I never thought I'd come across a concept album that I'd come to love as much as Pink Floyd's "The Wall", but I stand corrected. Pink Floyd and The Decemberists are two completely different bands, in both lyrics and sound, but there is one thing they both share in excellency: they're damn good storytellers. These guys have made the classics in my book.
My English teacher played this entire album from start to finish in class... our job is to analyze it. Really glad he had us do it. This is one of my favorite albums now :)
Listened to the whole thing yesterday cause a friend of mine wanted me to. Its good. I started drawing stuff like crazy while listening to it. took about an hour.
This isn't so much a concept album as one massive, fantastic and beatiful story. It's like a kids bedtime tale but for adults. I think it's amazing. The album is the most complete and cohesive piece of music I've heard in ages. Hazards of Love is fantastic. What a great story.
I wish that Genesis had made their "rock opera" come to life like they wanted to. :/ The songs are still beautiful from that album (especially Lilywhite Lilith), but this just has no equal. Mmmm. The beautiful melancholy. A Romeo and Juliet set in the deepest palace of fantasy.
It's a lyrical and musical masterpiece that cannot be broken down into tracks. I'd call that a concept album. Either way it is inspirational brilliance.
I just saw these guys this weekend in Chicago at Northwestern University for free. They played this whole album through without stopping, it was amazing!
I'm sorry, but The Hazards of Love is just a terrible, terrible album by The Decemberists. I have nothing but praise for this band believe me, but this album is just such a plunge. I don't understand what went wrong. Just before this release we had gotten wonderful Always The Bridesmaid. Those six tracks alone are just so much superior to anything to be found in Hazards of Love. And of course look at all the past releases up to Crane Wife.Sigh.Still love Decemberists like hell, but this sucks!!
I have to completely agree with you, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE DECEMBEERISTS, but this album sucks, and its not necessarily their faults. Notice how their music went downhill after their signing up with capital records? I belive that a true fan will defend the true decemberists, and not this mainstream monster capitalism is making them (not that I have a problem with capitalism:)
@AEM123456 I believe that a true fan will support the band and encourage them to evolve further and explore the depths of their unique musical talent. I believe that only a whiny, hipster indie kid will jump ship due to one of the most mind-blowing concept albums of our time simply because it's released by a mainstream label. (Not that I have a problem with whiny, hipster indie kids. :)
Thematically, lyrically, and musically, this record is a natural fit for The Decemberists. Pipe down.
sure each song corresponds with a color in the album artwork, but the songs weren't written in accordance to the colors they were going to represent. so once again, what is the concept?
I usually think of a concept album as one that tells a story or has correlating themes. And a good way to tell is usually if the songs run together or all work together. This album tells a story, so I have to disagree with you. But you have a right to your own opinion, so I respect that. :)
A concept album is "unified by a theme, which can be instrumental, compositional, narrative, or lyrical."
All of the above, if you read the lyrics, know when the tracks end, and actually go to their live show, indicate that The Hazards of Love, without doubt, is a concept album.
My comment was concerning "Colors" by Between The Buried and Me...which cannot be considered a legitimate concept album. Definitely not in the same way that "Hazards of Love" is.
It's a concept album. All the songs tell a clear story. There's motifs from one song found in others throughout the album. The whole album is cohesive and the songs go together, it's about as close to a concept album as you can get.
this is simply one of the best albums i've heard in my lifetime. The Decemberists are storytellers, that's why i love them. the instrumentals are incredible, too
I have to be honest, I didn't "get" the album the first time around. None of the tunes jumped out at me like their previous albums. But having now taken the time to listen to it beginning to end several times, taking in the poetry and story, I completly agree with you. The lyrics are genius. The instrumentation is genius. The genre they've cobbled together for themselves is groudbreaking. I freakin' love these guys!

Best concept album I've ever heard was "Ribbons of War" by the Extraordinaires. Not famous, but AMAZING!

the decemberists are good.
but until you've listened to Colors by Between the Buried and Me, you know nothing of concept albums.

I love the Decemberists but I've got to agree with that.
Colors blew me away.

That's because Colors is a masterpiece in every sense of the word. Not that this album isn't fantastic still.

then tell me what the concept is..
colors?
sure each song corresponds with a color in the album artwork, but the songs weren't written in accordance to the colors they were going to represent. so once again, what is the concept?
thepot23 2 years ago
...it's over an hour of a coherent storyline. That's the commonly accepted definition of a concept album.

Please be more specific. Colors by BTBAM is a concept album, or Hazards of Love? Because if you mean the latter, then I agree wholeheartedly.
