  • Wow I never realized it takes so much preparation...it looks beautiful!

  • that's very... white...

a little too white for me, why bother painting the back of your neck? no one would even bother what it looks like....

  • @suiseiseki2007 The collar the kimono is actually worn so it dips down and exposes the neck. The nape of the neck is considered very attractive.

  • Her lips looked so dry before she put the red lip gloss on T-T.. I just wanted to give her some water

  • It doesn't show what exactually she's putting on.

  • The uncolored patch on their necks was considered a sort of turn-on to men, much like a slit on western woman's skirt.

  • why do they leave the bit at the back of their necks un-white? is there a reason? anyone know i've always wanted to know :)

  • Believe it or not, in Japan having crooked teeth is considered attractive. In the western world, yes, her teeth aren't considered attractive or pretty, but in Japan, your teeth might be the ones considered strange.

  • I want to be a Geisha. But I'm American. FML.

  • @smartcookie525 there have been examples of americans becoming geisha before. i think it would just depend on how committed you are to being a geisha.

  • Truly an artform.

  • Geisha means artist.

  • her teeth aren't really that bad, if she wouldn't brush them they would've dropped from her mouth before she was 15. braces just are a relatively new thing, and this documentary piece doesn't seem to be very new. i'm also pretty convinced that it also costs some amount of money to get them.

  • How wonderful to see you woman actually look like a woman nowadays

  • Anyone who thinks that geishas are prostitutes is very ignorant. The misconception comes from WWII where American GIs frequented prostitutes that called themselves "Geesha girls" which they interpreted as "geisha".

  • what incredibly beautiful eyes <3

  • so smooth... its so beautiful~

  • Do they brush their teeth? O.O

  • BTW in japan crooked teeth is considered cute. "Yaeba"

  • @Skaulitz267 heh hate to be a troll but that wasnt the white paint-- it was this expensive moisturizer that was made from nightingale droppings. im pretty sure at least ;)

  • @bullet0tears yep,nightingale droppings

  • Fuck her teeth man, she's beautiful

  • I never understand why the media blames celebrities and models everyone famous for making teenagers and people feel insecure about their appearance. all i 've seen is 'look at her teeth' why don't people stop being so god damn judgemental. no-one is perfect i bet half the people who have criticized her have something that other people probably think 'ew' about them

  • In the Memoir of a Geisha, it said that the "white paint" was once bird poop. :)

  • good god ever heard of braces??

  • Who cares about her teeth? Pay attention to how she does the makeup.

  • her teeth!!!

  • :) jojobeautyadvice.blogspot

  • Ok people stop saying things about her teeth we know there not pretty but hey she's just here to show how geisha makeup is done ok so yea watch the video

  • She looks like a rat.

  • I wonder if that white makeup is commercially available...

  • Beautiful

  • Wow she have some really nice teeth :B

  • beautiful

  • is that paint or makeupe?

  • there's just something odd about not colouring in the full lip, I'm so meticulous about that. but no doubt, the lips make the geisha face.

  • Geisha makeup is kidna creepy and weird while its being applied. But SO beautiful when its finished. ^_^

  • she does the eye-brows wrong, they should be done with a matchstick that has just be blown out that way she can get a greyish colour

  • @japanesegirl1508 thats what I was thinking. And dont they do the eyebrows last? Or maybe that jusr depends on a Geisha.

  • @japanesegirl1508

You do realize this is an ACTUAL maiko, right? She does her eyebrows perfectly fine. Go to Flickr and search the words maiko and you will see that all maiko use red and pink penciling for their eyebrows. I don't think you know as much as you think you do, honey.

  • @NicolaAlexandrovna

oh yeh? a real maiko would never be allowed to put a video on utube. shes a fake one

  • @japanesegirl1508

Isn't it obvious that a film crew is making this video and not the maiko herself? SHE didn't film this or upload anything at all to youtube. If you perhaps bothered to read the description of the video you would see "JAPAN THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS by Alan Macfarlane". You absolute twit.

  • wow, she gets the make-up so close to her eye!

  • Is a senior maiko ^-^

  • @sacatansacatun How much for you my lady :)

  • @indoom666 Muchas gracias precioso :D

  • @DarkangelKat all it is is just white powder mixed with water haha you could use baby powder if you wanted :)

  • Oh my God, her teeth!

  • BAKERATTA!!

  • talk bout full coverage!

  • Fascinating. Even with the background noise, it had a weirdly intimate feel to it..? Like I was watching her through her bedroom window or something.

