This song is beautifully bleak. "Mephistopheles is just beneath, and is reaching up to grab me" is one of the most chilling lines in Radiohead's catalogue.
Last year i had psychosis and shit due to over anxiety. During that time, mom was on meth and cheating on my dad while he worked days and nights. I always listened to this when i was freaking out. I draw...and i remember i used to always scribble on my desk and paper with thick sharpie. My heart always sinks when i listen to this song, and i always smell sharpie, even if i don't have a pen near me. ...I fucking love radiohead.
As the real life drums give way to a barely distinguishable electronic counterpart, Yorke trails off, his piano gently uncoils, and the song ends with a whimper. The whole thing is an extended metaphor, of course, and, this being Radiohead, it's heavy-handed in its way, but it's also a fitting close to such a human album. In the end, that which we feared came true: In Rainbows represents the sound of Radiohead coming back to earth. Luckily, as it turns out, that's nothing to be afraid of at all.
I listened to this song one night while I was painting, just thinking. I was thinking about how this song is about someone who committed suicide, about how I can relate to those kinds of feelings. Then I was thinking about the part where he mentions Mephistopheles, a demon, and that night I had a horrible nightmare about the devil coming for me. And I'm an atheist, so it's pretty weird. Now every time I hear this song, it has this physical effect on me where I freak out and start crying. idk man
@liligman True that. Their music is like condensed emotion or something, but instead of being toned down it's just as intense as ever. Radiohead will always be legendary.
@BlotBlackInk Videos capture/record different colours by using a combination of the three additive primary colours - red, blue and green. Mixtures of these are then used to represent different colours on the spectrum. So, when he sings 'i have it all here in red, blue, green' he's just referring to having recorded it on video.
@BlotBlackInk google 'rgb'. screens and monitors usually produce colour by combining very small red, blue and green lights and varying their intensity. these lights are visible, if you look at a monitor close enough.
When I'm at, the pearly gates, this will be on my videotape,(2x) Mephistopheles is just beneath, and hes reaching out,to grab me This is one for the good days, and i have it all here, in red,blue,green(2x) u are my center, when i spin away, out of control on videotape, on videotape, on videotape. This is my way of saying goodbye, cause i cant do it face to face I'm talking to u before No matter what happens now, u shouldn't be afraid because today has been the most perfect day ill ever see
I've probably listened to this song over fifty times by now, not including listening to the album as a whole. And I JUST NOW noticed the out of time hi hat at 3:06 that sounds so awesome. I feel stupid and amazed.
I listen to this song on repeat and one time I'll find myself listening to just the snare, another just the lyrics, another just the piano... it's unreal
gonna be honest/. i have yet to play this song all the way through. It's WAYY too repetative. i love the lyrics but i cant stand more than about 2 minutes of it
I don't know if this is about suicide, but it is definitely about Thom leaving someone who he cares for. "And I have it all here/ In red, blue, green" tells me that he's videotaped some happy memories with whoever it is that he's cherishing. I also got a sense that he's made this one last videotape of himself as his "way of saying good-bye/ Because I can't do it face to face." He'll leave the videotape for his loved one(s) to find, but by the time they do, he'll be gone.
@freetheshrooms the song is about his son, Noah, and probably his wife. He knows he'll never be able to say goodbye to them when his time comes (not by suicide) because he loves them so much; instead he leaves this song to remind them of how happy they made him, using his memories in the videotape as an example. If you think about it the "Don't be afraid" line makes a lot more sense in the context of leaving his son which, as with all fathers, he one day will have to
@GaldonEyeStudios That's when you know the true power of music, it touches our emotions, thoughts, and our hearts. It literally changes what we're feeling. Not all music has that power. Radiohead certainly has achieved this, though. Love every moment of it.
@GaldonEyeStudios The reason Radiohead is so great. Radiohead's music is composed of so many combined emotions. Just like the human mind. At one point in life they feel the happiest they have ever been. Then, at another point in life they feel as though they would never be happy again.
This song is a detress message to all the sadness in the world! It's like a tsunami of feelings that's neverending! I love this song so much that no words can can place the state of mind i'm...
the memories of my mind. the puzzle crumbles. the glass pieces shatter, never to be put back together again. the only thing i have left is the memories of my mind. the videotape that i can play back...remembering the happiest days of my life. but so frail...never thought the end of a smile would come so soon. but as the pieces fall, new ones remain in the mess....hopefully these pieces will begin to draw out the picture that i need in my life. hopefully this new picture wont crumble....hopefully
@jjmonman no i understand, lol. plenty songs, or anything for that matter, can touch someone very deeplt to their core, and in a way speak to them on exactly how they're feeling or what they're thinking. i just thought it was a tad overdone lol. granted, thats just seeing things from my point of view, maybe it was just a simple explanation in your eyes. at least for me, i like the song to speak for itself, not others, lol.
If you mean best endings rather than best songs at the end, well either way I would not have Motion picture soundtrack at the top. Motion picture soundtrack sounds to me as a solemn reminder of Radiohead before Kid A. I would do as follows, and I am listing by best songs that also happen to be at the end of the album:
this song is just beautiful... I don't know what else to say, and I 'm only typing this to say to every one who is sad, angry or unhappy in some other way to know you're not alone and you don't have to feel ashamed or anything. and if you think you need to, you can write me and I will try to sooth you.
I'm only 3 years old and I love Radiohead.... Jeez can we stop bragging about how we're really deep? Good for you, you're exposed to this song... no one cares if you're 14 or 44.
today is my birthday and its just been horrible. but this song makes me happy every single time. thank you radiohead, for all that you've done. you made my birthday better and that's all i could ask for.
@kadablanba why dont you like wolf at the door? it's one of my favorites and one of the highlights of the underrated hail to the thief. but other than that, pretty much agreed.
i've been listening to radiohead for years, but it's really starting to hit me how amazing they really are. i recently took the time to listen to all their sounds and wow, just wow

