I was in the Marines, Army and of course am now a Vet. I was injured during service in the Gulf War and am 40% disabled thus can use the VA medical system. I can tell you a little bit about socialized healthcare and what I, like most others that have it, will tell you is that most of the time it sucks. Even when on active duty getting to see a doctor was a major pain unless the injury or sickness was an emergency and clearly observable. The VA uses medical college kids more than they do doctors.

There's many types of redistributing wealth. The largest and most profound is the inflation tax. It redistributes it up to the first borrowers who get to use the money at its full value until it eventually fully inflated which tends to me mean much of the poor and middle class get stuck with weaker dollars. That includes any savings you may have...it is "invisibly" stolen from you.

Why "opt out" of a single payer system? Unless you believe that you're immortal/immune to all diseases, there would be no reason for that. Single payer is NOT socialized medicine, meaning doctors would still be privately employed, but all medical bills would be covered by the gov't. In such a situation, giant pharmaceutical conglomerates would not be allowed to dictate the absurd prices they currently do AND everyone would have direct access ALL of the time. Why wouldn't you want that?
That doesn't sound economically viable. When the government forces price controls, that always results in lack of supply, which increases demand, which increases the lack of supply even more. They'd have to cut Research and Development, so it would also slow the development of new medicines. Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it.

I was in the Marines, Army and of course am now a Vet. I was injured during service in the Gulf War and am 40% disabled thus can use the VA medical system. I can tell you a little bit about socialized healthcare and what I, like most others that have it, will tell you is that most of the time it sucks. Even when on active duty getting to see a doctor was a major pain unless the injury or sickness was an emergency and clearly observable. The VA uses medical college kids more than they do doctors.

Americans of all income levels are being hosed by the current system.

There's many types of redistributing wealth. The largest and most profound is the inflation tax. It redistributes it up to the first borrowers who get to use the money at its full value until it eventually fully inflated which tends to me mean much of the poor and middle class get stuck with weaker dollars. That includes any savings you may have...it is "invisibly" stolen from you.
I don't think the redistributing health thing makes much sense in comparison.

Why "opt out" of a single payer system? Unless you believe that you're immortal/immune to all diseases, there would be no reason for that. Single payer is NOT socialized medicine, meaning doctors would still be privately employed, but all medical bills would be covered by the gov't. In such a situation, giant pharmaceutical conglomerates would not be allowed to dictate the absurd prices they currently do AND everyone would have direct access ALL of the time. Why wouldn't you want that?

That would mean something if we were still on the gold standard... but we're not, we carry fiat money. Prices of gold are based on the markets, and while regulated, they are not "controlled" by the government, and reflect everything from consumers, the product, availability, service, and industry.
Gold bonds are great market for investing.... 90s saw dips close to $300. Should have gotten in on AMEX while it bottomed around $9.50, but that's another subject.

He was pointing out how quoting gold values was somewhat irrelevant in this case because of the difference in how currency worked back then and now.
It's an obvious problem in economics: how do you measure the value of money over time when that value isn't dependent on something concrete (like gold)? There are number of factors to consider there, not just raw numbers.
It's also an interesting mathematical problem if you're into that sort of thing.

True value of gold take all fiat currency divide by physical gold that exists = True Value.
You run into problems with fiat when the government counterfeits it into oblivion. USA = 1923 Germany exactly.

I would point out that division by zero isn't zero, it's actually undefined. Which means it could be worth 0, infinity, any number within that range or all at the same time or even none at all. Everything breaks down at division by zero.
re: formulas: IDK if you were being facetious but no, that's not correct. In economics things don't have an intrinsic value. Gold's worth depends entirely on market forces. but if you have figured this out you should publish. there's a Nobel waiting for you.

Exactly gold should never go up in value and is pegged at $20. Its will never go to 0 value but paper will. Gold as money just ensures the government won't destroy the paper money supply like they just did.

You'll learn a lot more than I could explain in 500 characters or less and you might understand the point I'm making.

In Zimbabwe you couldn't do a 1oz gold transaction because there wasn't enough paper to do the transaction.
(Divide by 0, the paper had no value but gold does)

to a certain extend you're right. The paper is worth only what people think it's worth. but that's the nature of economy, isn't it? everything's value is transient.
Think about it: what's so special about Gold? Why would it be any different than paper money? Its value is equally fluid.
But if you want to protect your savings and you think paper is worthless then go ahead and buy gold or oil. though I'd wait until the prices come down.
