  • I met Rick a couple times. What a kind and gentle soul. But he had private demons he battled.

  • i agree with top comment, but when he was with the "band" he was also the most beautiful man in the world /

  • vale rick danko, he left his mark.

  • In the key of G the second chord is a Dmin if anyone is interested.

  • So sad, disintegrate...fall apart. Being a young, full of energy guy, becoming old and lethargic. But it's great, we have videos, music, pictures...

  • I was fortunate enough to meet and talk with Rick many times-in fact he got me into a show outside the old lone star cafe in the city when I was underage! what a story that is (but I won't bore you!) I seemed to always run into him-even at the old Acme in Woodstock! He was always kind and greeted me like an old friend.I miss him a bunch , but that soul will resonate in kindness FOREVER

  • "and the sun don't shine anymore".....saddest line ever

  • Wow. This was played the exact day after I was born.

  • @daisydooker

Disregard, I read your comment out of context and was highly displeased..I read it right this time :)

  • @daisydooker

You're out of your mind..this man had more soul than you could ever imagine. Listen to him sing this in "the last waltz" which was released 20 years before this performance and see how he maintained through the years. Definite like!!

  • They say all musicians have one performance of a life time.......I think this was it!!! Rick Danko you truly out did yourself here!!! Incredible and I get chills every time I watch this video :-)

  • Wonderful thank you!

  • Rick Danko had the voice of an angel and the soul as well, wasnt meant for this world.

  • He was singing to you, the audience, when he said that he loved you and he missed you. I miss him. See you soon, Rick.

  • The Band never went in for fads or styles. JUST PURE NATURAL TALENT. RIP Ricky.

  • I think rick fused with santa in the 90's

  • @donniewilcox drugs alcohol

  • i loved this gye

  • rip my friend

  • Devastatingly beautiful. As he fades into the darkness at the end it's difficult not to feel the full force of the song, and the true tragic beauty of the man who performed it.

  • @shawntavenier i am sorry but is not as beautiful as the the last waltz. and it's sad that he is alone on that stage.

  • It is heartbreaking and healing, no matter how young or old he is, he is Rick!

  • someone said GREATEST FUCKIN SINGER ALL TIME

    i FUCKIN agree

    play it again Rick....

  • WOW...This tune will always bring me to tears, Love, and Miss Rick Danko.., thanks for the post

  • Rick had the sweetness of a child, the love of a young man

and the soul of an old man.

I know you're happy with your son now. You and Richard keep

singing beautiful songs for the BIG GUY!

All of your fans miss you. Hugs & Kisses Always!

  • I had the pleasure of hearing rick kand meeting him. he was one of the most enlightened persons I have ever come in contact with.

  • Que dios te tega en su gloria eterna Ricky, fuistes un GRANDE

  • RIP

  • Love the song. Love the man.

  • Legend.

  • He was one of the greats. This is an example of a great musician doing one of his best and most memorable songs towards the end of his life. If you piss on this guy you are nothing, and you should know it. Do something as meaningful as this before you throw stones.

  • @wilburjr Well Put........

  • you will need the jaws of life to pry this smile off my face after watching this

  • @TCminneapolis Your gunna need the clean up team to mop up the tears off my face. this video is pure beauty

  • bless this man

  • another Crazy Diamond. Don't worry folks, you'll be there soon.

  • He was an angel, no doubt.

  • @tarrera2005 Yep..he was a Crazy Angel..love him..

  • He was an angel

  • rick had a beautiful voice i feel as if i grew up with the man myself . rip rick love your vocals !

  • Voice of an Angel as far as I am concerned I love Rick no other words need to be said-he was amazing and always will be

  • best invention ever = guitar

second best invention ever = video camera

  • If Rick had a problem i'm sure his family and friends attempted to help him. His Son had died previous to him so i'm sure that took a big toll on him. His Voice and music is so missed i hope he is at peace.

  • so sad to see what Rick did to himself. Did anyone ever try to get him help?

  • This rates high, is an excellent performance.

  • I read that Rick sang on Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb! Anybody know if that's true?

Rick was just great, just great!! He finally got over his Stagefright!

  • @mattygeetarross yes Rick sang on Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb and Mother along with Levon on Roger Waters Live in Berlin in 1990.

  • Yes, this is heartbreaking.

  • I find it uncomfortable to watch. Heartbreaking.

  • He was arrested for smuggling heroin into Japan at this time. I went to see his court case in Chiba. I remember mailing the outcome to Jan Hoiberg (who still hosts the excellent Band website) via a modem from a phone box outsite the courtroom.

He had been kept in the detention centre for a while and was looking disheveled. I wondered if he had been through cold turkey.

The performance in this video is an echo of the performance at The Last Waltz, but moving in a whole different way.

  • @lexmiller Never cared much for paparazzi ,but thanks for sharing . RIP RICK

  • beautiful ... rip rick.

  • Ran in to someone not to long ago who met Rick. He said you could never meet a kinder man.

  • oh shit, Rick Danko was 'the' most soulful singer ever...

  • A testiment to a difficult life - God Bless you, Rick!

  • One of our great Canadian exports! I had the great pleasure of meeting Rick & Levon as they walked across a field from the outdoor stage in Ottawa Ontario and got to shake their hands....all I said was "thanks for the great years of making music for us"....they each smiled and said "Thanks" back .......shortly after...Rick passed away.....I'll never forget it.....because he played this song and it was amazing on a warm summer night under the stars.

  • @mcdee15 You are a lucky person, and i dont think you no just how lucky to shake there hands mcdee.Wish it was me RIP RICK

  • RIP RICK all the way from SCOTLAND UK . As you say [ it makes no difference] you will always be 1 of the top 5 vocals in the world for me, and you will never be forgotten. Bet your enjoying yourself up there in heaven now with all the other grate artists.

