The state came under heavy pressure to lower the rates in the 1990s because it truly was out of control during the crack epidemic. Now, with the 3 strikes laws these gangbangers don't have a chance to grow into serious gangsters. 3 felonies and you get life with no parole. It's sad but it works and New Zealand recently passed a similar law(New Zealand has more gangs per capita than any other country on earth).

In the 50s-60s that meant "you don't come to my block unless you want to get a stick to the face". The state came under heavy pressure to lower the rates in the 1990s because it truly was out of control during the crack epidemic. Now, with the 3 strikes laws these gangbangers don't have a chance to grow into serious gangsters. 3 felonies and you get life with no parole. It's sad but it works and New Zealand recently passed a similar law(New Zealand has more gangs per capita than any other country on earth).

No other states have a 3 strikes law as harsh as California(and a lot don't have a 3 strikes law period). The murder rate is something like 300 or less a year. Which is a lot compared to European standards, but it's still really low for a place that only 20 years ago had the highest murder rate in America.
