That's just WOW...seriously. Orangutans and monkies are really fucking smart. And we take it for granted. Those poor things should not be locked up inside a cage. Whoever locked them up should be in a cage.
@BlurbFish By dumping it out! Holy s*&t did you not see it spit water into a cylinder to get a f***ing peanut out of a tube to long to use fingers for! Oh its to hard to get the water out now? I guess you should figure out how you typed what you typed.
I've seen clips of orangutans sawing logs, hammering nails, rowing in a boat - using all kinds of objects. It's a little depressing to think these poor creatures have been cooped up just so you can prove they are able to spit into a tube to get a frikkin peanut.
Horrible . You are experimenting on great apes !? This discusts me! We are primates too. and to see our closest relatives in a small cage with a baby desperatly trying to get a peanut , is just heart breaking. Sick
let's save Borneo, Sumatra and rest of Indonesia to help these smart creature it's all our faults planting the palm trees and consuming products which are containing palm oil from shampoo, soap to chips and cookies that we're using everyday !!!
From the books I've read orangutans tend to be even more clever about solving things like this than even chimpanzees. The reason is that orangutans tend to live in smaller, less socially intense groups so they generally give more time and brain power to solving problems. A chimpanzee spends more time and brain power socializing, so when they're presented with something like this they're more likely to be distracted by other things going around them and be half-hearted in their efforts.
Agreed, Orangutan's have demonstrated amazing spatial intelligence with their use of tools, and maninipulation of objects. Chimps have been shown to demonstrate "social" intelligence, often times for manipulation and personal gain.
What's really funny about this experiment is that anthropologists carried out an almost identical experiment with children (the only difference being that the water was in a pitcher, versus a fountain as it is here) and a six and eight year old boy both became frustrated with the problem and were unable to solve it. It wasn't until a ten year old girl tried that us humans were successful!
"It only took them about nine minutes on average, though, to figure out that a little bit of extra water could do the trick. At this point the orang-utans began taking mouthfuls of water from their drink dispenser and spitting the liquid into the tube, a trick that elevated the peanuts to an accessible point."
to some of u who have doubts abt it can click on the given link and read further what's all about. have an insight by learning whats going on around u. studies have been conducted on orangutans behaviour and intelligence.
Yeah, i would have never spit water into the tube, i would have turned it over if it wasn't glued down, or broke the damn tube to get the peanut. But that monkey is smart nonetheless, she knew the peanut would float.
We must save these magnificent apes from extinction inthe wild...! Please visit the Sumatran Orangutan Society and BOS UK websites to see how you can help!
What is significant about this is this is not predefined behaviour, they were not taught to put water in the tube, this is a species that is able to conciously solve a problem and learn from those actions. They are the perfect example of primate intelligence, completely voiding the idea that the step from primate to intelligence is a massive leap, our intelligence came by evolution.
Hence this study being conducted by the Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology.
@ecb46
probably victims to animal testing.

@Boxman29312 If it's possible to dump the cylinder's content, then why wouldn't it just have done that to get the peanut?

huh guess an orangutan is smarter then me i wouldn't of thought of that