  • geishas seem to have wonderful skin it must be that face painting!!! O.o and she is beautiful

  • This was really cool, but the camera work .. left a lot to be desired. Haha. Good video anyway! :D

  • That red was stunning. Absolutely facinating. Only thing I didn't like was all the talking the camera guys did!!!!

  • I just watched Memoirs of Geisha and they didn't have any of the hairstyle DID like this maiko. I wonder why??

PS: i like the hairstyles in the movie better though...

  • @ladida49. Thank you for telling me because I have always wondered why they do that. They are so different than us.

Americans: Fake tans to have darker skin Tight and short clothing

Geishas: White out faces Long and flowing dresses

I laugh at the difference sometimes.

  • Can i ask what products you are using? What are you putting on your face before the white and what specifically is the "white" makeup made of, is it a specific product or do you make your own recipe

  • @extremedj998 they use Rice powder. Google search it :)

  • Why do they white out their faces?

  • @elise1594 The white face makeup resembles the traditional Japanese standard of beauty, which is pale, pale, pale skin. Also, back when the teahouses were lit with candles and lanterns, the bright white makeup made the geisha seem even more mysterious and and beautiful. :)

  • She is beautiful :)

  • She has beautiful eyes

  • While very CULTURALLY different from western society... still beautiful. It was not socially unacceptable to be Geisha. I have a lot of respect for these women. Wonderfully beautiful woman.

  • You know at the beginning when she appears to be putting nothing on her face? Well it's actually wax. An interesting little fact about how to apply geisha makeup and keep it in place.

  • @barrborra35 If you were smart you would realize that geisha only sleep with one man her entire life, her Dana. So no not a prostitute. Get your facts straight or shut up.

  • @CydneyCyclopse This isn't really true either, but you're right, proper geisha are certainly not prostitutes.

  • @CydneyCyclopse It's a form of prostitution if your selling your body to someone. Yes, your not having random sex with all these people but your still selling yourself out to the highest bidder. Get your facts right!

  • @GaaraOnline

They no longer have sex with clients AT ALL. Firstly because it's illegal, and secondly because maiko range between the ages of 15-21, making it doubly illegal. This woman, nor any other maiko or geiko of this time period, are prostitutes. Period.

  • @CydneyCyclopse Actuality she can sleep with up to 2 men When she Become a full Geisha While giving her mizuage away and after that here Dana.

Of cores here the man she loses here virginity to could be come here Dana later but Sum times it's a completely other man.

But no a Geisha is no prostitute she is an artist who specializes in dance, music, and song

  • @FUKNBTCH @FUKNBTCH Thank you for agreeing, people think that just because they sleep with a man for a sum of money that they are whores,. Let's think about it this way; you are a stay at home wife, you please your man in ANYWAY you can, being cleaning, sex, cooking, or anything. He brings home money, which buys you nice things, a roof over your head and basically anything you want. Are you a whore? That pretty much EXACTLY what a geisha does, but people are quick to judge with out thinking.

  • Comment removed

  • @CydneyCyclopse According to Geisha of Gion by Mineko Iwasaki, there were no Dana's or mizuage's in the Geiko culture. She was on of the most popular geisha's of her time and her book is very revealing.

  • @CydneyCyclopse STUPID! its speeled Danna not Dana. Ur fucking stupid. no ur fucking facts!

  • @ddogluverful *Spelled

  • @ddogluverful spelled know it's you're

  • @barrborra35 Obviously, you know nothing of geisha society. Next time, think twice before spewing ignorant garbage.

  • *beautiful

  • Geishas used to b men b4 they were called off to war then the women took over, they are still very brautyful

  • i wonder where to get or how to make the white paint she is using.

  • @DarkangelKat want a link? i mean, it's pricey. but there is this place that sells it.. (and other things. i buy from them all the time .c:)

  • @LatinCutie86 please! ~:D

  • @DarkangelKat posted on your channel. (youtube wouldnt let me post it on here for some reason. have fun, let me know how it works out! ^-^)

  • @LatinCutie86 cld i hav the link plz? as long as its in pounds

  • @japanesegirl1508 I can't make it in pounds, but they do ship worldwide.

  • @japanesegirl1508 it's on your channel.

  • @DarkangelKat A good place to look is a local halloween store. Most of them sell the stark white makeup in little sets that include the white makeup, red and black. All 3 colors can be used to make the makeup style Geisha use.

  • @DarkangelKat "either a rice-flour powder or a lead-based powder mixed with water into a thin paste"

  • Oh my gosh she is just cute as a button! :-D

  • This is Awesome!

  • ok your camera man suck!I wanna see how you do your eyes and he is showing me your neck i wanna see how you do your lips and he shows me your eyes...whatever...

