Key has yet to make an anime that DOESN'T involve some sort of fantasy element to it. If you didn't expect the Orbs of Happiness to play any major part in the story, then you fail. Horribly.
I think the anime would've been better if they'd left Nagisa dead, but kept Ushio alive..... Nagisa was one of my favorite characters, so it's not like I WANT her dead.... but I think the series would've made more sense... ish..

I actually searched for the piano music just to hear it agian, and it brought back such a feeling of overwhelming nistalgia. I always seem to forget about this true jem of a show, but some how it always finds a way to worm itself deeper and back into my heart. <3

@XJerJerX1 Yeah go watch After Story if you haven't yet. Clannad is nothing compared to After Story in terms of how powerful (emotionally) it is. Clannad 1st season = very good anime but didn't quite have the push it needed to make it stand out as much as it should. 2nd half of After Story = One of the most tragic animes I've ever seen(at least until the ending..), and really is what makes Clannad so good.
The closest I came to crying was Ushio's death. That little girl made all of After Story worth watching for me and to watch those cute little arms fall limp...fuck.
i regret watching this anime. watching is like having a very close friend who you spent all ur time with, die. you really get attached to the characters. when they killed off nagisa it was so painful. this is not the problem. the problem is they spend 5 more episodes to savor the sadness, then crap out a divine intervention happy ending. gave me the jitters the day after i went back to work.
it had SO much potential to be one of the best animes, but they had to fck up the ending..

@TheAwesomenessgirl yes i watched it all. no he wasnt daydreaming. there were little orbs of light that were used by the other ushio from the other world to travel tomoya to a dimension where nagisa and ushio didnt die. it was just a very cheap copped out by some divine miracle, ending.

The emotional impact of the event was enough, if they didn't reverse it by the end (and quite honestly they don't lead on that they will, at all) then the anime would end on a shitty note. It'd make every previous episode useless and pointless. Especially since without "divine intervention" Ushio also would have died, and Tomoya is very likely to have died too. Wow..great ending, right?...psh.

@bearruler that ending is the TRUE ending of the visual novel, which came years before the anime. Those of us who played the visual novel didn't mind it at all because we KNEW it was coming. We even became attached to that ending, had they not used the ending that they used and made their own original ending.....well, let's just say hell would have broken lose hahaha.

If only it ended in episode 20, before Ushio gets sick, it would have been so much better. They also could have given Kyou a shot, since she was Ushio's teacher and probably still loved Tomoya. Why Key Animation? You had great potential in your hands and wasted it with a horrible ending. WHY?!

@bearruler I think you're missing the multidimensional aspect. And I believe the happy ending is there for us. There is a trend to make stories more "real" which means no happy ending. Either characters die or the goal is not reached. But Clannad gives us both. It rips our hearts out and makes us cry "Not this, not this, why/how would you do that to him? But in the end it shows us the multiple dimensions, that maybe he experienced so much pain in order to appreciate everything .

Also, Nagisa ruined Clannad pretty much. Why was Nagisa chosen? I don't know. I guess Tomoya is stupider than he looks. Seriously, any of the girls would've been better than that cockroach (see antennae protruding from Nagisa's head). I will admit that I bawled like a fucking baby when Nagisa and Ushio died, and this is the only show to make me do that. I loved it when I first saw it. Then I thought about it and went, "...I've fucking seen this before!"

This Anime was made from the Clannad visual novel. Nagisa in it was the main character and only one that lead to after story arc so naturally to tell the whole story she must have been chosen.
Clannad was actually about the other world that was dying away, that girl that became part of it could send him through time because she was in another world. If anything, this Anime is very deep and it's characters too.
Clannad is flawless. Its known far and wide as a masterpiece. Every second of the composed music, every spoken word, colors and animation. From laughing to crying. The story has similar elements of 90% of anime, no shit. Nobody pulls it off like Key, not even close. I went on 300 missons with my buddy in iraq and when he died I didnt shed a tear. this show had me bawling like a child. Invoke emotion. Its what key does, reguardless of who you are. Nothing even comes close to clannad.

It uses the same plot that we've all seen a hundred times before. I give it a 7/10 at least, because it pulled it off better than most other shows can, though.

