I just don't understand what makes this tune a novelty piano solo. It is a great foxtrot rag with touches of African-American tradition: for example, the way he suddenly modulates to the relative minor in the first theme and then goes between that and the IV chord in a soulful manner.
Although this is a great performance as usual, I think it is a little rushed compared to Tom's earlier version on his Stomp Off CD "Rising Star", which is wonderful and in my opinion the definitive version.
The left hand at the opening of the second strain has a tenor voice in there that sounds a bit noveltyesque so I threw that word in there for the title of the video.
This is one of my favorite compositions. I had heard Tom play it many, many times and assumed that it was something written by one of the great novelty composers. Imagine my surprise when I found it was one of his!
The mood and the styles reminds me of Eubie Blake's Poor Katie Red. Not that this is a cheap knock off or anything like that. Love the piece and the way it's performed.
I love the feeling Tom creates with the melody and harmony in the first strain... kind of a "song is ended" sound not unlike "Trouble" rag by Crabb and Morrison; yet at the same time Tom's strain, and the whole rag, is very optimistic. The coda particularly so. Again, the thing I like about this is that the melody is so great. While a great melody is not a requirement of a good rag (other things can also make them good), it certainly helps!
