or how you live.

  • Welcome back to the front page HARVARD!!

  • wow i hope this old cunt dies.

  • @UrMumsVagina Why?

  • I think the Skateboard kid proved that you don't need brains but money to get into Harvard. He must of taking the same root as Dubya, lol.

  • This harvard stuff is run by Satan

  • dammm this is where I belong... Awesome video

  • Well.. Still Had To Review When Still Young (Kindergarden) Then Crucially When Being Teenager Then Strictly Wiser To Maturity. Heartbreaker. Patience.

  • Harvard again? I mean still, cuz again would mean it was on the main page 2 months ago, and now again, but its still cuz its been 2-3 months and its still Harvard... Well atleast its another episode

  • Am I the only one that thinks the students look a bit derpy?

  • professor is speaking on and on so he gets tired i can say he should take rest after this.

  • In my country, we also have a somewhat social security in place. The well off don't worry much about it because they can afford to have that portion of income taken away for savings. I'm not rich but I happen to agree with this policy. However, the poor, and even some of my own peers, absolutely dislike it. To them it's depravation of earned income. Basically, there's no way government can keep everyone happy on every policy they make. I may agree with this policy but disagree on the next.

  • I like the idea of Libertarianism, but I'm not saying it's the best way to run things. If the world as it is is anything to go by, I think the fusion of all these ideas becomes the final product. Also, each individual theory provides the necessary checks to prevent extremism. The objections are there for a reason and building / compromising on those issues will certainly provide the correct answer and best result.

  • I've just started following this series and I thinks it's really great that Harvard puts this kind of stuff up.

I come from an Asian country, and yes we are democratic, but more than that, we live in a highly meritocratic society. Which really explains why you find many Asians working very hard at education. It's very much the culture in this part of our world. Frankly, I thinks it stinks that I have to live my whole life running on the tips of my toes and I'd much rather be somewhere else.

  • The three libertarians are, in order from left to right: an entitled slob, a smarmy wee tick and a frankly terrifying psycho-girl. Hell no, let the family starve!

  • @danmcdaid To degrade the speakers is an argumental falacy. I think libertarianism is wrong but its better if you give fair arguments against it

  • @conchamolusco You're quite right, I was just being naughty.

I do genuinely find them a bit scary/horrible though.

  • @danmcdaid Haha, I really do too

  • I don't think students at Universities like Harvard are an more intellegent than any average person. Their biggest talent is being able to concetrate for very long periods of very boring material. Their reading comprehention is really good. I think smarts is also shown in people who can solve problems, like a good mechanic, and computer people. Some of the smartest people are able to think outside the box to solve problems.

  • @mjpitche maybe because money gets you into harvard more than smarts do ex. tray banks went to this school

  • Αfter a couple of videos, I still cannot believe that there are Harvard students with so shallow thoughts and such an incapacity to construct pure logical arguments in avoiding basic reasoning mistakes... The basis of the social contract- not even democracy!- is to cede a part of your personnal liberty for the benefits of living together with others, and thus yes people, the collective partially owns us! If you don't like it, you have the right on the free choice not to live in society!

  • @AetiusMerlin Victoria, I think, has cought the better idea of the case... :)

  • why is this still on the front page?

  • +1

  • I only intended to watch like... 2-5 minutes of the video... I ended up watching the whole thing.

  • This isn't teaching, it's right-wing indoctrination under the guise of philosophy.

  • Fact: usually rich people don't earn their money fairly.Bill Gate doesn't.

  • lol this school looks asian

  • Is it weird that im 15 and ENJOY watching these?

    I believe it is

  • @MrSpeartron

It's not weird at all. Just means that you're not an idiot.

  • @MrSpeartron It is, you're an idiot.

  • Everyone assumed going to Harvard will solve hunger, unemployment, getting rich and high level of status. It is presumed a ceasar's class of learning. Can this professor analyze a simple street protest called "Wall Street take-over" the practical way?

  • This remain why I don't go to church..

  • when the guy says "gays and lesbians" at 9:25

the no-souled ginger sitting in the front row puts his head down in shame

    i wonder why?

  • I thought it was Harvard. Is it an Asian division of Harvard or an Asian school?

  • @mjpitche asian people are smart.

  • @mrfishsticklover: absolutely a myth. First and second generation immigrants in Asian families just study much harder than other people. They understand education is a way for better life. Jewish understands that as well.

  • @mrfishsticklover Maybe, but maybe it's just that education is held in high esteem in their counties and therefore they work harder than their American counter parts, just like Indians. The sad thing is that this is a famous American university yet there are almost no Americans attending. They should only allow people from the US to attend. Other countries have their own uniersities. Let their people study there.

  • @mjpitche: your suggestion is exactly the same as putting a trade barrier between countries. That's not how the world works. No country can be completely isolated. If you don't want foreign students in US schools, don't allow any immigrant. As a result of that, the aging American will lose their retirement and social security. US just doesn't have enough new born to support the people exiting labor force.

  •

  • The libertarians are so retarded

  • yummy educcative o.o :B <3

  • Only the insane have strength enough to prosper. Only those who propser truly judge what is sane. The victorious decide what justice is, which means justice is a concept built on insanity.

  • No se trata principalmente de distribuir la riqueza, va más allá de ser solidario. Se trata, según creo, de evitar el absolutismo en cuanto a poder de coerción, acumulado en una persona o grupo económico.

  • '' Free to choose '' So we are free to choose that this must go off the homepage of youtube?

  • @iJordiii You're free to choose to either click on the video or to ignore it.

  • How is this going to help anyone get a fucking job? Might as well have all these idiots working at mcdonalds to be a productive part of society,

  • @BeepimajeepBeep That's pretty much where things are going. Best thing to do to make a decent living is get a skill. Tech school will make you a ton more money than college.

  • wtf the man has a pokemon shirt lmfao 18:50

  • @coolmon99 pokemon lol.

  • @coolmon99 College students can be pokemon fans too! :D

    Anyway, great and interesting speech.

  • 37:49 student sleeping on the background! FAIL

  • @ivanovish90 Wat? it took him 37 minutes!!?? -took me about 3!!!

  • so you pay all these £ pounds to learn that fagats have the right to deform societies under this liberation allegations ... u wasted my time .

  • @omer88f Why the harsh language? It is only a mental exercise. Quite basic even.

  • @orjanst1 I hope it's so .. as he concluded that they have the right to do it if they didn't harm anyone it wasn't even a matter of discussion or opening perspectives .

  • maybe taxation is equivalent to forced labor but it is the intrinsic intention behind the act that separates them from being the absolute same

  • That's because we are not just individuals, we form groups. For the group to be happy,it can't just be one happy rich guy (who decide for the others, who has everything he wants) and the other are poor and unhappy.
