This interview is a good 3 years before she ever stopped the show in "Gypsy." She's getting ready for a performance of Sweeney Todd, which was in 2005, so it's about 3 years before she stopped the show in Gypsy. People really do call her a bitch because of her performance in Evita. She played the role so well that people thought she was actually like that.

LuPone BELONGS on the stage. She has sometimes sustained her career with film and TV roles. No harm and no foul. Acting for a living is tough. AND if one can earn a generous salary from movies, why the hell not? But LuPone -- short, striking and sexy, with a powerful (though less-than-beautiful) voice -- remains a woman of the theater. One needn't admire her work unreservedly (I don't) to discern this simple fact.