  • it must be hell for musicians to work so hard year after year. Just to survive 30 years must be very difficult.

I couldn't even imagine what touring would be like.

  • This is the first you tube video I've almost cried over. Man, everytime I hear this song it gets me

  • i dont know much of him, but all i keep hearing and reading is that he was the nicest most good friendly person you could ever have the pleasure of meeting. a sincere and heartfelt R.I.P. from a new admirer rob!

  • Amazing. Genius cut short, but I love you so much! It's all I can do ...

  • Fantastic! Heavenly voice and talented musician and a huge part of one of the greatest bands of all time. RIP big man!

  • Is he saying dead head street? Haha...

  • @TheOneWhoSings1 Yeah. this is from a Jerry Garcia tribute concert in Japan. I thought it was clever :)

  • sounds likes it ....dead end street was the original lyrics though.

  • yes, Dead Heads, that's who we were

  • Nice song, but he was a shell of himself in this video.

  • That's true but probably best not to say it...we all know he wasn't healthy but the man was underappreciated all his life and he was doing his best.

  • that sounds so sad

  • This is amazing.

  • I will never get to see him or Richard sing. I feel heartbroken.

I know they are up there together again...

  • saw them both..rip..great musicians

  • i miss you so much brother. but your voice always makes me smile.

  • what a drag it was to lose this one, rick could noy have been more loyal to rock and roll it is just a drag he could not over come those evil demons, most people never do it is just a daily struggle and believe me it is not easy.

  • Coyote...you are so right. The demons got both Rick and Richard' but their voices were way to heavenly not to make it to those pearly gates. I know he looks bad here' but he had been working on his health prior to his death and he looked good in '99. Sadly' the years caught up with him and he was taken from us way too early. Love you Rick and I know both you and Richard are making heavenly music together once again!

  • When Rick Danko was born, the angels sang...Rick sang harmony!

  • all the best, Rick

  • Man it is so sad to see him like this... so wasted and old... He sounds good though... Rock on.

  • never wanted to cry more so then now :( RIP Rick.

  • i could cry

  • Miss ya' Rick and Ezra!

  • Really really miss this guy.

  • Listen to The Band's original version and you will hear the greatness of Rick Danko, which is still here in 1997, but muted due to health problems. He was a happy guy. His bandmate, Richard Manuel committed suicide, but Danko was living, just unhealthily.

  • Sorry it got so rough in your last days Rick :( Beautiful Rick.

  • love they way he seems to be playing the bass part on guitar.

  • I'm diggin this!

  • I keep coming back to this video. There's a certain sentiment about it. I don't know. Very nice.

  • same here :) spread it

  • I dont know much about Rick's personal life, but is that true he was a heavy smoker? If so, the medicine he had to take does that to a person. Love this guy. Just discovered Rick's music in July 09.

  • Lovely Rick....

kinda sorry not to have seen him play...

there are a good few I miss Gene, Townes etc....

    Nice post. x

  • what a beautiful man.......he was very sick

  • It's a pity to see in that state

  • Ginto...I know, breaks my heart. He still sounds good, but you can see the pain. I hear he was clean at the end. I want to remember Rick and Richard during the early Band days...everyone was happy and making some kick a** music. I love you, Rick, RIP!

  • still had a good voice late in life

  • hey mickee why don't you eat this one?

  • he looks like phil margera

  • what a sweet sweet song...no other voice can deliver it so well..played in the perfect key too.

  • umas das melhores musicas ja escritas

  • moving, heartbreaking and healing, no matter how youg or old he is, he is rick

  • Thanks for poting, had no idea Danko retained most of the poignant power of his voice until shortly before his untimely death, I just presumed he sort of pissed his talent away on drugs etc, but this is a beautiful performannce.

  • I wish I could tell Rick how much this song has meant to me. No one could sing it like him. I was in love with someone once who didnt love me back and this song was a salve to my hurting soul during that bleak period in my life. Thank you Rick for singing me through it.

  • Im just getting into his music now. Its really good.

  • Rick may have sung this song with a great melancholic feeling, but the lyrics were written by one Jaime Robert Klegerman, aka Robbie Robertson.

  • it's k3304's crudeness and vulgarity that are depressing.

  • There aren't many of us in our 50's who look like we did in our 30's. Rick packed a lot of life into his 53 years, and packed a lot of love into his music. You could hear it in 1969 in Big Pink and you can still hear it hear hear. A tremendous musician and from all accounts an even better person despite the demons.

  • too good. HEART and soul.

  • I can't believe this is Rick Danko??? FUCKIN HELL!!!!!!!!

  • listen to his guitar work and the emotion behind the voice and you can hear all the elapsed time of his life, the nostalgia, and if you think what he's been thru and what's going into the lyrics after all this time, since he performed at last waltz and all them memories...it's just beautiful in every way. it's a quiet, settled, honest performance

  • very well said, he may not be the young rick, but he is still rick, a beautiful person with a love for music and the people he played it for, how dare people talk bad about him, it is so nice to see your comment, I just happen to think this is even better then from the last waltz, because he put's everything of himself into it and we all know he was always in a lot of pain from a car crash, god is lucky to have rick leading his wonderful band up there! love ya rick, always have always will RIP:)

  • what a fucking looser you are k3304, can you do better, i'd like to see and hear it if you can, you go hate on someone or something else and leave rick the king alone, try the mirrow, that person you see deserves it.......asshole.

  • to all those who make cruel comments about his appearance, all you are pointing to is your own mean-spiritedness and small-mindedness. this is a beautiful vocal performance - all the more touching if he wasn't well when he did it. so if he died young, i am sure he was a better person than those who make cruel comments
