What a pity - in Germany this clip looks like an old film originating from the silent movie age. WMG did not authorized the music and so the clip is in germany soundless.
amazing sailing .... tuned on their motion they didn't balance the back and as flydutch said they were constantly sailing the bow almost underwater so then the wind pushed raising up the back.
no it aint a design flaw. these boats are sailed by 6-7 people. at 80kg each, 480-560kg. if u look at how tall that rig is, and how it has a flat top main, that is a shit load of sailarea. add that to the fact that they are ultra light, they are catamarans and that they are called "EXTREME 40's" and u mayb start to realise that it aint a design flaw, its just such an extreme boat that and slight misjudgement could have big implications. its the same with the modern day americas cup boats.
I agree with earlier post that there seems to be a design flaw if they pitchpole so easily in flat water. A section early in the clip shows one at speed with the bow constantly low and the back constantly high.
I guess the proof is in how long this series survived? Extreme 40s still around?
To increase sail are they would add a gennaker, but in really strong winds you dont want to increase the sail are beacause it would be way easier to capsize
that looks amazing! iv only ever sailed smaller boats like wayfarers and merlins. how easy is it for the larger ones like the ones on this vides to capsize?
The teams are training with modified Extreme 40's (bigger sails and mast) but they are building own cats for the Cup. The AC will not see any Volvo Extreme 40.
Rumours say Oracle has 3 diferent cats that would fit different conditions, as only Alinghi knows where the Cup will be sailed.
That is NOT a design fault by any means, one of the hazards of sailing a catamaran is burying a hull and pitch poling. There are a couple ways to prevent it from happening, sheeting out, pushing toward the wind, etc. But when you are racing a catamaran, you push it to its limits, sometimes you find the edge of what the boat can do by crossing it, just part of the sport. It's much easier to prevent in recreational sailing, but racing is a whole different beast.
Would a Monohull Kanting keel 40ft Yacht with same sail area be competitive?

Thats no design flaw, cats are much more powerful with the weight far forward, thats just the fastest way of sailing them in many conditions.

They key is to have a barely manageable amount of sail w/o pushing it too far.
But when you push the edge of the envelope, sometimes you get a paper cut.