So beautiful. Great song out of this band. But all their songs are amazing. People in america don't appreciate them as much as they should. They don't listen to the l
wow... i wonder if anyone noticed the symbolism? when there is that tapping sound, it reminded me of that omen where they say if you hear tapping on wood (of the death watch beetle) it means that someone is going to die...
6. Pearly (Airbag/How Am I driving?) that's an EP I belive:)
7. Sail to the moon (Hail to the thief)
8. How to dissapear completly (Kid A) but I have to say there's a lot more. Hard choice. I love live version of Talk show host, Let down, All I need, Electioneering, Climbing up the walls, You, Thinking about you, Reckoner etc
A Wolf At The Door is probably Radiohead's worst song from 1995 onward. And The Tourist is probably the most intense ending track ever on an album. Something I like from your list though is that you didn't put Blow Out in a low position, it's an underrated track.
8 month relationship.. Screwed things up really bad.. 4 months after break up I find myself desolated, and alone.. I now realize what I lost, and how much I loved her.. I need her.. Now she's with someone else, and me being the idiot I am, messaged her.. I told her how much I missed her (while listening to this song) and her response to this message is talk about how happy she is, how she doesn't care anymore, and tells me to "Fuck off, Idiot" I want to end my life, play this song on my funeral.
been there dude...youre not an idiot...you just made a mistake...we all have...you will eventually get over it and move on....please dont do anything stupid. fall in love with yourself again and emphasise the positives in your life and dont judge yourself by other peoples happiness...it just doesnt work that way...were all human and we all sometimes struggle to make sense of this world and our lives. its a crazy world but it is better for you being in it. keep the faith! x
@iD3ATHxR3V0LUTiiONxX DONT BE DOWN MAN YOU CAN DO BETTER, HARD TO BELIEVE I BEEN IN THE SAME SPOT BEFORE, PICK YOURSELF UP AND USE HER WORDS TO MAKE YOU STRONGER. HER TELLING YOU TO FUCK OFF ISNT THE SIGN OF A GOOD PARTNER MAN CHEER UP MAN :)
@iD3ATHxR3V0LUTiiONxX Been there recently mate. It may seem like the most horrible thing right now but after time it will be better. I know its hard to believe right now but there are so many better people out there. Keep listening to great music, music will understand you more than any girl just keep telling yourself that.
Feel in love with this song while falling in love with a girl, and it all happened so fast. Now this song reminds me of her, while we so far apart. All happened on the 7th - April - 2011. =\

wow... i wonder if anyone noticed the symbolism? when there is that tapping sound, it reminded me of that omen where they say if you hear tapping on wood (of the death watch beetle) it means that someone is going to die...
awesome song!

Seeing them play this live... It blew me away how they flip one of their most somber tunes into a full on jam at the end.

@WillowwValentine Are you out of your mind?!?!

I told her how much I missed her (while listening to this song) and her response to this message is talk about how happy she is, how she doesn't care anymore, and tells me to "Fuck off, Idiot" I want to end my life, play this song on my funeral.

been there dude...youre not an idiot...you just made a mistake...we all have...you will eventually get over it and move on....please dont do anything stupid. fall in love with yourself again and emphasise the positives in your life and dont judge yourself by other peoples happiness...it just doesnt work that way...were all human and we all sometimes struggle to make sense of this world and our lives. its a crazy world but it is better for you being in it. keep the faith! x

what other songs are there in this world, by any band, that are like this?
dman13007 10 months ago
I am very young.
I've known this song for years, and i can never get tired of it.
My parents have exposed me to Radiohead ever since i was born, and this song is so important to me.
This song hits me the hardest,
makes me get goosebumps,
sends chills down my spine.
this song spills my emotions into one big pool of calm devotion.
It just makes me want to dissolve into my seat,
makes me want to melt.
Am i the only one that feels this way?