After watching so many animes, I honestly recommend this one to anybody who loves anime no matter what genre they watch. It's a perfect blend of comedy, drama, and action they only Key can do.
This anime is truly AMAZING! I think that it is very similar to AIR so i LOVE it! =3 AIR is just as good as clannad in EVERY way i LOVE the openings for both AIR and Clannad
clannad after stroy is really sad i finished watching it along time ago but i cant stop thinking about it. when i finished watching the series i was depressed for 2 weeks and it was not good. i was emotional over every thing. i time my girlfriend made me fried eggs and she messed up i cried over it. it was really sad and pathetic!!!
Maybe you should try the visual novel too, its very good and makes you get the series even more, you will see that its not sad at all~ Well, some arcs are tho~ But its like one of the best visual novels i have ever read~ ^^

Watching this opening makes me sad because it reminds me of the opening to Air TV (such a sad show ;_; Key likes to make their anime really sad). How they did the thing with the girls' silhouettes turning into the sky is just like what they did in the Air TV opening.
it made me really happy that fuu-chans sister got to see her. or at least feel her there. but i finished both seasons last night and it sucks that no one remembers seeing her at school
That didn't get me so much as when Sanae forgot her; some movies have brought me to tears before, but Clannad was the first TV show to make me tear up, and that scene was the first ANYTHING fictional to make me sob.
i cried some during the first season too but i cried ALOT more during the 2nd season.. i started to hate the anime when i found out that Nagisa passed away... but i continued to watch it and im uper happy that it had a good ending ^_^
Episode 16 of Clannad: After Story made me cry and the effects didn't wear off until 24. That's the first time I've ever really "cried" to something emotionally EVER. The effects only wore off on episode 24 due to SPOILERS. Clannad got me close to tears with Kotomi's story but Clannad: After Story is the first thing that could ever really do it for me. That's what makes it one of my favorite shows.

@shackkleice sorry for alte reply, If Tomoya never meant Nagasi he thought she wouldnt have died and had a better life. 2 he wasnt dreaming, period. he wa either in shock or was given another chance by the chance thing ( if u watched in detail u would know of the old scholl president and her story, it may also relate to that )

Clannad is a beautiful Anime.
After Story simply is really sad sometimes...
I'm a guy that usually don't cry during sad moments, but hell, when i watched the sad moments in Clannad After Story i could barely hold my tears!

@GMTienchi "It is 10 min long because the bitrate makes the video at start looking very good and while going to the end the image looks worse and worse, so the rest is black screen so it evens out the bitrate meaning that the start is longer and therefore the best quality remains even while Youtube processes it, it can't really be seen until uploaded to Youtube. Also, Nagisa ruined Clannad pretty much. Why was Nagisa chosen? I don't know. I guess Tomoya is stupider than he looks. Seriously, any of the girls would've been better than that cockroach (see antennae protruding from Nagisa's head). I will admit that I bawled like a fucking baby when Nagisa and Ushio died, and this is the only show to make me do that. I loved it when I first saw it. Then I thought about it and went, "...I've fucking seen this before!"

This Anime was made from the Clannad visual novel. Nagisa in it was the main character and only one that lead to after story arc so naturally to tell the whole story she must have been chosen.
Clannad was actually about the other world that was dying away, that girl that became part of it could send him through time because she was in another world. If anything, this Anime is very deep and it's characters too.

Clannad is flawless. Its known far and wide as a masterpiece. Every second of the composed music, every spoken word, colors and animation. From laughing to crying. The story has similar elements of 90% of anime, no shit. Nobody pulls it off like Key, not even close. I went on 300 missons with my buddy in iraq and when he died I didnt shed a tear. this show had me bawling like a child. Invoke emotion. Its what key does, reguardless of who you are. Nothing even comes close to clannad.

Yes. I watched it all, and it was okay. It uses the same characters as every other harem.

Main Character Dies - Check
It uses the same plot that we've all seen a hundred times before. I give it a 7/10 at least, because it pulled it off better than most other shows can, though.

clannad after stroy is really sad i finished watching it along time ago but i cant stop thinking about it. when i finished watching the series i was depressed for 2 weeks and it was not good. i was emotional over every thing. i time my girlfriend made me fried eggs and she messed up i cried over it. it was really sad and pathetic!!!

Maybe you should try the visual novel too, its very good and makes you get the series even more, you will see that its not sad at all~ Well, some arcs are tho~ But its like one of the best visual novels i have ever read~ ^^

Watching this opening makes me sad because it reminds me of the opening to Air TV (such a sad show ;_; Key likes to make their anime really sad). How they did the thing with the girls' silhouettes turning into the sky is just like what they did in the Air TV opening.

That didn't get me so much as when Sanae forgot her; some movies have brought me to tears before, but Clannad was the first TV show to make me tear up, and that scene was the first ANYTHING fictional to make me sob.

i cried some during the first season too but i cried ALOT more during the 2nd season.. i started to hate the anime when i found out that Nagisa passed away... but i continued to watch it and im uper happy that it had a good ending ^_^

Episode 16 of Clannad: After Story made me cry and the effects didn't wear off until 24. That's the first time I've ever really "cried" to something emotionally EVER. The effects only wore off on episode 24 due to SPOILERS. Clannad got me close to tears with Kotomi's story but Clannad: After Story is the first thing that could ever really do it for me. That's what makes it one of my favorite shows.
