  • he is such a good actor. when i first saw this, i was in tears. i felt SO BAD for poor thornton.

i don't really think she's that great of an actress, but it was still a great miniseries...he acted enough for the both of them.

  • RA can have me as his possession any day, any how, anywhere.

  • I now understand why she rejected him. he could care less about what her thoughts were about the issue, he did want to posses her. you can hear it in his voice and manner. he didn't even care to let her finish talking about what she though could be done, he did not respect her ideas. i would of rejected him to, even though he is nice to look act.

  • @ldans001 i don't think he wanted to possess her, i think he really did love her...but they had extremely different views, and obviously at that point in time it was a mistake for him to propose...

  • I like this scene because it explains why later, Thornton sent fruit to Mrs. Hale.

  • I just love the fact, that he's about to take her in his arms, when he cries out: "I don't want to possess you, I wish to marry you, because I love you"

You can almost feel his need for her. Heartbreaking...

  • I so love the way he says "Excuse me?" It's hilarious!

  • @musicalmeg19 i totally agree!!! , everytime i heard it i feel the same , only he can do that :x ,i love this movie so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The chemistry between the actors is so wonderful it's just a joy to watch. Even though they quite changed this scene (as Margaret is much colder and more angry in the book), it's done beautifully.

Their kiss at the station is I think the best onscreen period drama kiss ever.

Perfect casting both in appearance and talent :)

  • Richard Armitage looks like my father when he was young, and Mr Thornton with his stern and disciplined countenance, his sense of justice, all of his personality indeed reminds me of my father. This is one of the reasons I love this film: it's a bit like going back in time before my birth and meeting my daddy :)))

  • When he first closes the door he says something about fruit but I couldn't figure out the words...Does anybody know what he says? I can't understand it!

  • @RubyRaen "One minute we can be talking about colours of fruit and then of love. How does that happen?"

  • @RubyRaen he says i've never noticed the colour of this fruit

  • They both act this scene so beautifully together . The casting department really got it right !

God I would have loved to have played her part .

  • They don't make love stories like these any more...<3

  • @HeathDances Omg! Good for him! Yeah, I read about him being in The Hobbit on the North and South boards on IMDb. But I'm so glad he has made it to Hollywood! He deserves it. He is a GREAT actor!

  • Daniela Denby-Ashe is so beautiful. Not only is she beautiful, she is a GREAT actress! I believed every second of her in this movie. I would love to see more of her. I would love to see more of them both, actually. What other good movies are they in? (Not together, just either/or).

  • @AugustineEmmeline I am not sure what Daniela is up to right now but she was in a show in the UK for many years called "My Family" and it just recently went off the air. Richard was in a TV show called Robin Hood for 3 years, then he did Spooks (known as MI5 here in the USA) for 3 seasons, right now he has a part in the new Captain America movie, and he is currently filming "The Hobbit" where he will be playing Thorin Oakenshield who is the leader of the dwarves! He has made it to Hollywood!

  • @AugustineEmmeline unfortunately, producers prefer ugly skeletons who don't know what acting is, like Keira Knightley or Gwyneth Palthrow :(

  • @msinvincible2000 Haha, well, I actually like Keira Knightley AND Gwenyth Paltrow, but I know what you mean. Daniela Denby-Ashe looks like a REAL woman: some flesh on her, womanly, curvaceous, not stick thin like KK. Or even GP. And she IS a better actress than KK, I will agree (although I DO think KK can act. She just has a limited range).

  • @AugustineEmmeline I believe in her hunchback

  • @phantomphan77 What?

  • I love this scene and I understand why Margred refuses Mr. Thornton. But why did she say: Pleas dont continue in that way. Its not the way of a gentleman.

I watched this movie several times, but I still dont get it. Why was it not gentleman like when Mr Thornton told Margret about his feelings??

    can someone explain that??

  • @Gotteskind22 A gentleman would have certainly asked her father first and certainly wouldn't have mentioned something as primitive as 'feelings'.

  • Okay this is the first time I've encountered this and I'm not quite sure on a couple of things: 1) Is this a movie or a series 2) Whichever one that it may be, is it posted on youtube?

I would really appreaciate it if someone were to answer my question. thanks : )

  • @DistressedDamsel79 It is a miniseries and I think it is posted on YT. Search "North and South episode 1" and it will probably come up.

  • @HeathDances thanks a lot! I was a little confused because some people were calling it a movie but then it said episode 2 on the screen...thanks for the clarity!

