at this point i forgot what we were discussing, i'll get you the date robert emmet was hanged, i know it was in the 1800's. amyway, i got that album from Tommy makem himself in 1997 0r 99....can't recall, i like this version and enjoy these fellas
Sorry, but that's not a particularly helpful thing to say. If I'd ever even heard of Irvine's version I might agree with you, but this version is the first I ever heard of this song. And the first version you hear tends to stay with you.... which is probably why I like this group in the first place, since I grew up listening to the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem.
Where did Irvine record it? Or is there a version on Youtube?
Could not, for the life of me figure out what he was saying before "Freedom did stand." Sounded like one word and then half another word, or something. Thought maybe my CD was messed up.
@BarbaricGoose this is about the 1798 rebellion, all the songs off this album are. you are thinking about 1916, although robert emmet died before that
@orckiller91 I'm most definitely not talking about Connolley. The Battle of Ballynahinch took place during the 1798 rebellion. General Henry Munro lead the United Irishmen in the battle, and at the end he was betrayed, captured, hung and decapitated in front of his own house. I know what I'm talking about.
@TheMcErlean I don't know what you're talkin' about, man. The Battle of Ballynahinch took place during the 1798 rebellion. General Henry Munro lead the United Irishmen in the battle, and at the end he was betrayed, captured, hung and decapitated in front of his own house. I know what I'm talking about. Feel free to look it up.
As Monroe I'n WV I like it

Not the greatest song but the best we have....his real name was Henry Munro and he was an Irish Presbyterian.

This is one of my favorite songs. I've written my own song (a parody) to this tune -- in fact it's the first related song on the right!
As for lyrics:
"noise of their cannons NE'ER DAUNT US, so" (I sing it as "Ne'er daunted us"
"We fought THEM EIGHT hours"
"Those TYRANTS did call"
"They THERE did condemn him"
"For WHOM freedom did stand" (grammatically should be "whom for")
"DEAREST OULD Ireland"
"If HER sons were all rebels"

Thanks for that.

I'm surprised "Them eight" slipped by me, though.

The other (?)s are the same as I heard, by the way. Emmet was one of the leaders of the Rebellion.

It's true that he was in the rebellion, but he didn't die in "The year '98." He died five years later.
So I wasn't sure if there was another Emmet I was unaware of, or if I was hearing it incorrectly.
