Holding the hit in longer usually makes you cough as well (which makes you inhale and exhale rapidly = small hyperventilation) which turns your eyes really red, which could psychologically make you feel more stoned, but you're not (eyes feel heavy when engorged with blood) and yes, lack of o2 is bad