  • @HeathDances It's currently on Netflix. Being a BBC drama, it's likely also something you can reserve at your local public library. It's really excellent. I have taken to having it on periodically when I'm working at my computer. I get something new out of it with each repetition.

  • @beckyontheroad Becky you needed to reply to DistressedDamsel79 not me. I own about 3 copies of the DVD and I am the one who uploaded the scene. LOL

  • Okay, i understand why they decided to cut off a bit of this. It was getting a bit too Pride and Prejudice...like verbatim and really, I love this series in it's own right and will not suffer comparisons.

  • oh this is so passionate! Mr.thorton is so amazing but his ways are so disagreeable...i so understand why margaret said no to him.

  • "Well you shouldn't because I do not like you and never have" - Liar liar pants on fire. You love him Margaret!! You're just in denial, lol!!

  • thanks!!!!, it was greit!

  • Ohhh please! somebody could write here what she says! (the part that had been cut) the problem is that i can not speak very well English and the accent makes me a little difficult, please help.

  • @TheAndo22

Margaret: It is offensive for you to imagine that I acted in a way deliberately to make you grateful to me. That I publicly wish to ensnare you, as I think your sister called it. And your mother...

Thornton: My mother? What does she have to do with this?

Margaret: She's made it clear to me what a catch you are. How all the ladies of Milton wish to marry you!

  • I loved this series. I'm always watching again. But my heart will perfectly, Mr Thornton and Mr Darcy. Are very different stories, so I have more options to thrill me ...

  • OMG!!! why they cut, this part?? its explained why she refused,,, thats not good!!

  • I am SO disappointed!! I bought the DVD, and though it has extras that the version I watched on Youtube does not, it does not have the extended proposal scene! I don't understand it.

  • I don't mind that they cut this scene down because it was such a powerful scene regardless. But one thing I'm confused by is the emphasis on the gloves. That part was in the final cut as well, in episode 3, and what I'm wondering is was it meant to mean something or just some insignificant move? Obviously, her instinct was to catch him and return his things, but taking into consideration her very recent rejection of him she clearly thought better of calling him back. So, why the inclusion?

  • I like how she struggles to say, "...because I d-do not like you..." while looking into his deeply emotional face.

  • I love Richard's voice. So deep and sexy

By the way, I like Thornton so much, he reminds me of my father (in personnality) and Richard Armitage looks so much like my father when he was young.

  • @msinvincible2000 wow~Then your father must be a "catch" when he was young XD

  • This is such a fantastic scene, I wish that they would have kept it as the original version

  • He is so handsome! I don't know why it took so long for her to fall in love with him. I would have married him when he proposed! I am kinda bummed they took some stuff out. I liked the detail this had and I loved how she said the line about all his potential suitors haha They need to work together in Pride and Prejudice. It aws made in 2004? That's WHY too long that they haven't done a good, chemistry required project together. Forget Keira Knightly & that other dude, these two shoulda been P&P

  • This one makes so much more sence!!!!! why did they cut it??! :(

  • What was I doing from past years....I watched it only this week and can't stop watching again and again and can't stop reading.

  • @adamaraju me too!!! Same exact affliction - the North and South affliction!

  • I find it strange that the wikipedia entry for this novel doesn't mention the obvious connection to pride and prejudice. It is certainly understandable that she refuses him - her first vision of him was one of cruelty and it's hard for her to forget that. Also, like Darcy, he never really tries to get her to see him fully because he knows she hates him and he is ashamed of his feelings, even when they finally overwhelm him

  • i don't know why but everytime he said "Excuse me?" in that deep voice of his, I let out an involuntary laugh.....

  • @ashachoc

    HAHA I did too!

  • Breaks my heart when his voice breaks...

  • This makes more sense why she refused him. I think she had a pretty good reason though and it's completely understandable. But she was a bit mean.

  • i don't get it. what's the significance of the gloves at the end?

  • wow, I this a much better scene, to bad they cut it out. Thanks for posting it!

  • Everytime he says, in that heart-broken voice, "I wish to marry you!" I feel my heart twinge and sigh and weep.

  • I wanted to scream at her "you idiot!" during this scene.

  • Some of the deleted scenes, I can see why they left them out, but why cut up this one? The missing parts add so much more depth to the situation. On another note, I love the way he says, "Excuse me," after she interrupts his proposal. I felt bad for him, but whenever he says that, I laugh a little.

  • @SgtPlmFry That "Excuse me?" is said in such a quiet and yet dangerous way, great scene!

