November, 2010 Rep. Akin said that the Pilgrims came here in 1620 to escape socialism. He said they had tried it and knew "it was unBiblical." Check out ThinkProgress for the posting. I hope someone puts it up here.
I think Akin's point is being missed. The point is that there is still a large percentage of the population that feels they are capable of taking care of themselves without govt. welfare. It seems like a disingenuous distraction to drift off topic to suggest that there was any implied racial suggestion.
There is also a large percentage of the population that believes in Angels.... that does not mean tat Angels empirically exist. In fact, a large portion of the population believes that the medical care in the US is the best in the world and that no citizen enjoys more in life than Americans do. Given that, they are more correct about the Angel thing.... BTW, a 'large percentage' is still not the majority of the population....
To use a health care metaphor. I think everyone agrees there needs to be reform. The question is to we give the cancer patient a pain killer (vast sums of tax payer money) or do we remove the tumor (tort reform, patient billing reform, incentives for healthy lifestyles, etc.)
I think that the private insurance co's are the tumor. So yes, remove them. They had their chance and blew it... I spend $1.00 in halthcare costs, my ins company takes .20 - .30 on average in 'Admin cost', plus a return to investors.... This is a HUGE waste!
you should search for another plan. Based on your #'s your ins. carrier is making better than 20 - 30% profit. The industry average is 3.3%. As a comparison restaurants make 7.5, network and comm. almost 17, and beverages over 20. I know you work for the ins co. blah blah blah.
I think Akin's point is being missed. The point is that there is still a large percentage of the population that feels they are capable of taking care of themselves without govt. welfare. It seems like a disingenuous distraction to drift off topic to suggest that there was any implied racial suggestion.
It clear that when people say welfare the first thing that pop into their minds are black people, polls have been done showing this is how you guys think. Even when more white people are on it, and only 1.7 % of America is one in the first place .
To make a point about this Us/Them mentallity, I'll make an assumption that when you say "you guys" you are speaking of conservatives, and than I will ask if the poll you cite included only conservatives. But back to my initial point... it still holds true and the little poll you bring up has no relevance unless your point is a that we need to cut back on welfare not enlarge it. In which case I wholeheartedly agree.
I'm not sure why you want a discussion about economic philosophy to be centered on race. A persons color has nothing to do with this. I think welfare is a necessary bridge during tough times. Under normal conditions I don't feel it is the govt's place to give me things I can work hard to get on my own... like health care.
Your taxes can pay for healthcare OR another aircraft carrier. We waste more than half our treasure on the military. This is simply unsustainable, and it's the elephant in the room!
I don't know your numbers but what you are saying is we spend $1,078,327,000,000 (yes, thats quadrillion) per year on the military. Even if your #'s are not spot on... I am with you we need to spend less on military, less on foreign aid (this includes all money sent overseas) less internally, less, less, less. Its time we showed some sort of a learning curve.
I think my fast and loose budget numbers were meant to reflect a general trend in wasteful spending that includes such 'black holes' as NASA, the intelligence budgets and other extracurricular adventures that seem to result in a determent for the citizens. I believe if you include those as part of the 'military budget' my numbers may not seem to far off....
But if you think the Government should be 'starved' which is a Laffer-esque way of 'killing the beast' why even stay?
And under this plan you can keep your own provider . So what is the issue . Just hope you don't get turned down if you get sick and need help like so many others .
How do you reconcile the giant inequity between "donor" states and "beneficiary" states?
Liberal states like New York, California and Illinois contribute MORE in federal taxes than they get back.
Just one red state, ONE (Texas), pays more in federal taxes than it receives back in spending.
The myth of liberals on welfare is just that...a myth. The truth is that Republicans are deathly afraid the gravy train they've been riding will suddenly come to a screeching halt!
These people are trying to shutdown all civil debate and discourse concerning health care or anything that's not in corporate financial interests.
This isn't honest exercise of free speech; it is meant to intimidate, disrupt and stop the free speech of others and end an important public dialogue. It is harassment.
The GOP should just replace their symbol of the Elephant with a PLOT OF ASTROTURF.
Because these people have been told LIE after LIE after Lie by this administration and are FED UP with it. Stop Lying to us and stop spending Trillions on stupid bills like this, Cap and tax, and Cah for Clunkers. Stop bailing out Banks and corporations!
If you want to come & offer constructive criticism in a respectful way - WELCOME.
But now we have mobs coming just to be rude, obnoxious, disorderly, disruptive, & intent on starting fist fights.