  • In Japan, they actually used nightingale droppings in their cream to put on their face, it's actually less digusting than you think

  • I'm so glad I'm not the only one who finds this so interesting to just watch them do their makeup.

  • ASMR trigger anyone?

  • I want her foundation brush or paint brush!!!!

  • What is it that she's putting on her face at the very beginning? Is it some sort of primer or is she just massaging her face?

  • Gorgeous!

  • wonderful thank you soo much :)

  • I enjoy watching her, but the camera man was an idiot, and the ppl in the backround needed to STFU!!!!

  • AMAZING

  • i loved this video!!! what a beautiful art!!! and i loved how she put a lot into it and she is really concentrated and makes it very delicately! <3

  • I wish i could just watch with out that brit chatting away in the back ground.

  • i like it :D i love this culture n.n

  • I could just watch this all day. mesmerizing beauty, totally hypnotic.

  • I dont really know what's on those women but they freak me out but at the same time makes me like woah what a beautiful piece of art, id love to marry one of those sexy babes

  • doea the lotion keep it from pulling her skin when she moves

  • WOW. THIS IS A LOT OF WORK. I REALLY ADMIRE THE GEISHA GIRLS. THEY PUT A LOT OF EFFORT INTO THIS :-)

  • Seeing this woman barefaced, you wouldn't really call her a beauty. But something about her features is quite striking - like she stepped out from the past.

  • actually a maiko, my mistake

  • long eyebrows means she's a geisha :D but is must be a special occasion or something.

  • it would be a bitch to wash off!

  • What beautiful art! I love how she used the pink pigment as if her eyes where blushing, and the crimson looked like little winged eyelash tips.

Thank you so much for uploading this video. I feel so privileged to see such an ancient ritual from the near opposite side of the world.

  • Could someone tell me what being a Geisha entails? I hear some people say that these women are prostitutes but I know that's not entirely accurate. Are these women simply beautiful people to have dinner with? Is it more ceremonial than that?

  • @DillonRHall They are certainly not prostitutes. That was something made up by Americans. To entertain us Westerners. They are amazing companions, experts in our everyday tasks, pretty much...everything for our entertainment. But not prostitutes.

  • @DillonRHall It's basically like an escort without sex. They are supposed to be "perfect" women. There are some other modern jobs in Japan that basically are the same as a geishas: "hosts". There are even male hosts who serve females (male geishas--in a way). People can see hosts at host clubs (wiki host clubs for more info).

  • GEORGIOUS !!!!!!! thanx u for shareing such a gracefull work of art with us.......

  • beautiful *-*

  • This woman is most deffinately beautiful.

  • I love the lip stuff its so preety( i know im weird) TT

  • Even a normal streetwalker witch is wearing a kimono and has a geisha make up could call herself a geisha these days. It takes a lifetime to become a geisha.

  • @YellowFruitCandy those are geisha girls, real geisha hate them

  • Utsukushii ^-^

  • Beautiful ^-^

  • Definitely in modern Japan is renowned for its technology and animation, but these characters along with Sumo wrestlers in Japan are a mysterious and full of ancient traditions from more than 200 years, perhaps, never reach us Westerners understand.

    Arigato, Kombawa shita mata-a ...

  • The charm, mystery and beauty goes hand in hand with these women, who is credited with years of culture and education and yes, even magic.

The spell of seduction, without reaching prostitution, or the art of acting, without exaggeration, are part of everyday life of these creatures, considered almost mythological in appearance and untouchable by their condition.

  • Wow.

  • this is so nice to see, anyways what are those white thing made of? the white liquid that she is putting in her neck

  • tiene los dientes feos :s

  • this video could use some kind of music in the background..

  • stunning. <3

  • WOW ! Its Amazing ! I love the geiko make up so very much. I´m so interestet about Maikos & Geikos ! I read the book : " The real story about a Geisha"

In german: "Die wahre Geschichte der Geisha" from Mineko Iwasaki .

She was one of the famouse geishas in Gion Kobu.

Sorry my english isn´t realy good.. I´m german :)

  • @EinAllesFreak your english is better than most people i know, haha.

  • thumbs up if you noticed how annoying the camera mans voice was after a while....

  • ugh, i wish i could put makeup on myself like that *-*

  • What did she putting on her skin before 1:25? Or she just massage her skin?

  • @watering76 it's probably some sort of primer, so the makeup 'sits' better or something. i don't know the exact word haha

  • @AquaGirl11354 geishas are Japanese women who are entertainers. they are NOT hookers. it is a very ancient and special art

  • @ShePaintsMusic In Japan, crooked teeth, are considered FREAKING **ADORABLE**, which they are on females. She is super cute, and the teeth make her even cuter.