  • Thanks for posting! The argument makes much more sense now; in the shorter version avail in US half the argument is missing, so the conversation makes no sense; missing her comment about her mother liking fine fruit and it being hard to find, and missing her comment that Thornton's mother said her son was a catch and his sister implies Margaret is out to ensnare him. It makes the argument abrupt. And she doesn't pick up the gloves at the end.

  • @LtDualla Yes this scene only made proper sense to me after watching this. Especially the part about the fruit!

  • Comment removed

  • his voice went so sad when he told her he loved her :(

  • this is should get more views. This is a great proposal scene. I love it. I agree with both of them. I agree with margarett's refusal and his anger. Wrong time to be proposing to her you sexxxyyy beautiful man you. and How dare you Margarett deny your feelings because he's a tradesman? oh you crazy kids.

  • @compnetworks 'Oh you crazy kids'. You are so right, they're both nuts! I love them to bits :)

  • @9adalin9 RUDE and deleted!

  • @HeathDances rude? maybe... true? YES!

  • @9adalin9 No it isn't true. She has curves and she IS NOT fat. You don't know what a real woman is apparently.

  • @HeathDances curves? or roles? lets think about that one for a moment. and if a REAL woman is one that eats herself into a heart attack then the human race is in serious trouble...

  • @9adalin9 You know what I think? I think you are delusional and I have no idea why I am wasting my time replying to you because you are the type of person who is really messed up in the head if you think she classifies as fat. I notice you like to go around and make rude comments everywhere because you have a pathetic life. I feel sorry for you.

  • actually i never liked his kind of english accent...but when he speaks like that i really love it :D

  • Aah I remember now, she was already awake when Fanny and the servant were talking, so she heard. Imagine people mocking her, poor girl :(

They should have just kept it all, it explains things better. I was quite confused. First she throws herself passionately onto Thornton to protect him, then suddenly she throws cold water in his face.

  • For some reason this movie kinda reminds me of pride and prejudice. At least in the beginning anyway.

  • I think there's no difference from the final version except the gloves so I can't see how this explains her refusal better:) love the episode anyway.

  • She lying

  • GODDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!

  • I love that murderous look he gives her in 2:24 ! so intense! :)

  • This is a much better version than what they originally aired! I especially love the gloves at the end...and her look, "I should get these back to him...but I can't face him again...so conflicted what do I DO." so emotional!

  • I can't believe they deleted ANY of this scene! It explained so much about why Margaret felt the way she did, and it's cute at the beginning how she catches herself saying something bad about Milton and tries to correct herself so Mr.Thornton doesn't feel so bad. lol. This scene barely needs music - the emotion's already there. Thanks for posting! I LOVE this story!!! :)

  • NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO *tear* say YES you stupid girl say yes!!!!!! thankgod for the ending !!!!

  • Jeez! Lizzie and Darcy weren't this prone to 'willfully misunderstand' each other! Thank you so much for posting this.

  • wow it's great with the natural sounds. the wood creaking and all. give it a whole different dimension of chills!! hehe. the music really masks the intrusion/voyeur factor of the audience.

  • This scene should have definitely not been deleted in its entirity. It explains Margarete's feelings so much better than the final scene in the series. The Director should have appreciated and listened to his/her first instinct. Great scene - thanks for posting.

  • Well that just made a whole lot more sense. The proposal aspect was better with the additions but understandable without as well. However the fruit has confused me every time I've watched on Netflix instant play. Should've cut the fruit all together or at least left the rest of that part in to make sense. Seemed rather random dialogue without her response to it. Thanks for posting. Glad to know it's on the DVD. Must get me a copy. :D

  • This scene is a longer version of the one in the movie. Well worth a look.

  • Well because of RobinHood he is well known in the States, but I was a fan already. Thank god for the BBC.

  • This scene was not "deleted" when they aired it here because it was in a mini-series format. Anyway, I enjoyed seeing it all over again. And because of your comments, I think I'll finally read the book I downloaded years ago. I read so many romance novels in the past but this is a refreshing change because here the man is the one who's "impetuous" while the woman is level-headed (for the most part). Needless to say, Richard Armitage is really dreamy.

  • They should have kept this full scene in the movie! It explained a little better her reasons for refusing. Where did you find this deleted scene? Are there more? Thanks for posting!

  • It's on the DVD :-)

  • @pherrnst I agree completely. The dialogue that wasn't included shows that margaret had full knowledge of her current situation and it actually makes me more sympathetic for her actions. I wish they had at least left this in the finalized movie!!