Now people are being arrested for these fist fights outside the Town Meeting.
My prediction - before long someone will be killed & these meetings will have to be called off -- all because of the mob mentality -- which has resulted in "lynchings" in the past.
I respectfully disagree with that. It's only made to look like a mob with people getting loud and pushing AFTER the speekers start avoiding questions. Or worse yet lieing about known facts. Plus it dosnt help anything when they start locking people out of these so called public meetings. When they put suger on shit and tell people it's candy for some reason they get pissed........ And the people have had enough of being treated like that.
there wa never any violence until Acorn/SEIU THUGS starting showing up and screaming "Sit The F### down!" like at the Rally in Tampa. They kept everyone against the Health care bill waiting outside in the heat and let the Union Thugs in through the back door to sit in seats in the first 3 rows. The Other Side is the one that is busing people in, Of course we are pissed. You would be too.
Damn skippy I would be pissed. My comment was was a reply for a comment that was taken down. I cant stand these Obama brown shirts "ACORN" it's no wonder their group it named after nuts. I am posting a no trespassing sign in my front yard that reads "No Trespassing ACORN not allowed violators will be arrested and prosecuted" If you look there is a vid on yt with ACORN telling the police to get after people for talking and the police do as they are told.
You have to worry about a crowd that applause and laughs at the mentioning of 'lynching'. They are either mindless sheep who applaud for no reason, they are violent hillbillies, or they have no sense of right and wrong. Lynchings are something that shouldn't even be joked about.
you tube deleting my comments again. Listen to your speaker of the house, calling folks like myself nazi's because we don't back her bill. Now who is preaching the hate, the top of the dem party.
On the bright side, the more the GOP embraces HATE as their "party line" , the more decent conservative folks, including those with values genuinely founded in Christianity, will reject them:)
Ah, Rightard humor...it's about as funny as a turd in a punch bowl.
Just the thought of lynching democratically elected representatives makes these half-wit neanderthals howl with glee! Kinda reminds me of McCain's gorilla rape joke or Ann Coulter's hilarious faggot remarks.
Akin should've told some fart jokes...he could've brought the house down!
Hey, why am I not surprised that these scumbag conservatives are laughing and cheering at someone getting lynched? Conservatives are truly the scum of the earth.
These are FAKE protests by ignorant people, who are being USED. Such people are easily led, and they easily fall into mob-thinking, including lynching. My congressman was greeted with a professional-looking sign depicting him as a devil. My congressman has devoted his life to working for the people. He is honest and honorable. The "protester" didn't make that sign. These people are being manipulated. It is not a "grassroots movement" in any way. These people are unknowing pawns in a game.
It was republicans who fought against slavery too, but that was 150 years ago. Today, 100% of the KKK is republican. My, how times have changed. One thing for sure that hasn't changed is the south. They are still racists, bigots and haters and always will be.
I've spent time in the north and the south, and I can tell you that I have met just as many bigoted and prejudice people in both places.
BTW, you should know that the first grand wizard of the KKK was honored at the 1868 Democratic National Convention, no Democrats voted for the 14th Amendment to grant citizenship to former slaves and, to this day, the party website ignores those decades of racism!!
You are right, there are folks all over the world that are racist. But it takes a progressive party to wash away the stain on OUR COUNTRY that is racism, and the GOP is not it.
The Klan is not entirely, or even mostly, Republican. They consider Republicans to be too liberal and prefer Ron Paul. Less militant racist groups like the CCC (Conservative Citizens Council) and the Minutemen tend to be Republican, though.
I am a black man and I have to say that was so uncomfortable to hear, I felt my spine tingle. Just think I am actually experiencing some of the same exact hatred that my parents endured in the MLK era. I can't believe it's 2009 and this behaviour is increasing instead of getting better. I'm the same species as the people in that room except for the color of my skin. My fellow humans this is what hurts us in our souls and yet we still love you as our brothers and sisters.
@iNavi People are bitter because they view the healthcare bill as welfare for blacks, the poor, and hispanics who are lazy and don't want to work. Also, it is viewed as taking money from hard working white people and giving to federally protected minorities. This is why opposition is bringing up states rights, birther movement, and the socialist card against Obama.
THIS is the kind of CRAP that makes Black people despise white folks. Look at how the audience CLAPPED when he talked about lynching democratic officials.
I don't know what is worse -- him saying it, or all the "real Americans" in the audience applauding it. There really is nothing more depraved in this world than the GOP.