  • She looks a bit scary there right after she paints her whole face white. But the end result is beautiful!

  • No, they used artificially made make-up now with chemicals that are safe for their skin.

  • does anyone know if the geisha still use the old make - up mixture, which is bird excrement (I know gross, but that was how they got the perfect white color)?

  • @shadowcat75 no. The nightingale dropping face mask is entirely different then the white foundation she is putting on her face. Nightingale droppings is a common ingrident in gentle face exfoliants, among other things which has its origins in early asia, but is obviously thus never used in makeup.

  • I like the way she did her eyes especially

  • Breathtaking and quite elegant way of putting on make-up.

I wasn't bothered by her teeth, I actually like it natural.

  • my goodness she is pretty

  • at the beginning is she wiping oil from her face?? because that's kinda what it looks like :/

  • @J3anie I think she's rubbing a sort of wax that is warmed up by her hands onto her face as a sort of "primer" for the white makeup.

  • @Jrocklullaby oh ok thanks :3

  • @J3anie no, it is a waxy substance that they have to use before-hand or else the makeup will not go on correctly.

  • i actually read that when this art first started the white powder they used was a mixture of a wheat substance and bird dung. then it was switched to lead and mercury which is banned since its toxic. now they have their own face powder brands that they sell for Geishas. i saw a website all in Japanese but it won't allow me to post it. you can Google it. its called Neri- Oshiroi

  • am i the only who noticed she only painted half of her top lip?

  • @mariantv2 They do that for a reason. There are 6 general stages of Geisha: Shikomi (just learning), Minarai (learning and applying skills), Ichi/Ni/San nin Mae Maiko (Geiko in training), and then finally, Geiko. Whichever stage they are in determines how they paint their lips. Minarai paint only half their bottom lip, to show they are still a "baby", and as they progress, they paint a little more. I would guess that the girl in this video is either a Ni Nin Mae or San Nin Mae Maiko.

  • @mariantv2

youre right, smaller lips had always been some kind of a geisha beauty standart, as far as i know

Because the white face paint cuases a weird illustion, if she'll paint all over her lips thay will

    apper heavy and "over done"

  • Just because they're straight and pearly white doesn't mean they're healthy. Take my sister for example, perfect smile...blinding white straight teeth yet still has cavities and might have to get a root canal. That's like saying skinny is healthy, which isn't always the case. Anyways, that's besides the point I find this really amazing to watch :)

  • Fascinating. Thank you for posting.

  • who are any of you to judge this woman? This woman from another country graced us with her art. If you have any negative opinions keep them to yourselves and go watch something else. If you haven't noticed there is an "x" button that you can click on at any time. The Geisha make-up techniques are a very skillful elegant art that used to be kept secret generations ago. If anything we should be praising her & thanking her for showing them to us.

  • @enamorate7 You should learn to just ignore stupid people sometimes. Some folks just have no idea how ignorant, simpleminded and just plain STUPID they sound. Pitty that person... shake your head... and just thank God that you aren't dumb like that.

  • @MadeInDC1983 Amen.

  • ugly teeth or not, they get paid a decent amount to do what they do!!!

  • the way she put stuff on her face was very aggressive

  • Past Geisha use to color there teeth black!! what does it matter if hers are crooked!

  • @JozieJ101 no, Tayu did that & still do.

  • @YukioSnowoBloom still nothing worng with her teeth :)

  • Comment removed

  • can't we just appreciate that wonderful art instead of being racists

I won't deny it when I was a kid I was a racist but there was a point that my eyes grew open, seeing how beautiful things are...how wonderful the art is!

physical appearance are just a display that if broken you'll see whether inside is a clear water or a mud

(don't kill me, I'm just a first year high school!! |OoO|)

  • the filming of this video was utter shite. whoever the camera man was, is absolutely awful, no stability, no good shots at all! but i loved the purpose of this video anyway, the girl is beautiful. :)

  • Thats amazing, looks really great:

Thank you so much for this vid :D

  • so amazing. and thinking that has become so trite. =/

  • so what about her teeth...

i bet she has better skin than most of us lol.

it's so smooth and no bumps show through the white paste!

  • This video's addicting, this is probably the millionth time I've watched this

  • How can I get this white make-up by my self?

    Iäm from Europe - sweden

  • she does her brows better than most ppl iknow thats sad

  • geisha's should be professional make up artists....!!!

  • Rice flour mixed with water makest he face paint

  • Japan needs your help. Please watch this video.