  • @pherrnst I think they cut it out because it was totally made up. Margaret never said that in the book. In general, this scene (in the book) was never about being rich or poor at all. Margaret disdained the fact that her conduct druing the riot was so misunderstood , and was eager to make it clear to him that it was only her womanly instinct and had nothing to do with HIM in particular. On the contrary, she goes on to say how much she doens't like him. During the whole scene she's angry and cold

  • i also love the part where thornton was in one session with mr. hale and margaret was falling asleep, the way he was looking at her while she was serving them the drink was a killer! i am a late richard armitage fan, he's not really famous here in the usa, but after seeing this via netflix i really fell in love with this man, he's a great actor, very effective, he talks and looks like he's talking and talking straight at you; i searched for his other works and love him the same way in robin hood

  • I live in the USA too. I discovered him almost 4 years ago watching North & South and my crush has not gone away! lol He definately has a certain charisma as an actor and there is just so many reasons I love this man! ;-)

  • @dcrsaradb I also am in the USA and have not seen Richard Armitage before this!

Now I can't stop watching him!

  • still trying to figure out if margaret said that her friend betsy/bessy (?) higgins "died" --- during this time her friend was very sick but not dead

  • She said her friend "Bessy" Higgins is "dying"

  • thank you for uploaded this video ^__^

  • I love how direct he is when he says that he loves her! How could she not believe him!? It's craziness!

Oh, and it just breaks my heart when he says to his mum "I was right. She won't have me." And then something about loving her more than ever after her refusal! Oh man! I cried when I read that bit in the book!

  • i know! i think this part and the "look back at me" are the most heart-wrenching scenes ever! i can just imagine how Mr. Thornton must be feeling!

  • ah, the misunderstandings... -_-() that really had to hurt

  • novel is by Elizabeth Gaskell

I am really impressed by this actress who acts this beautifully as well as the scene at the station- there is tenderness in every fibre.

  • who wrote north and south

  • This scene sounds like Pride and prejudice proposal Scene, but anyway I love this one too.

  • So the proposal scene in the book is one of my favorites of all time, but I'm really glad they changed it so much in the movie. If I'd had to see him rejected after saying the wonderful, amazing crap he says in the book, I'd have thrown something at the screen! :D

  • Just had to tell you that your comment made me laugh. "amazing crap"...I love it! I agree with you, BTW. Thanks for making my day:)

  • @kaitie07 LOL. so true...

  • you know, he forgets his hat^^ but I really love this movie!:)

  • lol!! & his gloves apparently. The man was freaking piss & heart broken. he wasn't even thinking about them.

  • As perfect as this is, it would have been great to have had the book version of the proposal acted out on screen by these two, WHOO!!!

  • @rosdal90 yeah i agree, this scene is great, but i still personally feel it can't match the book scene. This series is incredible (and my favourite) but it still sort of lacks a bit compared to the amazing book...

  • That is EXACTLY the point that I was trying to make. The book version is unbelievably breathtaking. I'm pleased to see that we agree. :)

  • @1o951o8 i agree

  • @1o951o8 I don't think anything could ever have matched the book! lol. But I think this movie comes as close as anything could have. The book's incredible. :)

  • The book does this scene differently and I think a little better, because Mr. Thornton announces that he will not stop loving her. Honestly the book's ending is better too, but this is still my favorite film, second only to 1995 Pride and Prejudice.

  • yeah, but don't you think the books ending was a bit sudden? of course, really romantic, when he's showing her the flower and she doesn't dare to look him in the eye.. but it ended too fast! i know, that the movie was unrealistic, to kiss on a train station.. but still... wasn't the kiss so sweet?

  • OMGoodness!! I love the ending & the kiss. I thought it was so yummy, soft & delicious. the book ending is good(it was rushed),but I think welch's ending is way better than the book. its more exciting & its full of more passion.

  • I totally agree^^ especially the 'second only to PAP' part^^

  • ooooohhhh i get the fruit thing now...

  • No wonder he sent them a basket of fruit even though she rejected him during the same day.

This really explains quite a lot of things despite I like the final cut better because the emotions were much more charged.

  • Thanks so much for posting this!!!

  • I prefer the real version... we actually see Mr Thornton say "I love you" and "i understand you completely" They made the right decision:D Although I was a little confused about the fruit bit myself. And what was with the gloves at the end?

