THE BEAU BRUMMELS were the first american band to respond to the british invasion, and an original and creative response it was.Check out their two wonderful late 60"s albums TRIANGLE and BRADLEY'S BARN.
One of my favorite groups and songs from the 60's. Thank you for posting. Please see my Tribute to Sal Valentino and The Beau Brummels. Thankyou.....JC
I liked this stuff when I was in, I think, 5th grade. Thought they were British (the name, for one, the sound for another). CA band. A couple hits. good memories.
i see he is singing live, but do you think they are playing to a pre recorded track? they have no cords, amps...the drums arent really being heard?...any one technical out there, lets hear from you.
@olhobbler, Yes, they're all singing live to their pre-recorded track (boom mics were over their heads just out of camera range). This was quite common on Shindig as well as a lot of other 60's shows.
I LOVE THIS BAND. I LOVE THE LEAD SINGERS VOICE.. ITS SO BEAUTIFULLY DARK AND HAUNTING.. THEIR SOUND IS DARK AND HAUNTING. I ALWAYS THOUGHT THEY WERE BRITISH... FROM THE INVASION DAYS.. AND WHEN I FOUND OUT THEY WERE AMERICAN..I WAS SHOCKED..THEY REALLY FOOLED ME... GREAT BAND AND WHETHER THEY ARE BRITISH OR AMERICAN.. IT MATTERS NOT GREAT MUSIC IS GREAT MUSIC.. NO MATTER WHAT COUNTRY THEY ARE FROM. /. I THINK THEY ROCK. / THEY JUST HAVE THEIR OWN SOUND.. DARK/HAUNTING MELODIES.
I loved the Beau Brummels. I remember Shindig and the great bands on that show. No fancy electronic equipment to make them sound better, just plain good talent on stage and on TV.
Such good music! I grew up listening to wonderful stuff like this. My dad used to deliver papers and we'd listen to good '50s and '60s music along the way; as a result, I've always called "oldies" "Paper Route Music." I can't help but feel good listening to it!
@farone100, I agree with you. It just doesn't make sense to me. I've tried to be open minded and listened to a few rap songs. All I heard was obscenities!!! What a shame.
At least the screaming bimbos quit screaming once the song started, unlike one of the Kinks videos on youtube that is almost unlistenable due to screaming.
One of my favorite 60's songs...timeless in the sense that it resonates with anyone that has to leave someone they loved either by design or by circumstance.
I agree and modern "musicians" need to go back to polishing their craft, perfecting their music first and stop throwing out junk chasing money first. There are too many out there who can barely even play and yet they are on Billboard.
I wish the songs of the Beau Brummels would quick being removed. This song would have four or five hundred thousand hits by now. It is only going to help the band and record company in the long run by the exposure.
This is music.... It's so sad seeing so many musicians, if you want to call them that, over polishing all of the music they make. It needs to go back to basics, where it's just the instruments and a mic.
@bayingofhounds I agree and modern "musicians" need to go back to polishing their craft, perfecting their music first and stop throwing out junk chasing money first. There are too many out there who can barely even play and yet they are on Billboard.
@bobyoung53, Eko's are cool (I have a 60's Eko bass that I absolutely love) but these guitars were correctly identified as the Vox Clubman and the Vox Meteor. If you check out Google Images you'll see both of 'em there!
TV in the '60s very rarely incorporated live audio for music segments, and the sound stages weren't equipped for live audio mixing. Artists always lip-synced to prerecorded tracks. You'll notice if you compare, the taped TV segments are always identical to the records, with the addition of "canned", -- and sometimes live recorded -- applause and screaming.
I love this song, it's from my High School days, reminds me of a lover. Song is etched in my mind forever. Yes, great guitar work, w/unique sounds ! Notice guitars, not plugged in ! There were no cordless guitars back then, but is he really singing, I think so.
@verdict4me Well there isn't any fuzz but it's flatwound strings, spring reverb, `sounds like tremolo during the chords in the solo, perhaps someone is switching it on & off out of the shot & some of it is the acoustics of the room. Really cool for sure. I may have to try a set of flatwounds sometime.
For me - this song defines a quintessential moment in my childhood and the nostalgia embedded therein brings me back to a much simpler place in time; a memory of waking up in the middle of the night,. There was a radio hidden under my pillow softly playing. First they played "Red Rubber Ball" by "the Circle" Then this song, "Just a Little" by the Beau Brummels and followed it up with an "oldie" by Peggy Lee, "Is that all there is". For some reason, I've never forgotten that moment.
To bad there manager was incompatent. I feel they were far more talented than alot of english groups. Anybody remember the beau brummelstones. There manager must have been smoking crack!
anyone remember "Stoneground" ? it's the band Sal valentino formed after the Beau Brummels. approx. 8 hairy hippies who toured the world and were in a movie
learned this from a teacher (acoustic Guitar version). Gentle Wandering Ways is another good one. glad to see this video. A close up of the singer reminds me of Jim Morison. Turn Around from Bradley's Barn is another great Beau Brummels song.
This and "Laugh Laugh" were far and away two of the top 60's tunes including the Beatles, Stones, and everyone else. I can't understand why they weren't Number 1's for weeks as I never heard anything better.
How I miss those Jr High days when we had music like this.

@MrPrimergray Right, but the bands would cut a quick live two track in a studio for the TV show, they wouldn't always be doing it to the record.