  • lol i know! when he's says "first you make me talk of the color of fruit then of love"......i'd have told him look dude you went off on the whole fruit thing yourself don't blame me for that randomness....but thornton is still awesome no matter, even when randomly discussing the color of fruit

  • Look up Richard Armitage birthday video posted by "spikesbint", it explains this scene beautifully.

  • I agree. The explanation is really needed because the edited scene in the film is really confusing. I love this film too.

  • See, this is why I love her. She is one of the greats. What a scene, this. Thanks for posting it.

  • This full scene should've been in the movie not only because of the explaination of the reason Margret refused him so rudely but it also explains why Mr Thorton sent Mrs Hale the grapes later in the movie. Finally I think the scene with the gloves indicates that Margret maybe relized that Mr Thorton truely loved her and that she regrets how she treated him.

I love this movie thanks for posting it.

  • i just wanted to know when does she realize that she is in love with Mr Thorton ????

  • Well I think when she first sees him she is captivated by him, but then she sees him beat up someone so that changes. I think she gradually falls in love with him where as for him it was love at first site. I think she realizes she is in love with Thornton is when she sees him at Franny's wedding and Miss Latimur on his arm. I think though she started having regrets when she turned down his proposal.

  • thanks for clearing my doubts !!!!!

  • you have to love this (un)romantic proposal; ahh life we born to struggle for happiness

  • This scene had much better flow that the finalized portion and I think the ending explained a lot more about how margaret was feeling than the finalized cut, what with the gloves and everything she begins to think that perhaps she may feel something for him

  • This scene makes so much more sense as a whole. I wonder why they deleted so many parts? This way it's much more clear what's going on with Margaret and why she rejects him so bluntly.

  • I love these two,

I love the way she get's under his skin by reminding him how his behaviour is not like a gentleman in her eyes,

while all the time she's afriad of how she really feels towards him :)

  • I just love this scene is so beautiful... Mr. Thornton loves her so much...

But I have to admit that I always laugh when he says: "There are others? This happens to you every day?" =)

  • I love the way he says: "Excuse Me" with his heavy voice :)

  • Me too! That was hilarious.

  • "i dont want to possess u i wish to marry u because i love uuuu! "

  • really such beautiful words to hear...

  • Absolulty Gorgeous !!!

  • that has to be the best line in the whole 4 episodes!!

  • Well, that man can possess me any day of the week, twice on Sundays...

  • why only twice? :)

  • Because at my age I can only handle so much... ;)

  • @qkpereira there are a bajillion ladies watching this around the world who are nodding their heads vigorously upon reading your comment lol

  • @qkpereira Thank you. That made my day completely.

  • @qkpereira - I hear that!!

  • @qkpereira - I hear that!!

  • my favorite line!! ahh!!

  • wow, this is much better! I read the book and knew why she rejected him, but it was not really clear in the film, from the final version Margaret's sentences about his mother & sister are really missing. and I had friends asking after the scene "wow, why did she refuse him?" and had to explain.

  • why does she refuse him?

  • After regaining consciousness after the riots, she hears JT's sister and the maid talking about how she wants to "catch" the guy. She does not, so she feels really bad about it and wants to avoid even the thought of it. Second, she does not love him here, maybe just like him, but she definitely does not feel as strong as he does. She is also very confused, and she does not even know him well.

  • plus she is still unsure about him and how he runs the mill...and her pride was hurt when she thought that he thought that she must love him becasue she put her arms around him to save him.

  • "i do not want to possess you. I wish to marry you because i love you!"

    swoooooon~~~

  • I wonder what made them decide to shorten it. I like the extended version.

  • "i understand you completely!" *storms out*

*creeps back in again* "uum... hav you seen my glove?...oh, there it is.."

*puts on angry face again, storms out*

  • ahaha

  • her face when she realizes that he's proposing is so priceless, it totally says "oh sh** not again."

and i kind of got the impression that he only proposed to her here because of what happened at the mill and his mother's encouragement. i think he did care for her, he just wouldn't have proposed otherwise

  • i think he doesn't think that she wouldn't say yes anyway that's why

  • This scene is longer that one in the movie.

  • Yep, that is why it says "extended" proposal scene... ;-)

  • lol!

  • 'I don't wanna possess you. I wish to marry you because i love you!' i love this line,

  • Yes! its one of the places where the movie improves upon the book--at least I don't remember it there.

  • i would go weak at the knees if he said that to me. love that line!

  • Beautiful scene! They both great actors.

  • @Tofunda Verdad!!!

  • I don't understand why they didn't use this scene instead. I think it's better then the one they put in.

  • how can you not like him?
